Theme Dreams

August 15th, 2007 @ 5:42 pm by Mrs. Petunia

Words that came to mind when I started to think of a vision for our wedding were romantic, classic and elegant.

As such, I had a hard time imagining planning our celebration around a theme — something about a theme just seemed to go against those other words. In reality, this seemed only true because 1. I apparently only have limited vision and 2. What little vision I do have seems to be impaired by my DIY inability and limited budget.

In a perfect world, had I a rich pocket and were I Martha Stewart (or, if I simply could just cut in a straight line and know how to use things like glue guns), I think it would be nice to have the wedding reflect an all out theme of board games since after all, we’re punch game crazy. (The board game theme in particular is tricky — how does one make what are mostly children’s games “classic” and “elegant”?).

I’d ask some fancy paperie to custom make me letter-pressed invitations with nods to Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit and Clue.

And oh if from these I were clever enough to make escort and table cards, centerpieces, favors, we could have a vintage feel, too!

It’s funny that you posted this. I’m currently trying to make “trivial pursuit” cards to put on all the tables. My fiance and I are big game players ourselves…and love random facts.

We thought this would be a fun ice breaker if we made some couple themed ones for the reception.

Lori, would also be fun if some of the questions had to do with the region, esp if there are a lot of out-of-town guests.

I’m not big on themes, but you could certainly incorporate elements and details that would still be elegant with that motif. Games are fun - and more importantly, you said they reflect you and your FI’s personalities.

I had a friend who had their invitations designed to spell out their names and the date, etc. in a scrabble block letter motif. It was simply colored and fantastic. One of my favorite invites I’ve ever received. And that is something that you can sprinkle throughout.

I LOVE your theme. And the photos you’ve posted are inspiring … Scrabble invites, like annieoakley describes. Or, using it as your monogram? Maybe an STD with Clue? Bingo card escort cards: use bingo cards with a mark on the table “name” as the table number, and for the escort cards, glue the little bingo markers to it (I’d love to sit at table B-25 or something like that). I know another wb reader mentioned something about sitting at St. James’ Place, looking longingly at the Park Place table, so perhaps Bingo numbers would be less … hierarchical? (Or, alternatively, you could use the old Clue style envelope for escort cards, with a color (or not) copy of a Clue weapon/person/place? (You’re sitting at the Prof. Plum table!)

For the longest time, I’ve been planning on including Yahtzee cards and dice in OOT packages.

Maybe use dice or dominos to “spell out” your wedding date on an std?

Man, *I* want to use games now! It would work … except FI doesn’t play games with me. :( Can I come and play? :)

Mr. Peony and I both love boardgames so I was thinking of something similar too. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

please win the lotto and do this… It reminds me of an amazing wedding I saw in Martha Stewart Weddings (of course) where the bride and groom were teachers I think, and they seriously took the decor to a vintage amazing school-er-y level that I couldn’t have dreamed up. The invitations alone were adorable, like yours WILL be :)
