A Big Step…

August 16th, 2007 @ 10:24 am by Mrs. Peppermint

Mr. Peppermint and I made our first purchase for our apartment together. This may not seem like a “big step,” but it was an instance when we had to come to agreement on this new addition to our apartment. It’s especially difficult for me (not just because I’m a control freak!), but also because he’ll be moving into my apartment. Granted, he helped me pick it out two years ago, but I’ve been in charge of all decorating decisions…until now.Are you ready guys…?

Drum roll please….

Meet: Our new lamp!

A Big Step... : wedding newlywed palm springs Ourlam

We haven’t exactly figured out where to put it (hence Mr. Peppermint’s puzzled expression!), but we’re starting a new chapter in our life… :-)

Have you given in to your (future) hubby’s design desires? What was your first “big step”?

Oh…my! That’s an interesting lamp. Looks very peaceful. :)

My fiance also moved into my home that I’d had for 2 years already before he and I met. We’ve been updating the decor together over the past year, and while he initially said he wasn’t such a fan of dark wood (like I am), he’s either come around or he’s lying to make me happy, because pretty much all of our new purchases have been in my personal taste. (I’ve been told by my sister and friends that I have a good decorating style though, so maybe that helps.)

He didn’t have much to bring with him, though. Just some photos that we’ve put up (he was a photog major in college), and that sort of thing. It all works itself out over time, it seems.

Haha. The first thing my fiance bought for our apartment: “Grandpa’s Cough Syrup.”

He says that everyone’s always curious about what’s inside the medicine cabinet, so he bought a bottle of whiskey and labeled it “Grandpa’s cough syrup” as a joke for anyone who’s that nosy.

I burst out laughing (he didn’t tell me) when I found it in our medicine cabinet.

Fun lamp! I bought our house 8 months ago, but have tried to include him on the major decisions like paint colors and art. We did however just bring over his old Stein collection which now resides on top of our kitchen cabinets :-) I don’t mind because what else was I gonna put up there?

He wants me to get rid of my papasan chair. Men seem to universally hate them…I don’t get it. They’re so comfortable!

Our First BIG STEP was me rearranging and creating external closet space that fit in with the decor of the house. Fiance is moving into my adorable house (that has little to no storage space)… I’m scared because the men of now seem to have a ton of clothes and shoes.

We moved in together (to a new apartment) about 6 months before our wedding. A year later we bought our house. He had been living on his own for far longer than me so he had more “stuff” than I had. He brought with him a healthy collection of sailing/boating stuff. Pictures of boats and harbors, half hulls, depth charts, paddles - yup, we’ve got it all!

I don’t mind for the most part - it fits our seaside cottage style - but we’ve agreed to lay off the boating paraphenalia purchases for a few years - we’ve got enough already! :)

Mr. GB was a packrat, I’m a minimalist. So our first big move together wasn’t a purchase, but an expulsion of crap. Honestly, we’ve found a good middle ground since the house purchase. We keep all the tech toys out of sight in nice vintage storage and so everyone thinks we have a cute house, but really it’s just to store a million video game systems. :)

I like the lamp!

My fiance and I have been living together for 2 1/2 years already so we’ve made a number of joint purchases, but the furniture was already his when I moved in so our place kind of looks like a bachelor pad. Haha. While we continue to rent, we’re just leaving the decor as is because we don’t want to dump a bunch of money into a rental. But we have an agreement for when we buy a place:

He gets full decorative control over the den/TV room. It will be comfy and most likely remain very bachelor-pad “chic.” I do not care, because I get full decorative control over the ENTIRE rest of the house. And all I *really* wanted was a gorgeous kitchen so I fully lucked out on that deal.

squee! I love it!

When I was a teenager, my mom and I always used the same department store entrance at a particular mall, and it passed the lighting section. We both had a thing for a silly cranberry glass hurricane style lamp that looked like it belonged in a gypsy tea room or something. She always said when I got my first place, she’d get it for me, and when I finally did, she made good on the promise.

We bought matching dressers when we moved in together, a year before he proposed. That felt like a HUGE step! I mean, what if we broke up? Who would get the dressers? If we each kept one, they wouldn’t match anything else!

That was 2 years ago. And I’m glad we did it. Recent purchases include the Plasma tv, dining table set and our new CHINA cabinet! (which he totally loves!)

Cute lamp - I want to rub his tubby little belly!

Blending two different homes (with two different styles) has been challenging. We both have a lot of generational antiques that we want to hold on to. I *hate* his bachelor leather sofa, love seat and big chair which are navy/steel blue. Yuck. He also has seafoam green carpeting in the entire first floor from the previous owner. The carpet is heinous but is in great shape so for now it stays.

Our first big purchase will be a few months after the wedding: a 50″ flat screen tv and media unit (that looks like piece of furniture, not another bachelor-y looking addition). Can’t wait!
