Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. cubangirl’s friend is getting proposed to in Chicago this month and her boyfriend would like ideas: romantic restaurants/jazz clubs/places to take a walk.  Any Chicago bees with suggestions?
  2. ~v~ and her fiance are giving money to a charity in honor of their guests (and a candy buffet in lieu of favors).  Are there any guidelines about what an appropriate donation would be?

Re: Chicago — Lots of romantic spots! I was proposed to at The Drake, which has live music nightly in the bar. Restaurant there is also good, and it’s classic chicago. Anywhere along the downtown lakefront is also beautiful. Millennium Park has fantastic skyline views and wonderful sculptures. What about top of the John Handcock building? Or charter a boat on Lake Mich, or on River cruise? Possibilities are endless…

We want to give a flat amount of $500. It depends on your budget, and if you have other charities that you give to throughout the year.

v - you mean the type of charity or the dollar amount?

My FI and I decided not to give favors, but instead give a donation to Heifer International. We had planned for small favors into our wedding budget, so we will give the amount we had alloted for favors as our donation.

*The BP bridge in Millennium Park (or under/near The Bean, also in MP)
*Lincoln Park Zoo
*Rose Angeli’s is a very romantic restaurant (Italian) on the north side.
*If she’s a sports fan, at a Cubs or Sox game.
*If she likes the Wizard of Oz, try Oz Park (also north side.
*Romantic restaurant (but fairly close quarters with your other patrons - not very private) — La Creperie on N. Clark Avenue.

Feel free to email me with more specific Chicago questions: aliya dot pitts at gmail dot com.

Chicago: I was proposed to during a trip to Chicago. FI surprised me with a stay at an adorable Bed and Breakfast near downtown (I thought we were staying with friends), called the Flemish House. Its a renovated 1890s Row House. Just another idea.

~v~ your guests don’t have to know the actual amount, so give according to your means and your inclination.

How do you let your guests know where you are registered? I’ve read that its bad form to include the information with your invitations, but why do stores provide those inserts for invites then? Thank you

Cliche but a great view- Top of the Hancock building with champagne; the fountain in Grant Park

Better idea- their favorite restaurant- call the owner first and have them set up a romantic table for two

Other options - the symphony (before or after), Ravinia, the lakefront (preferably during a picnic), have the cake girls make a tiny wedding cake and use it during the proposal, or at the W lakeshore (an AMAZING hotel!)

i have a question for the hive. my FI and i are about ready to go and get our marriage license. i’m looking at the online application (to hopefully speed things up, as i am told), but find something called public vs. confidential wedding license.

does anybody knows what all this means? and why should i chose one over the other?

thanx!

I have a question for the hive. Has anyone converted their wedding dress into a cocktail dress after the big day? If so, do you have any tips?

Munchiee - I am in California, so I hope this is helpful. We did a confidential marriage license. For us, this meant that we filled out the license app with a notary public and had him stamp and notarize it. This saved us from having to go to the city office and do it in person.

i also need a suggestion! what length veil would you wear with this dress:

i like the look of longer veils (floor/chapel length) and am thinking of something really sheer (54″ width), but would a shorter one look better with the styling of the waist?

@munchiee:

A confidential marriage license has many benefits:

* no witnesses necessary
* provided on the spot
* the license can be brought to you
* no spam
* no telemarketers
* no junkmail
* no media
* no press
* nobody needs to know unless you want them to know.

And at least here in LA, they cost the same as a public license! get one, you’ll be happy when you don’t have to deal with all the junk mail, and possible scammers or identity thieves.
