Long After The Shutter Snaps

August 16th, 2007 @ 3:11 pm by Mrs. Lemon

There is absolutely no subsitute for capturing the perfect moments on film with the correct lighting and at the perfect angle, but there’s no shame in saying that the post-production work on a photo can make something normal become absolutely amazing. Instead of laboring in the darkroom over noxious chemicals (although, who’s with me in adoring the peace and strange smells of the dark room for hours on end?), photographers today can simply click an action pack in Photoshop and transform images instantly. In fact, some photog’s are selling their action packs to help ease the process for others.

So what does it mean if your photographer is gifted in post-production? Well… take these “before and after” examples from Southern California photographer Becker to see what photoshop art can do:

There’s a fine balance between good/bad Photoshop, but it definitely can add a distinctive touch to your wedding photos. Luckily there are a lot of photographers who are using it to their advantage and producing amazing images.

Did you see a huge difference in your photos between the proofs and the end products?

that is stunning.
thank you for that post, i have the feeling that because my uncle will be our photographer (he is a photographer, but the photos will be digital to a CD) i will be doing most of the editing.

this is such an inspiring post. i hope i can turn some ‘ok’ pics into some great ones, too! :)

we saved a ton on NOT having this done. However, we are being given all of the high resolution pics on cd. I’ll just put my handy little photoshop skills to work :-)

We haven’t had our pictures yet, clearly, and I’m not an expert on photography by any means, but one of the reasons we went with a photographer who shoots in RAW and not JPEG was for the reasons you blogged about.

Apparently, it allows more room for post-production and the like!

i am a pre production artist so i’ll get all the raw images and then get to play. i definitely think that Photoshop can look cheesy (examples 1, 2 and 3 in my opinion) but can also be used to get rid of blemishes and enhance lighting (examples 4 & 5). I can honestly say i’m looking forward to this bit of work!

As a photographer, I just want to put out a reminder that there is a LOT of time and effort spent in post-processing. Although one-click actions can be terrific helps, we still do spend quite a bit more energy into it than just using one quick tool. After taking using one’s talents and knowledge to take the original shot, this is also where the art, skills and education of the photographer come into play - let’s not minimize that.

yeah i also think it can be good and bad…when used too much it has a very overdone overprocessed look that I think will eventually “date” the photos as new technology comes along. I also want the colors and images to be true to the day and how things really looked. I don’t want my flowers too look better in the pictures then they did the day of (others may want that). As long as it falls within those perameters I think it’s a useful tool.

i think that the pictures look great. I liked the look of the after sky in the first picture…. I like all of the after pictures actually they didnt look too over done to me.

For several of those I like the original image much better than the after image…..
