Videographer Regret…

August 16th, 2007 @ 12:13 pm by Mrs. Onion

Ok, ok, yes, I’m getting married in 23 days, so WHY am I now thinking about a videographer? Because I’m nuts, that’s why.

I’ve never really wanted (nor did I think we could afford) a videographer in addition to our still photographer. BUT, that hasn’t stopped me from checking out (ok, well stalking really) this website: www.wilsonfontaine.com. This is the only videographer whose work I’ve come across that stopped me in my tracks. His vignette style is just stunning — I don’t know if he shoots with a 8mm camera or if it’s digital post processes, but either way it’s stunning, tasteful and amazing to watch. Click on the “Gallery” on his website and you can see for yourself.

I never even sent him an inquiry because I was afraid I’d want to come up with the money. But today I was thinking “what if he’s not booked on our date — [yeah right] and wants to take us on at a discount?!” So I sent him a last minute email just so I don’t kick myself later.

If you’re wedding is say MONTHS from now instead of weeks, check out the website and enjoy!

Oh, I feel you Miss Onion.

We don’t have the money in our budget for a videographer and I didn’t think I wanted one anyway, but each day I think more that I do…

Sigh.

I hope he quotes you an AMAZING price!

Hi, Miss Onion. Our videographer is actually Wes Jones (www.filmjones.com) who worked with Wilson Fontaine in his beginning years. He also incorporates Super 8 Film into his videos and my fiance and I adore him.

If I remember correctly though, I think I distinctly remember Wes referring to Wilson Fontaine as “she.”

Why can I not find someone like this in Saint Louis?!

We never had it in our budget to hire a professional videographer but I did want the ceremony and reception documented somehow so I just hired a film student off of craigslist to shoot our wedding for $30/hr. This is obviously no frills and no editing - just raw footage but I’m sure it’ll be better than the shakey camera shots my uncle would have captured. We can edit it ourselves on computer if we feel like it later.

I had the same feeling of regret 4 months before our wedding and desperately sought out a videographer whose style we liked and wasn’t booked on my date…it was difficult, but not impossible. It is the one thing that definitely put us over budget, but now I feel relieved knowing that I’ll at least have the day documented on video, not just photos. So if you can swing it, I say go for it!

I had the same issue…we ended up having room in our budget at the very last minute (due to less guests coming than expected). We booked our videographer a week before the wedding!!

Hi Ella — Another knottie suggested Wes Jones as well so I sent him an email too just in case. Opps — I didn’t realize Wilson was a woman. Thanks for catching my error!

I’ll keep you all posted when I head back from them. Any other suggestions? Any Burlington, VT area brides reading?? Anyone in the VT/NH/Upstate NY area you could recommend?

Thanks!

Honestly, we went back and forth on videography, and finally decided to put the funds toward a better photographer. Why? We just don’t want the constant intrusion of having everything videotaped — I don’t want to be spending time with my bridal party and wondering “is this a good angle for the camera?!”

I think that a videographer is can sometimes be less intrusive than a photographer. If you choose carefully and do your homework I think that you should be able to find someone that won’t interfere with your wedding day. We have a great podcast with some of the top wedding videographers in the country on our website http://www.weddingpodcastnetwork.com listen to the show and you might be able to find someone that will capture the day discretely and give you a wonderful keepsake from the wedding.

Happy planning.

We also deliberated and decided against it ultimately. It’s our memories that connect our photos into our own movie. A few guests videotaped, so there’s that if we ever want it. Also went with great photography instead, budgetwise.

We didn’t care to hire a videographer either until 2 weeks before the wedding! Luckily, an awesome videographer was able to make it work for us. It’s the best last minute splurge we made! Although I value photography more, videography captures so much that photography cannot. Seeing my family and friends reactions and seeing us exchange vows were priceless. They day went by so fast and there is just so much you miss.
