About Mrs. Petunia

We’re Passing Go!

August 16th, 2007 @ 5:14 pm by Mrs. Petunia

For some time now, we have been toying, pun intended, with the idea of somehow incorporating our love of games into our wedding. BUT: I had no real vision for how we could carry out our desire in a classy way.

Then, I don’t know how the ideas started rolling in, but we decided we just had to follow our theme dreams and go with it! (It was probably my idea for Mr. Petunia’s gift that did it). So, we’ve given ourselves the Go! to include some elements of Monopoly into our overall plans. (We didn’t pick World of Warcraft or Nintendo because we couldn’t see an elegant way of doing so. We had even seen the amazing Nintendo cake that has made its rounds around the web, but, Mr. Petunia especially, thought we didn’t want the wedding to turn so kitschy).

The first thing we came up with was to name the tables after properties and style the escort cards after deed cards.

Please understand that I would normally consider myself incapable of any DIY projects, but I gave it a go and here’s what our mock ups look like:

They’re not perfect yet, (maybe a little bland…) but I hope they will be! For one, they’re just printed on good old plain letter sized paper. For another, scissors or trimmers, rulers or guides, I can’t seem to cut a straight line to save my life. I’m also not positive that the scaling is right, in terms of font size and what not. But altogether, I was surprised at how much I liked them!

Plus, Mr. Petunia is really the Photo Shop capable one. These were just done on Word. I’m hoping he will be able to clean them up for us!

Now here are our options:

1. Pick the properties we like and/or that have some meaning. For example, my sister’s family will mostly occupy one table. They lived in Kentucky for a better part of their lives, so they could sit at Kentucky Avenue. We would recreate the original colors of the properties. And, we’d consider avoiding Baltic and Mediterranean, etc. so that no one would feel slighted at sitting in the “cheap” properties. (Though to be honest, people run into that problem with numbers, too: if you’re sitting at table 15, you know you’re not a close friend of the family…).

2. Choose the properties we like but re-create them in our color scheme — pink and green — or simply black & white. Mr. Petunia does not like this idea. He says it’s absolutely necessary for us to recreate the board colors as they are, or no one will get that they’re supposed to be mirroring Monopoly.

3. Choose only the pink and green properties from the board. However, we’re expecting to have about 10 tables, so we’d need another 4. The railroads would do nicely, as they are black & white.

If we go with option 1, will the escort card table look like a rainbow, since we’d be using all the board’s colors?

I think option number 1 would be really cute! Then it’ll really look like a monopoly set with a set of deeds for each set of colored properties (or in your case, one table).

Love the idea! I kind of like the idea of using different colours… I think it is going to look fab when it all comes together!

I agree, I love the idea of option number 1. Perhaps I am slightly biased since I am inclined to colorful things, but it should make for a nice photo, wouldn’t it? =)

Great job with the Monopoly “theme”. Like you said, it may be a little bland right now, but I can totally see it and I think you have the potential to perfect it! Wonderful start, I’m so excited for you!

This is such a great idea! And it sounds like it’s so appropriate for you and your fiance. I too would vote for option #1 because it’s really executing the theme to the fullest extent. The table might look a bit like a rainbow, but so what? I agree with L that it would make a cool picture, and you’re already injecting a bit of whimsy with the whole concept, so why not go all the way? I can’t wait to see how this project progresses.

Cute idea! For the escort cards it might be nice to make them that same square-ish shape that the Monopoly cards are.

If you really want Nintendo incorporated somehow, you could surprise your hubby with a Nintendo groom’s cake. I’m sure he would love it! I’m getting my fiance a “Highway to Hell” cake because he likes to claim that that’s our “song.” Haha!

i really like this idea! i like #1 option best, with the larger, squarish card. people are more apt to link it to the monopoly theme. and then, make larger versions for the table numbers. you can even write in the menu on the big space that usually indicates the rent for the property.

very cute. monopoly is probably a better choice than WoW. we play too and i jokingly suggested to my fiance that we name tables after places in azeroth, i.e. the barrens, orgrimmar, etc. hehe.

Sandy: the names on the escort cards is in “Bickham Script”; the other font is the Monopoly font, which is called “Kabel”

I think option number one will be really cute! Go for it!

You know, I saw some wooden block letters on Faye and Greer (http://fayeandgreer.blogspot.com/2007/07/modern-press.html) that really reminded me of scrabble letters and I thought of you.
I don’t know if Scrabble is particularly meaningful, but I think something similar might look nice (with the scrabble numbers and all) if you wanted to pull in more games.

A while back they released a lot of those old games in nice classic editions in wooden boxes. If I remember correctly they were styled much the same as the original games, but a little more elegant. It might be good inspiration.

We were originally going to have this idea too! But I couldn’t think of how to pull it off as you pointed out elegantly.

FI and I love board games. We also love trivia. So we decided to make our save the dates Trivial Pursuit Cards.

There is the link if you would like to see the mock up.

I wanted to carry this into our reception as well but I thought it would look like a rainbow and thats not what I wanted.

I originally wanted to search yardsales for old game boards and have those on each table under the centerpieces.

We have given up on the idea, but you have inspired me to keep trying. It can be done and with elegance!

I’m so into this, I’m inviting myself to your wedding. Just come to grips with that right now.

Remember the TiVO wedding pictures that were going around? And all the kewl free stuff they got from TiVO, just by letting them know they were planning a TiVO wedding? In light of that, I would definitely suggest heading over to hasbro.com and just dropping them a line. Or send an invitation to Mr. Monopoly and see what happens. (443 Shaker Road, East Longmeadow, MA 01028)

In the meantime, you can print your own money–dollar dance anyone?

You’re awesome Sarah!

I had thought about this, but wasn’t sure about contacting them…I think now I WILL!

Lol: is that address for all of Hasbro or Monopoly-specific?

I can’t tell if that’s Hasbro’s address from the site. It’s the address on the back of the Monopoly Tournament Guidelines pdf, which I read because it cracked me right up.

There’s some contact info at monopoly.com, and an email form at hasbro.com.

Okay, thanks to Google, I can assert that 443 Shaker is the address for all of Hasbro. And now I’m going to look at it on the hybrid map to see if anyone’s waving.
