My Newest Obsession

August 17th, 2007 @ 3:44 pm by Mrs. Corn

I lived in Florida for five years right out of college. Down there, if even the slightest disturbance in the air shoots itself off the African coast, they track it incessantly.

Even though I am not in Florida anymore, I have been obsessively checking the hurricane reports on Weather.com. Why? Because if a storm decides to head up the coast, although it may not be a hurricane when it hits Rhode Island, it sure can mean a lot of rain. And I know I can’t control the weather, but I can do my best to control everything around it, and awareness is the first step.

Upcoming names for Atlantic storms: Felix, Gabrielle, Humberto, Ingrid, Jerry and Karen. You know they’ll form, it’s just a matter of figuring out which one it will be. Personally, I think it would be humorous if it was Hurricane Karen, considering that is my future MIL’s name :) (Which is a joke…I really do love my future MIL and she is in no way, shape or form resembles a hurricane).

What about you? Have you found yourself obsessing over the weather?

Chalk me up to another beach bride in RI tracking those darn hurricanes!!! On Thursday, my wedding will be 10 days out so I can officially do the 10 day forecast on weather.com.

I live in Miami, moved here for grad school. My first week here I was locked up in my lab waiting for a storm to hit since it is a hurricane resistant building. Since then I began volunteering with the Red Cross in the face of these events. You better believe I have learned to check the weather obsessively! I think it is part of the territory especially for us non-natives that have experienced life here ;)

I am also a destination bride that knows other destination ladies. Including some that are in the Caribbean and Mexico right now trying to get married this weekend. I am obsessive about the NHC site.

Oh as far as a storm being named after you… one of our bridal party members is named for Katrina and lives in the midwest. She was visiting and ended up being trapped here when Katrina hit us before it hit the Gulf Coast. She HATES that she shares the same name with that storm.

Later that year Wilma, my grandma’s name, also got us pretty good. Now my grandma was quite a force of nature too! :)

I am a coastal Georgia bride getting married in 29 days, and I have just started watching the weather like crazy. We rarely get hurricanes here (I’m praying that stays true!), but we’re honeymooning on Antigua, so needless to say, many prayers for good, non-hurricane weather are being said!

The first thing I did on the morning of the wedding was turn on the weather channel. When the first predictions came out, ten days prior, they were for a 60% chance of rain on our outdoor ceremony. Then 10%, then 30%, then 10% again…but on the day of, they predicted - and we got - a beautiful rain-free day.

Miss Corn, I’ve been in Ft. Lauderdale for 2 years and yes, when any little storm rolls in our direction, we tune into all the stations and weather.com for the latest news. LOL. Gotta love South Florida.

Oh yeah, we had to. Just barely missed a big snowstorm, too. Phew!

Yes! I lived in Florida for a year and a half. It’s a hard habit to break when your life revolves around weather. I not only have been obsessively checking weather for my wedding, but time of sunset and tides too. I don’t even recognize myself sometimes.

I totally obsessed over the weather, as I was dying to have my ceremony and cocktail hour outside. Especially the ceremony. It rained a lot in late May, and the week of my wedding rain was forecast all weekend. I was a wreck. But, it worked out perfectly. Before the wedding, it was cloudy but bright, perfect for outdoor photography, and then the sun came out for the ceremony! It did rain hours later, but I didn’t care.

I’m feeling a little sad now because we had an amazing honeymoon on St Lucia, and they apparently got hammered by Hurricane Dean today, their first hurricane in a long time (they’re very far south, so they don’t get a lot of hurricanes.) We loved the island, and have a friend there, so I hope she’s OK. BTW, “Karen” is also my mom’s name, and she hopes there will be a hurricane with her name! But a small one that doesn’t hurt anyone, of course.

Yes I have started obsessing… since we came from our apartment to where the wedding is Tuesday night. (wedding’s tomorrow). Crossing my fingers the rain holds off or comes earlier in the morning! But the temperature will be nice and cool, a welcome change from the hot hot temps we were having at home for the past couple weeks!

One more thing — good thing is, we aren’t going on (and haven’t planned yet) our honeymoon until december, so we don’t have to worry about our honeymoon destination getting hammered by a tropical storm on top of other last minute wedding stress!
