Brainstorming For Invites

August 20th, 2007 @ 9:32 am by Mrs. Peony

I whipped this up the other day while playing on my Mac:

z100095

Our monogram. Can you see the large L and two smaller J’s? What do you think?

I also started going through tons of pictures of invitations to get some ideas. While there are some very beautiful invitations out there, I could only find one example of a tri-lingual one. This is from Double Happiness Creations:

z100099

Very nice, but I wanted pocketfold style invites. Kinda like this one from Renaissance Writings:

z100103

But I didn’t want the Chinese and Korean translations to go into the pocket. A bit of a dilemma.

Then, à la Emeril, BAM! I got an idea. What if I had the Chinese and Korean translations on either side of the main page, folding down? Kinda like this:

z100107

(Original image taken from Cards & Pockets. Please excuse my poor rendering; I was too lazy to go to the Mac so I used Windows Paint.)

Can you picture it? I’m getting all giddy thinking about it! silly040 I will most likely be ordering the envelopes from Cards & Pockets since they’re only $1 each. Becky, their very nice, very patient rep whom I’ve been nagging incessantly, said the extra sheet will be $1.00-1.75 each (depending on what type of paper) and there will be a one-time setup charge of $130.  I promise I will post a break-down of the prices (and include lots of pictures) when I’m done!

what a brilliant idea! when i first read it, i pictured a booklet, but I love the fold-out idea– everyone gets equal billing!

I think the monogram is very hard to read. I didn’t know what the letters were until you mentioned it. Try to find a script font that’s less exaggerated. I love the pocketfold mockup for the Chinese and Korean translations!!!!! Great idea!

The fold-out (three language) idea is pretty cool. The monogram is tough to read but very pretty nonetheless. Great start!

The monogram is a little hard to read. You might want to try using two types of fonts. One for the middle letter and another for the other two.

Thank you to you both! dddd89 - believe it or not, that was the look I was going for with the monogram….I’m not too partial to them so I was just playing around to create a motif that incorporates our initials without look too monogram-y. But after thinking about it for a bit, we might not have one at all. We’ll see. Thanks for your honest input!

I think the monogram is hard to read, as well. Perhaps you could change the color of your and your FI’s initials?

Yes, the monogram is difficult to read. If you really want to use the same font for all of the letters, I would suggest trying to have the Js in a different color (darker).

Everything looks great, and although I know what you’re going for in your monogram, the first impression of it doesn’t say “monogram” but more like “wait a minute….what is that?”. I know you were going for something that doesn’t look too monogram-y, but the purpose of a monogram is to see the three letters. I think you could do just a little tweaking and make it a little more recognizable and still have it look not so monogram-y.

you might want to consider having either your initials a different colour so it stands out more

The “J” on the left looked like a “K” to me.

OK, sorry if I am just completely out of it, but I have a Mac, can you tell me how to make a monogram; that is super cool!
Thanks!

The monogram is a little too much. I couldn’t figure out the letters. Maybe one big exaggerated letter and the two on the side not soo much.

I love your idea of the invite! It’s a great way to incorporate all the cultures for your wedding!

i like the tri-fold idea for the invites in chinese and korean. that was a very clever way of handling it. great job.

but i agree that the monogram is hard to read. at first glance i couldn’t make out any of the letters.

hey miss peony. i think you should space your j’s a little further out and make the L a heavier weight.

i did these for my friend’s wedding:

http://www.xanga.com/monkichi21/573158281/invitations-check.html

she was chinese marrying a viet, so we did viet/english/chinese and i matched the colors to her bridesmaid dresses and i made her monogram.

feel free to contact me if you need any help. since i loved doing her invites, i’m hoping to maybe start up an asian invitation side business (i’m a graphic designer by trade). so, i’d love to help you ^_^ (hhjms [at] hotmail [dot] com).

that’s fabulous that you found someone to custom-make your pocketfolds! that’ll save you sooo much headache!

i agree with hoshi… i know you’re trying to go for something more stylistic and less distinct for each letter. but the swirls look a bit too messy. maybe if you at least made the L more distinct with a heavier bold and lighten the weight of the J’s it will be more pleasing to the eye.

that was my original dilemma - i was going to have the chinese and korean folding over the main part of the invitation. i was ready to give up and just do the chinese and korean as an insert.

at the bridal show i went to they had a pocket invitation with the english/chinese/korean being in the middle, just folded over on top of each other. it’s a bit hard to explain, and i don’t have a visual example. :-(

I also think the monogram is a bit too scrolly and hard to read. I like your idea of how to tacle 3 languages though!
