Flowers into Paintings

One of the many “little things” I never thought about when I got engaged was flower preservation. I would imagine it’s low on the list for most brides. After all, I’ve been engaged for 10 months and it’s only now coming to the forefront of my mind. And I wouldn’t have considered it at all except for the fact that I read about another future bride’s thoughts on the subject. So, here are some of the options I read about:

1. Throw it out and don’t think twice

2. Get it professionally preserved (one top company is Heller and Reid - prices ranging from $350-$550, including a shadow box for display)

3. Dry it or press the flowers yourself

4. Have them freeze dried

5. Silica gel preservation

6. Have it made into a candle (check out Designfinds)

7. Flowers into Paintings (what I’m doing!)

I went onto this website on a lark. I had noticed a response to the weddingbee post (thanks to Miss Kiwi and artsyvixen!) about flower preservation alternatives with this link for flowers into paintings. It was created and run by a Louisiana artist (Missy Cannon) who presses flowers and combines them with paint onto a canvas.

I contacted her and she responded promptly to answer my every question. She explained that I should select a few of my favorite of her paintings (from the website) and also pick up some paint swatches from my local hardware store. Once provided with that information, I just need to make sure to follow her detailed instructions on shipping the bouquet after the wedding and she would do the rest.

I’m really excited to preserve my flowers in this lasting piece of art. How are you planning to preserve your flowers?

I didn’t preserve my flowers… I threw my “toss bouquet” at the reception… and the next day gave my bridal bouquet to my mom– unfortunately she was not able to make it to my wedding so I dedicated the flowers to her and left it on her headstone at the cemetary.

That, to me, was more worthwhile than holding on to it.

That is a really pretty idea you are going to do.

We are composting the bouquet at our location. We are picking the flowers from the garden the morning of so it makes sense for us to leave them there.

It’s a nice idea. I was pretty tapped out with coordinating and paying for things like this, though. I gave my bouquet to my mom. I have the photos, that’s enough.

i think that is beautiful. But I think I want to give my bouquet to my FI’s grandma who won’t be able to make it that day.

This is one of the best ideas I’ve seen for flower preservation.

Too late for me; mine got seriously frostbitten (it was 20 degrees) and tossed. Dried out DH’s tho.

I’m having mine turned into a rosary, since I’m Catholic, and I will keep it in my shadowbox. Should I ever have a daughter who wishes to wed, that would be the item I would pass along to her.

I pitched mine after a few days when it died. I’m afraid I didn’t care for any of the “dust collector” options. I have pictures, that’s all I need.
