It’s Like Seeing An Alien

August 21st, 2007 @ 12:20 pm by Mrs. Pearl

On Saturday night, Mr. P and I went to The Grove for dinner and a movie. Apparently we have settled into this as our routine. We’re an old married couple after 3 weeks.I digress.

We thought about seeing Superbad, but after noting they already had a line at 9:30 for the 11:15 showing, we decided to skip it. We walked toward the exit and I heard someone yell out “Miss Pearl” (OK, my real unmarried last name, but you know what I mean). I saw it was a group of about 4 or so of my students from last year. I was glad to see them because in the summer time, I really miss my kids. We talked for a bit, then they went out in search of girls to hit on and we went off to leave.

I was thinking about it later and I realized that talking to them might have been potentially awkward . . . at least for them. I remember when I used to see my teachers out and about and it was like seeing an alien or a science experiment or something. It was something kind of creepy and bizarre — like a-whaaaaaaaaaaaaat, teachers actually go out to dinner/grocery shopping/to the mall?!?! And it hit me. I am that alien. I am that weird science experiment. As young and cool and fetch as I feel, high school graduation was 8 years ago.

I am a grown up.

i totally know how you feel. i’m a high school special education teacher and when my kids see me outside of school, i know what they’re thinking, “wow, she has life?”

Props for the “fetch” comment :-) No matter how grown up we become, movies like “Mean Girls” are still my guilty pleasure.

a bunch of my friends are teachers so it’s like living on the other side of the desk now for me too. it’s weird because i know they don’t live in the school like i used to think when i was younger. and they have friends! and i’m the friend. wow. it just keeps getting weirder.

In high school it was weird for me to see my teachers about and about, but you kind of expect it in college. Maybe it’s just cause I go to a small school, but I love seeing my profs over the summer.

Hee. I’m also a teacher so I feel you on the alien thing. When I lived in the same neighborhood I taught in, my students would see FI and I in Target. Talk about alien sighting! I teach little ones and they were excited, confused and a little embarrassed all at the same time! So funny.

Also, my own family member call me “the enemy”. Ha!

I teach Middle School, and it cracks me up, because they never know whether to act cool about running into their “teach” in public, or if they are “allowed” to just act as excited as they are. :)

I don’t mind seeing certain students out and about…becuase there are ones that treat it as less of an alien sighting because they have social skills.

When I student taught it was in a classroom of seniors…so for me the alien sighting was AT THE BAR when one girl was like, “hey, you were our student teacher!” Soooooo awkward (and yes, I was drunk–but I rarely am these days!–ha ha).

Holla! Class of ‘99, baby!
