Mrs. Kiwi, Los Angeles Age and Occupation in 06: 27, Bookkeeper Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, P.E. Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

Music of the Heart

August 21st, 2007 @ 1:32 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

In the words of Madonna (Like a Prayer), Let the Choir Sing! Mr. Kiwi has finally managed to track down the music/choir director for the church we’re marrying in. You’d think it would have been easier, considering they both work there, right? Well, it was harder than we thought- apparently she likes to stay far away from the school during the summer!

Yesterday morning, I put my nag suit on and made a list of things to ask the choir director, Maeve. The list included things like, “Do we really NEED an organist?” and family favorites such as, “Where can we find this music we’re supposed to choose from?” as well as, “When can we get started on this?”. Slid into Mr. Kiwi’s unsuspecting money clip, he went off to a meeting at work with two hello kitty notepad sheets filled with lists and questions.

Luckily, Maeve was more than willing to help us with any music questions. Since school starts soon, she asked for a little bit of time to gather the songs and readings together, before she helped us prepare our ceremony music. To answer some of my questions: 1.) She’s not sure we need a organist (why isn’t the church lady calling me back again?!) 2.) if we do need the organist to play, she can utilize her at the piano, where she is classically trained (I heard the organist make a blunder in another wedding a few months ago) 3.) Maeve will gather all the music she’s used in weddings before, and get together with us soon. As for when we can get started, Mr. Kiwi offered to take her to dinner, since she’s doing all the music for us for free (she usually has a fee)! When Maeve said the dinner wouldn’t be necessary, Mr. Kiwi told her that he knows HE works better with a margarita in hand, and so should she! When put that way, Maeve had to agree!

Thankfully this is starting to work out. Should we not need the organist’s participation, Maeve has offered to get someone else who is a little more contemporary for the piano. Maeve has suggested a choir made up of Mr. Kiwi’s former students, and a solo by a girl who was touring with The Lion King- in one of the lead parts! How cool is that? Now I can rest easy and return to finalizing the guest list. Which we know is always fun.whateva022

What kind of music do you/did you like for your ceremony? Classic or contemporary?

Oooooh, that’s so exciting!! Who was she in Lion King?!?

Since we weren’t at a church, we could have whatever we wanted and ended up going with fairly traditional sounding contemporary pieces. I should probably post on that sometime, huh.

But yeah, the choir with Mr. Kiwi’s former students will be awesome!!!

oh so fun! i just asked a good friend of mine to be my music director and it was such a relief to be able to pass that on to very capable hands. he’s gathering a group of my friends from our church young adult group to be my choir and although i’ve selected some traditional and contemporary songs, i’ve also left it up to him to fill in the gaps. i can’t wait to hear how it turns out! i think he’ll make the soundtrack to my wedding day very memorable!

Hi Wedding Bees,

I’m desperate for ribbon. I’m heading to the fabric district this week. Does anyone have any recommendations on stores I can purchase ribbon from in the Los Angeles fabric/fashion district?

I prefer the moldy oldies, all the way. I’ve been utilizing my music degree — and my summer downtime — and researching English composers’ music for our ceremony. I thought it would be an interesting, subtle nod to my fiance’s family. That being said, if I can find an organist for Widor’s Toccata, I’d be thrilled.

LADIY, why don’t you try fabric barn in long beach? in the LA fashion district, i get my double faced satin ribbon in Floral Supply Syndicate in the flower mart area off Wall Street, between 7th and 8th. they have ribbon by the bolt there.

in fabric district, i found that the ribbon is mostly sold by the yard. but you might just have to walk around and see what you find. regardless of where, they are all pretty good prices.

For the ceremony and cocktail hour I hired a slack key guitarist after hearing him perform at one of the local shopping centers. I’m crossing my fingers that his wife will be available too - she’s a fantastic hula dancer!

Virtually the only way my dad could consistently get the groom’s name right was to use “G&S” as a mnemonic, since dad was a big Gilbert and Sullivan fan. G&S operettas have plenty of songs about wedding and wooing and what-have-you, and I have a tiny amount of experience arranging music for brass quintet, so…

Yeah, arranging the music was the #1 biggest wedding task, by a longshot, but it was also my #1 priority.
