Beehive

August 23rd, 2007 @ 3:47 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. Jenny K is making 10 flower centerpieces for a bridal shower, and she needs simple, fast, and stunning ideas.  She likes the submerged flowers, but don’t they float?  She doesn’t want to add stones to the bottom of the vase.
  2. dots wants to know what an appropriate corkage fee is?  She’s not bringing alcohol to the reception, but her venue wants to charge $6.50 - $9.50 pp on top of the 15% gratuity on the sale of alcohol.
  3. notKristen is having a caricature artist sketch guests at her Art Gallery reception in lieu of favors.  Do you have any ideas about the best way for him to get to everyone without having people wait in line?  She doesn’t want to distract from the reception but wants to make sure everyone who wants one gets one.
  4. angela found her perfect dress but it’s 2x her max budget and she can’t find it for less anywhere. Would she be kicked out of the boutique if she asked them to refer her to past brides who have purchased the dress to see if they’d be interested in selling?  She’s desperate!
  5. May ‘08 bride is having a “surprise” bridal shower in Monterey, CA.  Any suggestions for affordable venues?
  6. Crimsonsky is making her veil with her mom.  They bought the tulle but need strung sequins to sew onto the edging.  Know where to look?  Joanns and Michaels didn’t turn up anything.
  7. starkid is getting married at the end of September, but she’s been suffering from wisdom teethache.  Should she get them pulled?  Would the swollen gums go away in time?

Dots- that is the craziest thing i’ve heard of site-related; if you are not providing alcohol, you should pay for a bartender and the alcohol and that’s it

Jenny K- what about a fishbowl vase with three large roses (or other flower) sticking out in three different directions? or (not as fancy but my current favorite) a dozen snapdragons in a short, square vase? or four large roses heads submerge in a short, square vase (so that the fill the bottom and the vase goes just a little higher than the tops of the flowers)

Andria– I agree that there must be something else he was upset about; maybe he secretly thinks you don’t like his name or are backing out on your agreement somehow. or maybe he was just upset about something else that day and couldn’t handle you changing something you had agreed on. hopefully he’ll be calmer about it now and be able to explain where he’s coming from. if not, then you might have a problem.

Angela– again, if you say which dress and size, someone on weddingbee may be able to help you find it.

starkid– as long as it’s at least 2 weeks before the wedding (and you don’t need to be functional the week it happens, that is) you should be fine

starkid, yes, you’ll be fine. schedule the appt now to avoid anything. but end of sept is far enough away.

crimsonsky, sorry to say that you might have to make these yourself…

angela, have you tried pearl’s place? http://www.pearlsplace.com. they seem to be able to get a hold of a large variety of dresses for much much less. they deal only with phone calls though, but they’re very responsive. good luck!

angela - i’m pretty sure they would not give you that information. Go to all the knot boards, try ebay and craigslist and try pre owned wedding dress websites.

starkid - get. rid. of. them. NOW. Even in the worst case scenario, the swelling/tenderness will be gone in about 2 weeks, and you do not want to be in avoidable pain on your big day. Good luck!

Dots- Not totally sure I understand, but typically you either pay per person for open bar or per consumption, plus gratuity. If you’re paying per consumption, and they are providing the alcohol, there should not be an additional corkage fee. Check your original contract though - if it’s in there, you may be stuck.

Angela - try http://www.preownedweddingdresses.com/ or similar sites. Or ask about buying a sample. I would not ask the store for contact info. I would personally be upset if my bridal shop gave out my personal information to someone, and I would suspect it is not totally legal for them to do it.

Crimsonsky - try G Street or a local fabric store. They should sell it by the yard.

starkid- Oh honey, I just went through the same thing! From experience, get them pulled and get them pulled now else they’ll get worse. I had one of the worst post-surgery reactions my dentist has seen is his 50 years of dentistry and I was good to go in a week and a half. Word of advice from experience-get them pulled awake. I know that sounds crazy and stoneage, but they won’t take as much liberties with your mouth and you heal MUCH quicker! They numb you up so much you won’t even know what’s going on.

Angela, also try Vows in Newton, MA. I’ve never been there but the website is bridepower.com It’s right near where I live so if you need someone to check something out, I’ll do it for you! (And I will go there when the time comes for dress shopping!) Good luck

JennyK- This isn’t a water arrangement, but here’s what I did when I made centerpieces for a friend’s shower. It was easy and they were a huge hit.

-Craft store rose vases (those round ones with the rippled edges- they’re like $1 each).
-Ribbon in a light green that goes from light to dark (what’s that called again?) and a white with a pretty pink embroidered flowers.
-Roses & peonies in the brides color (pink) and white. If you gently pry roses open a little they’ll be bigger, hence fewer needed.
-Some fake green grass from the faux flowers aisle and a like 2 bags of clear plastic things (they looked like diamonds).

I wrapped the ribbon around the top of the vases and tied a small bow– some vases had one color, some had the other. I put either some of the plastic things, or a few pieces of grass in the vases. (Since you don’t want rocks, you probably don’t want plastic diamond things.) The grass I put in a circle, so it went around the vase. You could also use a long leaf. I stripped the flowers of their leaves and measured hoe short to cut so they sit just on the ripply part of the top of the vase. I arranged them to look full and pretty and–bam! centerpieces.

If there’s a flower that you want to put in the water and you’re not sure, just buy one and see if it sinks! If you do that, craft stores usually have rectangle vases that are short for $1 or $2. That way you could put two flowers end to end (with the stems cut, naturally) so the flower could be seen from both sides. Orchids would be great for that! Good luck!

crimsonsky- i looked for the same thing when my fiance and i made my veil, and we ultimately had to hand-string our beads, then attach those strings to the edge of the tulle…sorry i don’t have better news, but i can tell you that you can string many a bead while watching tv! good luck!

Follow up Question: Does anyone have any idea what I can do, if i don’t have dental insurance? : / People have told me as well — if it hurts a lot right now, I can’t get my teeth pulled until the pain subside. Is that true?

Crimsonsky - try a dance supply or ice skating supply store. Those costumes usually have beading and sequence on them.

Starkid- Get them pulled within the next week! Make sure the surgeon has a good success history. I had mine pulled last year by an excellent dr and was back on my feet, swelling gone, and off painkillers in a week. Without the minor infection I had, it would have been sooner than that! Plus, I lost about 4 lbs. ;)

The last thing you want is to be in excruciating pain on your wedding day!

Starkid-

I’d ask your dentist for a referral to an oral surgeon tomorrow. The surgeon will have to first meet with you and look at your xrays before s/he can determine how much it will cost. You’ll also get an answer to whether you can get them done right away (if they are painful now, they’ll only get worse..so I think waiting until the pain subsides is bad advice). When you ask your dentist for a referral also ask if the dentist knows of any surgeons who allow you to pay in installments.

Also, it’s usually cheaper to not get put to sleep during the surgery. Although, honestly, if you can afford it, be asleep. I was–it was so quick and I healed very fast. No problems at all (just don’t deviate from the sugeon’s post-sugery rules! Ice, ice, ice.)

PS- w/o dental insurance, I’d ask for a sliding scale payment schedule. And yes, the infection/pain must go down before they’ll pull ‘em. My dr gave me an antibiotic and a painkiller for a week before the surgery– yours will too.

Starkid–maybe contact a local dental school? I had mine done at a university by students. I know it might sound crazy, but they are actually more meticulous than established dentists and are VERY HIGHLY supervised. Good luck–I feel your pain!

I want to sell these white dyeable David’s Bridal shoes that I haven’t worn yet. I ended up going with another pair of shoes (my wedding is in October so I haven’t worn them yet). Does anyone want to buy them for $50 flat, including shipping? I think it’s about $55 or something plus tax. I don’t want it to go to waste!

Here’s the link: http://www.davidsbridal.com/accessory_detail.jsp?stid=2211&prodgroup=169

Starkid- do it now! Wisdom teeth surgery is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be (and I’m a MAJOR wimp)- I was 100% recovered within a week of having my pulled, and the swelling was gone within 4 days. Honestly- you’ll be fine! Good luck!!

Starkid - not to add to your stress but a word of advice - make sure whoever you end up with has a good track record, and be sure to get antibiotics. My cousin had her wisdom teeth out and her dr did not prescribe antibiotics.. she ended up with a big infection and had to be hospitalized. Extreme case and I don’t want to scare you, but just insist on getting antibiotics b/c you should be able to prevent this situation! Also I’d advise being very meticulous about cleaning and watching what you eat the first couple of weeks afterwards… you don’t want to end up with an infection or dry socket.

Now me personally - I had no problems, and was good to go after a couple of days. Hope it works out!!

starkid - feel better, give yourself a week or two for the swelling

I was lucky when I had all 4 of mine yanked. I was able to run later that day (my mouth was packed with gauze but I could do it) and everything was back to normal in three days.

starkid - i’d get them done as soon as possible. if they’ve cut through your gums already, you may be able to just have a regular dentist pull them out if you can stomach it. that’s what i did…i went to a surgeon for the two bottom ones because i needed the surgery and when the top one finally decided to get in on the act [3 years later!] with no insurance, i just went to my dentist…i think it only cost a couple hundred? i don’t remember.

in terms of healing, i was sore for a few days but the swelling was gone within a week and a half. though they advised against it, i was eating solid foods the day after the surgery [very carefully] because i was hungry and tired of mashed potatoes [weird story].

if you have a dentist, i’d HIGHLY suggest you discuss your options with him. some places also have payment plans you can look into as well [mine tacked on a "good patient" discount to help bring down the cost of the procedure]. ask around but do something quick so you’ll have time to heal and be able to eat the day-of.
