Birds!

August 23rd, 2007 @ 12:57 pm by Mrs. Bee

Update: More birds added!

~~~
You guys loved the idea of birds as our next batch of characters, so now we just need to decide which ones!
Here’s an interesting tidbit I found out while googling bird images - the white doves that are released at weddings are not really doves; they’re actually white homing pigeons who are much stronger flyers and will return home!
Now on to the task at hand - please help us choose 10 birds for our next batch of characters!
Lovebirds and Chicakadee
lovebirds.jpgchickadee.jpg
Crane and Oriole and Quail
Hummingbird and Peacock
Cockatiel and Penguin
Ostrich and Swan
Dove (also in white) and Bluebird
Parakeet and Parrot/Macaw
Toucan and Robin
Duck and Flamingo
We’re looking for a good color variety, birds that don’t look too similar and birds that you’d actually want to be, so tell us your top ten picks!  (Feel free to also suggest more additions!)
Julie says:
What about a type of Finch, there are so many varieties of colors.
I adore the lovebirds. The peacock and penguin are also very cute. So is the flamingo.
Also check out Sun Conure: http://z.about.com/d/birds/1/0/D/-/-/-/PC100011.JPG
They are so pretty.
Also you have the blue and gold macaw under parrot but there is the scarlet as well which is pretty.
2.
Lydia says:
Instead of my 10 faves, here’s my list of ones to eliminate (these all look too similar to others that I would definitely keep):
Dove, Parakeet, Robin, Woodpecker, Chick, Cockatiel
Impatience says:
So pretty!
I like:
Peacock, penquin, swan, dove, chick, duck and flamingo.
I would be sooooo crazy thrilled to be Miss Mallard (the duck you have listed). Ducks are great! Of course, the one in the picture is the male of the species, but they are the prettier ones.
Anyway. Babbling. :) The birds are beautiful!
8.
Moi says:
Baltimore loves the Oriole (orange/black).
9.
Ashley says:
Love the chick, the peacock, penguin, flamingo, swan and, of course, the lovebirds! This will make for some very lucky bees :)
14.
Miss Kiwi says:
Man, I can’t pick.
I do know… Miss Chick sounds weird. I’d go canary for that one.
I think Lovebird, Flamingo, Toucan, Penguin, Swan, Robin and Woodpecker!
Honestly, I love the bluebird.
15.
Samantha says:
Love the choices! Here are a few more
Bluejay
woodpecker - black/red
oriole - orange or yellow and black
16.
Sarahdoo says:
those birds are beautiful. im more partial to the colorful ones, i supose.
…but then, why am i so drawn to the penguin? i think it’s his self-assured swagger.
21.
Mrs. Snow Pea says:
The birds are a great idea!
What? No Miss Turkey?
22.
bunnybride says:
There are a lot of great suggestions here! I have one more… Jacana… it is a colorful bird and one of the few animals where the female has a harem of males that watch her eggs within her territory. LOL! They crack me up!!
23.
BD says:
My favorites:
Peacock
Hummingbird
Robin
Toucan
Parrot or Parakeet
Cardinal
24.
polly says:
Hummingbird
Peacock
Swan
Robin
Dove
Lovebird
Penguin
Blue Bird ( very cute… even if you already have bluebell and blueberry)
Chickadee ( I think this one sounds cuter than Miss Chick)
Flamingo
25.
Miss Emerald says:
I love the sound of Miss Peacock and Miss Lovebird!!
26.
Moi says:
Miss Turkey — funny, Miss Snow Pea! She would be a healthy but sleepy November bride.
Miss Chicken/Chick makes me think of KFC…
Would Miss Grey Goose be a bird or a drink?
Would Miss Quail be a Republican? (Yeah, Quayle, I know…)
27.
wsukarebear says:
1- Penguin
2- Peacock
3- Flamingo
4- Swan
5- Duck
6- Toucan
7- Parrot
8- Canary
9- Hummingbird
10- Ostrich (not sold on this one)
Okay I can’t think of a tenth…ha ha, the IBIS is really pretty and I teach a story to my ninth graders called The Scarlet Ibis: ttp://tinyurl.com/2psles There’s a white Ibis that populates Florida. :-)
28.
Laura S says:
Peacock, hummingbird, penguin, toucan, swan, cardinal, canary, flamingo, lovebird, parrot.
Love them! I also like robin and parakeet, and I agree that Miss Chick is kind of weird and we have too many “blue-” Mrs. already so perhaps no Miss Bluebird.
29.
Moi says:
How about the beautiful crowned crane — also suits Asian themes!
P.S. What happens when Miss Peacock gets married… Will it be Mrs. Peacock in the billiard room with the candlestick!?
30.
Bee Icon
Mrs. Bee says:
i don’t think anyone wants to be miss turkey. ;)
and i love the bluebird, but you’re right that we already have so many “blue” characters…
any other blue birds besides the “blue” jay?
and i like the goose, but do you think it’ll look too similar to the swan?
31.
Bee Icon
Mrs. Bee says:
and though there are many pretty, less commonly known birds, my only concern is that no one will want to be them. :)
32.
Moi says:
How about the Canada goose which has a distinct coloring.
Also, maybe this doesn’t matter, but isn’t it mostly the male birds that have the beautiful colors and feathers, and the females are more plain? But WB would use the more distinct males for the icons?
33.
Miss Petunia says:
The Hummingbird FOR SURE and because I’m a Florida girl, the Flamingo all the way! 8
34.
ktbuffy says:
I would LOVE to be Miss Duck — mostly because my sweetie already calls me duck!
Otherwise, I love the penguin and the hummingbird best.
35.
Bee Icon
Miss Kiwi says:
Can I be Miss Kiwi/Kiwi?
Bird and Fruit?
And if not bluebird, what about bluejay?
36.
Ashley says:
Aw, just saw you updated your list (yes, I’ve already posted once) and wanted to add that I love the Chickadee… much improved over the chick, even though it was so darling. My FH calls me his little chickadee, though I didn’t know it was an actual bird!
37.
Bee Icon
Mrs. Bee says:
ha that’s why I didn’t add kiwi - there already is a miss kiwi! :D
and bluejay still has the word “blue” in it… :(
38.
Bee Icon
Miss Kiwi says:
I wanted to add: loooooove the Quil. I replace Bluebird with Quail. If not blue*** how about the ScrubJay? Like a bluejay, but without the word Blue.
39.
Bee Icon
Miss Kiwi says:
Me again: Puffin?
40.
Bee Icon
Mrs. Bee says:
i thought of the puffin too, but for some reason thought it was too similar to a penguin?
and you’re right - the quail is a cute substitute for bluebird!
41.
gabzoots says:
I don’t have a suggestion, but I have to say, I love the idea of having a Ms. Chick! hehe :)
42.
maverika says:
There’s the Indigo Bunting? Could be Miss Bunting: http://www.naturesound.com/birds/hires/bntng.jpg
50.
Moi says:
Also like a quail is the Partridge — but with cute connotation from the Partridge Family or a partridge in a pear tree. Cuter than a pheasant.
51.
Erika says:
I like chick, peacock, hummingbird, dove and penquin…some of them like duck look masculine..
52.
Firesong says:
You could use a bluejay picture and call it “Miss Jay.”
A lot of the birds you’ve pictured are the males of the species: the oriole, the peacock, the ostrich, the cardinal, the mallard, I’m not sure about the quail. Does that matter? Also, European robins and American robins are different. You’ve pictured a European robin. I guess they are cuter…
53.
Firesong says:
P.S. How about a Heron?
54.
Bee Icon
Mrs. Bee says:
i know but the males are often so much prettier. :)
and i think the heron looks too similar to the crane?
55.
nhung says:
i love all your choices you listed for bird.
what about phoenix. that’s my favorite bird, though it’s mythological. from the ash she raise, and live on forever. remember heman? =)
58.
Meg says:
These are my favorites, in no order:
Peacock
Penguin
Ostrich
Swan
Macaw
Toucan
Cardinal
Canary
Duck
Flamingo
59.
Jenny says:
Peacock, quail, hummingbird, swan, ostrich, penguin, bluebird, toucan, chick, and duck! I love ducks!
60.
Kate says:
I love robins, but I prefer American robins to the English (or European?) robin you have pictures.
Pheasants are absolutely gorgeous, but when it comes down to it, they’re game birds - along with ducks, geese, quail and turkey. I might stay away from the birds that people hunt.
Peacock is a shade of blue, as is robins-egg. That way, you can steer clear of blue-something names.
How about a mockingbird?
Top 10 Listed:
lovebird, chickadee, oriole, hummingbird, peacock, penguin, swan, robin, canary, cardinal
61.
LB says:
how about a loon for a minnesota blogger?
64.
M says:
Definately hummingbird, penguin, and dove.
I also like the love birds and ostrich!
How about a loon or pelican
Crowned pigeons are pretty, but maybe Miss Crowned Pigeon is too long of a name?
65.
My says:
I am in love with the hummingbird…
66.
ECLECTUS PARROTS!
These are my babies:
http://flickr.com/photos/blackscorpio/sets/72057594095614711/
These parrots are dimorphic, meaning the females are readily distinguishable from the males. The Red eclectus are female. The Green eclectus are male. Mine talk up a storm! They have daily chatters such as:
“Hi, Bebe”
“How are you?”
“Whatcha doin’?”
“Coca Cola”
“Holy crap!”
=D
78.
apple says:
I like maverika’s format:
Red: Cardinal
Orange: an orange paper Crane
Yellow: rubber Ducky
Green: Hummingbird
Blue: Bluebird or Heron
Purple: Peacock
Pink: Flamingo
Brown: Owl or Mockingbird
White: Dove
Black: Raven
i enjoy the sound of “Miss Swan” (MadTV) and “Miss Jay” (ANTM) and i like the idea of a predatory bird like Eagle/Falcon/Hawk, but i don’t know if anyone would want to be those.
