Edit: As listed on Scott’s website, his rates begin at $7,500, which include: Scott, as your photographer, a second shooter, an engagement session with 20×30 museum mounted print, proof prints, source files, and an online slideshow with enhanced images. A deluxe hand crafted custom design with 50 images starts at $2,500. Scott offered us a special rate that was custom for us as we’re booking him for not one but TWO days (yes I know super lucky!) Another option is to book through one of Scott’s associate photographers, whose packages begin at $5,500.

I encourage those of you to contact the photographer whose work you love, because most photographers are willing to work with you to customize a package especially when they know you appreciate their work.  It doesn’t hurt to contact them to find out what they have to offer and see if it’s a fit for you.

For those of you who are interested in Scott, please feel free to contact him. Just let him know that Miss Cherry Blossom sent you since he currently has a few “friends and family” rates available still for 2008, and you just might be on your way to booking Scott for your wedding!

~~~
I am a very click happy person. Translation: I am a psycho-maniac when it comes to pictures. Even before digicams, I always had a camera on me, which is probably the reason why friends come to me for the chronicles of their lives - at least for HS and celebrations. The obsession and the collection has only gotten worse since I’ve become a digicam owner. Hence, searching for THEE right photographer was a very important task for me. After all the blood, sweat, and tears from the countless DIY details/projects and hard work that go into planning the wedding, all that is left are the precious photos that capture your priceless memories.
I had always admired Scott Robert’s work long before I was engaged.  I was really nervous and hesitant about contacting Scott. Mr. Cherry Blossom had heard me rave about his work for a long time and having visited his site, was half ruling out his services because of the price range. Having nothing else in mind except the date of our wedding set for another year and half later, I just had to contact Scott and set a date to meet when he was in town doing a workshop.
While we had the time before we met with Scott, we decided to meet with other photographers to give ourselves a chance to review other photographers’ work.
  1. Jade Studio Production - A girlfriend of mine had gotten married several months prior to our engagement so we were able to sample their work through their wedding album.
    Pros: offers amazing selection of in-house custom design albums, told us EVERYTHING a bride/groom would want to hear and made us feel confident in their reliability and work, one-stop photography and cinematography studio
    Cons: they were beyond the bubble of our price range
  2. Kurty Photography - Local and popular photographer, I’ve seen friends and familiar faces on his website
    Pros: very affordable, offers a lot different packages, experienced photographer who’s been in the industry, offers great selection of albums, featured on many wedding websites such as The Knot and Wedding Channel
    Cons: not really our style, had more a traditional feel to the photos
  3. Loveliness - Popular Taiwanese photography studio and recommended by friends and FSIL who’ve used their services
    Pros: one stop shop: photography and videography, offer rentals on wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, tuxes, hair and make up, affordable
    Cons: again not really our style, a lot more traditional than we were seeking
  4. Bella Pictures - Referred by friend who was using their services for their wedding
    Pros: Very affordable, offered great packages and options including CD of all master files, friendly service by Melanie Lessen, huge community of photographers that work for the company freelance
    Cons: Based on your reviews/critiques on a portfolio they would pair you with the best photographer to suit your needs, you’d find out your photographer 60 days before your wedding
We met Scott for the first time over dinner, which Scott so generously paid for. Even before we met, I felt like I already knew Scott from following his blog, where he blogged about his family and updated frequently with photos of weddings and events. I recall my nervousness when I called him the first time - he quickly put me at ease since I was so nervous to speak with the photographer that I had been raving about for so long. I felt like I was talking to a celebrity. LOL! I barely needed to ask any questions, as he addressed all the concerns we had and showed us, well mainly Mr.CB, all the range of his work.
I love the angles that he captures in photos and how natural the couples look even when posed; and even more I love his pre and post processing! The way the colors pop in pictures just blew me away and I just knew I had to have him. I’m not the only admirer as I’ve learned many other brides share their joy of booking the same photographer with me. He has a huge following. I just never thought we’d book him, but after much discussion and many a shifting of our budget (with a LOT of things I’ve had to cut down on), we got Scott!
While I was investigating photographers, I noticed that the quality of work that on their websites are at times extremely touched up/photoshop-ed. Of course..they wouldn’t put anything inferior on their sites. I found it helpful when someone refers a photographer to see the shots “in the raw”. I noticed that the ones touched up and posed look great! but in actuality, the dvd photos they got weren’t quite as captivating.
luckily i have a cousin who is a phoshop pro and can touch up the pictures if they photog took them at the right angle and lighting, but i think we need to delve deeper into their true work in the raw.
anyone can photoshop, right?!
i DO love the photos on this entry!!!
Leesuh - Very good point and I totally agree. That was my exact concern as well. That’s why at each appointment, I specifically requested to view a few albums and proof books and spent a long time with each photographer looking at several if not more albums by each photographer - which gave me a great way to view how they told the couple’s story and all the different photos they took.
I believe you have to start with a great raw picture too in order to photoshop it to enhance what the picture already had to start with. I loved that Scott posted before and after of pictures that he had posted on his blog.
I need to learn to photoshop! =)
Scott Robert is the BEST!!! I can say this with confidence because he was our photog for our engagement and wedding (just last month). We are so HAPPY with our pictures and we love the slideshow that he did. He’s worth it! Just think after your wedding is all over all you have are pictures (and video) to look at! Scott is super nice and so fun to work with. He has a great personality and best of all he produces wonderful pictures time after time! My advice to all the brides is to go beyond the photographer’s website! Check out their blogs so you can see their most current work. Scott’s xanga blog is awesome! Yes I agree everyone can Photoshop but not many people can Photoshop like Scott!
For a package like that, the price seems really steep. I guess that must be the going rate in SF?!
I’m so glad you shared about Scott Robert, Miss CB! I’ve been a huge fan of his for the last few years, long before my fiance and I were engaged. We want to ask him to be our wedding photographer, but aren’t sure if we can afford him…can you elaborate what you mean by “friends and family” rates? And do you know how many more he has available? I’m kind of nervous to email him…I too feel like he’s a celebrity!
Please do not go with Loveliness. We went with them for our engagement shots 4 months before the wedding and they did not have our canvas or album ready until the NIGHT before the wedding. I called them at least twice a week for a month to rush them and they never had the pictures ready. It was ridiculous and their pictures weren’t even that great.
I am SO glad I booked Kurty for the wedding day pictures. He was great! We paid a little over $5000 for about 12-13 hours of coverage. My husband can’t smile naturally for pictures but Kurty got the natural smile out of him!!!
Thanks for adding the cost. Particularly good to know in my case, as his normal rate is my ENTIRE WEDDING BUDGET!! ;-)
(One of my absolute favorite photojournalist-style photogs here in DC is in the range, too, and it just makes me cry…. But if they’re talented and there are people who can pay it, I say why not charge what the market will bear?)
Shirls ( & Holli) - I don’t know how many more packages he has available. But you should definitely not feel shy to contact him. If it makes you more comfortable, try emailing him first. My nervous crazy self called him from work and I was all jittery. Don’t know what I was thinking. haha. But seriously he is ubber nice and extremely approachable, funny guy might I add.
As far as the “friends and family” packages, it’s a lower rate that he is offering - he can go into more details with you. =)
Sara, I’m in Manhattan and 10k is way more then I am paying–and I’m using one of NYC’s top shutterbugs, Cappy Hotchkiss. You CAN get equally as excellent quality pictures for less if you look…That said, Scott’s pics are beautiful!
honestly, i’d rather get joe buissink for that price. :P but scott is good, especially his penelope and stello series. however, i think he post-processes his photos a bit too much. i like clean, crisp shots, some processed to give a more romantic look, others to emphasize color, etc…but i don’t like ones that totally look photoshopped. but it is all about preference. but dude, if i could get away charging $10K minimum, i might be all over it too. i just think scott is super nice, but his is also a super smart marketer. that’s half the game. :) and good for him. he has done well!
Caitlyn - these were prices quoted to me from the beginning of 07.
Jade Studios - $7900 base package - 6 hrs, 2 photogs
Kurty - $3500 base package - 5 hrs, 1 photog
Loveliness - $2699 base package - 12 hrs, 2 photogs
Bella - $1500 base package (since then prices have definitely risen) 6 hrs - 1 photog
Hope that helps.
Interesting, I have subscribed to Scott’s blog for a while now :) He even left me a message on mine when I first subscribed! Nice guy indeed. I didn’t know how it works to book a photographer from out of town. Do their rates include travel?
