Mr. D had convinced me that we weren’t getting engaged until the summertime, so he took me by complete surprise! I got back from my overseas Christmas vacation on the morning of 12/29/06. Mr. D met me at the airport and picked me up. I was very jetlagged and exhausted so I took a nap as soon as I got home. Little did I know how convenient that was for him, because he had been busy setting everything up since the night before
.
After a few hours, Mr. D woke me up to get ready for a nice dinner out…we were going out for post-Christmas, pre-New Years dinner. As we were about to head out the door, he suddenly remembered that my roommate had emailed him earlier that day, asking him to grab something she left on the roof when she had gone up there (our building has an amazing roof that overlooks the Bay). We were going to go up there and then leave right after, so I went up with him. At the top of the stairs, I opened the door to this…

So perdy! I was very impressed and overwhelmed
, not to mention in complete confusion and shock. We proceeded to have a lovely candlelit dinner on this new pretty dinnerware, complete with a gorgeous view, a matching tablecloth and red rose petals everywhere. We could even hear the live jazz coming from pier nearby, and there just happened to be fireworks over the bay that evening too. Mr. D had ordered dinner from one of our favorite SF restaurants (The House). I suppose I kind of suspected what he was doing but dismissed it as wishful thinking; that it was just a special night out in light of the fact that the next few months were going to be super busy and we wouldn’t be seeing each other much.
After dinner, he gave me my “Christmas present”. Now, I must backtrack here a bit and provide some context. I absolutely love photography and scrapbooking, so back in 2004, on our one-year anniversary, Mr. D had made me a scrapbook chronicling our friendship over the years and the first year of our relationship. Strangely enough, he took out that same scrapbook. It turns out that he had actually left a few pages blank in the back that he had been planning for this specific purpose! He told me to look through it…he had made a few new pages for me. I flipped through the pages…he added so many memories from our years in California, weekend trips that we had taken, all the way up to memories from even the prior weeks.
On the very last page, I found a long letter…he wrote about what he had learned throughout our relationship, how much the Lord has blessed us, about things to come, what he loved about me, how I was the only one for him…and how he was ready to take the next step
. To my own surprise, I had already started crying by then (I honestly thought my reaction when he proposed would’ve been jumping up and down in excitement, but I was sobbing instead hehe).
Mr. D was already down on one knee (poor thing, he had been on his knee the whole time I was reading!). He told me that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me, that he wanted to have dogs with me (we love dogs! and yes, he actually said that )… Actually, that was really all I remember, because I was crying so I couldn’t really hear him. He had to ask me if that meant a yes, and if I was happy or sad
. I said…”yes yes yes yes yes
“.

So that’s our engagement story!
Hope you all enjoyed that. I can’t wait until our engagement photo session…We’re taking them in a few months so that we can use them on our save-the-dates!
