Mrs. Gummi Bear, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 25, Japanese Importer/Illustrator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Game Developer/Programmer Engagement Date: April 15, 2006 Wedding Date: October 13, 2007 Blogging Since: June 19, 2007 Venue: Organic farm an hour from San Francisco About Me: I live for anthropologie, design blogs, sweets, japanese zakka, and vintage goods. We just bought our first home together and live with our two puppies and cat - it's a strange mixture of vintage, high-tech (we have 7 computers and 21 video game systems in all), and a whole lot of fur. Our wedding tries to embody the Japanese idea of "slow life", which is truly taking the time to enjoy food, company, and your environment!
About Mrs. Gummi Bear

Everyone wants to know where we’re going on our honeymoon, but honestly, we haven’t planned one! Mr. GB will be starting a new contract on a game in fall, we have the house and animals to take care of… and we can’t think of anywhere we’d like to go in October or November! It gets cold, and Mr. GB and I are both bay area weather wimps. What do you MEAN it gets under 50 and over 80? What kind of madness is this!?

And I’m not sure why, but people keep suggesting or assuming it’ll be Japan. I used to live there and I go regularly for work and visiting friends, I can’t think of it as an exotic location to take a trip! I want to use my honeymoon as an excuse to go somewhere I haven’t been and probably won’t go again for a while, if ever… hopefully not because I got sick and hated it. I have a fragile stomach, I can just see myself locked in a toilet in some foreign land cursing the lack of nice toilet paper. But seriously, Japan, what’s with the one-ply wax paper you use in the toilet?

Anyway, it was suggested to take a mini-moon to Japan and Korea, which I think is the perfect thing for us. We can see family and friends who couldn’t make it and when Mr. GB is off this contract, we can take a spring tour in 2008 to somewhere more “vacation” for us. And really, I do miss Japan, it was just not a honeymoon location for me, so this is an excuse to go without wasting the title “honeymoon” on a trip there. :) After that, maybe we’ll take a world tour or something, as Mr. GB hasn’t been to any part of Europe and I need a good long stay in each country to satisfy my shopping and food consumption… and I always felt that Australia or New Zealand would be one of those countries I’d honeymoon in, but never visit otherwise.

Is anyone else postponing their honeymoon for a better time/weather/financial situation/anything?

People assume the same thing with us and expect us to have a Japanese honeymoon. We just tell them that we’ve seen everything there already.

We’re getting married at the end of next month, but one of my best friends is getting married in Israel in march. We’ll do the bulk of the honeymoonin’ in Israel and Turkey when we go!

Hi Miss GB! Same here - many have assumed that ours will be in Taiwan which we are going in November but mostly because our grandparents want us to do some Chinese ceremony stuff out there. We’re postponing our honeymoon until March (getting married next weekend) when I have my spring break from grad school.

if you are thinking of new zealand, it is good to go in oct/ nov, since it will be spring/summer over there! and it is beautiful! If you wait until our spring, new zealand will be fall/winter already…of course it will still be very beautiful, but i am not sure if you will like the cold!

Miss GB - since you are so familiar w/ Japan, I think it would be great if you could do a post/review for people who might be traveling there!! We(fi & i) would love to go one day, especially to shop and would greatly appreciate any pointers!

Miss Lollipop: what, no honeymoon mos burger for you? :D

Donna: yea, the stop in Korea would be to see my family who can’t make it. I doubt there would be any ceremony, but I haven’t seen a lot of them since I was 13! I think the time is right to cash in on some wedding presents and buy that new sofa. ;)

G: thanks for the advice, I really want to make a trip of it and have been begging Mr. GB for a while!

kp: I should poke Miss Lollipop about jointly doing this if people are interested. I’m sure we both have completely different experiences from being there. And I think I have seen a lot less of the interesting tourist sites since I spent a lot of time eating. No really, I mostly eat when I’m there. so tasty.

I agree with kp! My fiance and I REALLY want to go to Japan on our honeymoon. Plus we could visit my family that couldn’t make it to the US for the wedding. Any recommendations would be great!

I wouldn’t mind writing and entry recommending a few place in Japan. Just don’t ask me to write about Tokyo. I don’t think I’ve ever been a tourist there ’cause to me it is the magical land of shopping. I love going to the Tokyu Hands in Shibuya - less croweded than the one in Shinjuku - and pondering over markers for three hours.

Miss GB -

Don’t joke about MOS Burger! I miss their onion rings so much! Have they started making their yakiniku burger with beef instead of pork again?

That’s wonderful that you get to go to Japan so often! Mr Ant and I went there for our Honeymoon. We took a minimoon in St Lucia right after we got married in November. But we waited a few months before taking our official honeymoon because we wanted to enjoy Hanami in April. It was a wondrous (and delicious!) trip. :-)

If you want to do something right away for that authentic honeymoon feel, check into going on a cruise like we are going to do right after our wedding in October. Many places in the Caribbean will still have warm enough weather to do things like snorkeling and beach bumming ;) One of the things we are most looking forward to is swimming with dolphins in Cozumel! We are cruising out of Galveston so we can drive down from DFW, but even if you decided to fly out here to set sail from that port, it would be a cheaper plane ticket than Europe! Plus the best part - American food (though our ship also has a sushi place) that won’t upset your tummy. I’m a picky eater, so food is always an issue for me as well, and I know I’ll be gaining weight when I cruise!!

We are taking a mini-moon to Monterey immediately after our wedding (just a weekend), and are postponing our real honeymoon until April, when we will both have more time off. We are going to go to Vietnam for a few weeks, I cannot wait!!

OMG know the feeling. We are not taking a honeymoon right away and are living out of the country. Need to go back to visit relatives, but do NOT think of that as a good honeymoon/vacation!!

I’d also love to hear recommendations of places to see(and eat) in Japan! My Fiance and I really want to go to Japan for our honeymoon. He’s never been there and while I’ve been there twice I didn’t get to see much either time(first time was a 6-week homestay in Okinawa, second time was part of a college Japanese class in Fukuoka)

how about miami? you’ve been there. it’s nice around november… lots to do and eat, drive down to the keys and swim in the warm water. plus, when you go into stores, they will think you’re shoplifting and give you dirty looks! who doesn’t enjoy that on their honeymoon?

We are taking a minimoon (5 days in Newport, RI) and perhaps a week-long trip next spring or summer. It’s a challenge to plan around our travel schedules for work…
