Mrs. Tulip's Picture
Mrs. Tulip, DC Age and Occupation: 36, Retired Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Counsel/DOO for Small Gov't Contractor Engagement Date: August 8, 2007 Wedding Date: March, 2008 Venue: Still Looking! About Me: In all my dreams of the man I'd someday marry, I never pictured anyone as perfect for me as Mr. Tulip. So now we just have to make it through the craziness of the wedding and the moving in together! I love crafts, sewing, jewelry making, and photography, so am looking forward to this chance for DIY fun. When not wedding planning, I'm playing with our dog and 4 cats, Ebay shopping, or watching too much TV (often simultaneously!).
About Mrs. Tulip

Hellllloooooooo, Weddingbee World!

August 27th, 2007 @ 1:53 pm by Mrs. Tulip

My name is Tara, otherwise known as Miss Tulip, and I am so excited to be the latest Bee to join the Hive!  You might think of me as the Bargain Bee. I’ve been a bargain queen since childhood — always making a game of finding the nicest things possible for the smallest amount of cash.  There’s nothing as exciting to me as the thrill of the hunt … following the elusive trail of a fabulous item at an unheard-of price.  (Anyone can find something expensive and beautiful.  But to find something cheap and beautiful – that, my dears, takes skill!)  Now planning a wedding has kicked everything up a couple of notches.  But instead of hanging my trophies on some wall once I track them down … I plan to “hang” them here and share them with you!

Mr. Tulip and I have dated since I first moved to Washington, DC in 2004.  We are freakishly similar, to the point that we have been known to blurt out exactly the same words at exactly the same times.  Yes, we’re one of those couples….  We’re both something of the homebody, and a typical evening together will find us watching Netflix, side by side on the couch with our laptops open.  We’re both big blog followers, except that he reads news, politics, and things with actual content, while I like to look at pretty pictures on craft, design, and wedding blogs.  Mr. T. (hee hee) works from home, which means lots of flexibility to see one another.  And also lots of time with our adorable Sheltie puppy and 4 cats!

And when I’m not wedding planning?  (Is there such a thing?)  I’m at a strange time in life right now.  In the past, I’ve traveled the world – 1 year in Rotterdam (hence the Tulip – love them!), 2 years in Israel, a summer in Hong Kong – gotten a law degree, done big-time litigation in NYC, and been a government regulator….  But I’ve been fighting illness for a few years, and a year ago I gave up and retired on disability.  And now … I sit at home and play with the pets.  So both wedding planning and blogging have been something of a godsend in terms of finding new purpose.  In other words … thanks, Weddingbee readers!  I’m terribly glad to join you!

Thanks again for the big welcome, everybody! Awww, I feel so loved. :-D

Mar, sorry to disappoint re your birthday next year. We’re not moving in together till after the wedding, so we just can’t wait that long to start our lives together! Here’s the highly complicated method by which we decided on March for the wedding date: “Um … fall’s too soon and winter’s too cold … How about March?”

Welcome Miss Tulip! (Tulips are one of my faves.) I want to live your life, I am sooooo jealous of your experiences! Where did you go to law school? And did you travel before or after (or during) receiving your law degree? (Haha I’m more curious about your life than your wedding planning. It’s because I’m hoping to live a similar life, I promise! Not because I’m a stalker… =P)

O-kay, L…. As long as you promise there’s no stalking involved…. ;-)

I always wanted to travel before college, but I would have lost my scholarships and my parents were afraid I wouldn’t make it back to school. (Totally baseless, but you know parents.) So as soon as college was over, I worked out a room & board position with a school in Holland, and off I went! Law school was supposed to start next, but the travel bug wasn’t quite over, so I negotiated a 2-year deferment and moved to Israel. And I would totally recommend the time off to anyone considering it — it really did work out my wanderlust and make me ready to settle down to school and career.

From there I went to Duke Law, which I also recommend. Much more relaxed than most of the other top schools. And I was in an international program, which meant a summer in Hong Kong. Greatest place ever — it was so much fun!

Miss Peony asked yesterday about people’s life plans: I decided early on that age 26 would be the perfect age to get married. Well, I’m now 10 years behind that! But I really don’t regret a thing, as I was able to adventure a bit and establish my career (which involved several moves — school, clerking, firm, government) without compromising for a husband’s interests. Now I’m comfortable with where things are in my own life and can treat couple-dom as the next/i> big adventure!

I am so late to board the Mrs. Tulip amazing train, but I just read over from most recent to most archived, and I am so glad to have done so; I’m about 2 months out from my wedding and your inspirational, beautiful event will keep me grounded in these next crucial weeks. Thank you so much!!

@krissycake: That’s so terribly sweet of you! It’s sad having no reason to blog for Weddingbee anymore — I miss all the wonderful comments from readers and the strong sense of community.

Good luck with your own wedding. I’m sure it will be fabulous!!
