This Is Not A Pretty Post

August 27th, 2007 @ 1:05 pm by Mrs. Petunia

I used to think I was blessed with good skin. I never even had any acne problems as a teenager: lucky me. I do remember, though, as a young kid, watching my mother spend ridiculous amounts of money on skin products and vast amounts of time applying them. I think now I know why.

As an adult, I have been “cursed” with several skin issues, including eczema/mild dermatitis around my chin and neck, some rosacea on my face and now even broken capillaries/veins known as telangiectasia (all respectively pictured below, though on other people and to varying degrees, and all equivalently GROSS).

I’m currently using at least three prescribed products: Metrogel, Finacea and Desonate, plus I’ve had one laser treatment to try to “erase” the veins around my mouth and nose, and other smaller ones on my chest and arms. I’ve had mostly success with the ones on my face, though the ones on my arm are still pretty noticeable. I’m not sure if I should go back and have it done again…

I hate all of it and think often that the stuff isn’t working: it’s so frustrating! To make matters worse, I have a pretty yellow complexion which might look better with a tan — except tanning/sun exposure is part of the cause of the telangiectasia.

I think it stinks that I’m only in my early 30s and my skin is already the pitts and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the makeup artist on the day of our wedding can do wonders with evening out my skin.

Anyone else having crazy adult skin problems? Has wedding stress made them worse? What, if anything, has helped??

i can totally relate! i get more breakouts now than i did when i was 15… and wedding stress is NOT helping. i plan on getting a facial about a month before and i hope that will help.

good luck! a great makeup artist can cover anything, and really, you’ll be all aglow from happiness so don’t let it worry you. you’ll be beautiful.

I am getting monthly facials leading up to my wedding, and my makeup artist is using airbrush makeup. That stuff is light but covers everything so well.

I’ve dealt with acne my whole life - from age 12 to 26. Thankfully, at this moment (crosses my fingers…wedding is four weeks away) I have no active breakouts…just scars that I’m desperately hoping to lighten before the wedding.

For me, it’s just been a combination of being back on hormonal birth control, washing my face twice a day with proactiv cleanser (can only do that in the summer…any other time of year that sort of routine would dry my face out), drinking lots of water and limiting dairy products. I’ll probably just step it up as I get closer to the big day.

OMG! Thank you for posting this, I am not alone! LOL, within this last year I have also just begun using metrogel for my newly diagnosed rosacea - I’m only 22! Apparently this NEVER goes away - why me?!?! Apparently it can be genetic (and I guess I do see a little bit on my Dad) but the doc believes that it is mainly come to light becuase of a nasty sunburn I had about a year ago - wear your sunblock ladies!!! It was my first summer in Victoria BC and I underestimated the sun - I was cold temperature wise, then I was burned to a crisp on my face within an hour.

I hope it gets better by next June, otherwise I guess makeup will have to do the drink. However, if it doesn’t significantly improve by Oct/Nov I’m going to request to try the antibiotics that can often work…Good luck Miss P!

I’m in the same boat. Never had acne until I turned 21. What is the deal with that?
Went to a dermatologist, and he keep prescribing medicine I was allergic too which made it even worse. Got rashes all over my hands and my nose would turn 80 shades of red. I gave up on him and bought the clinique acne set and it has been working AMAZINGLY. I feel like a salesperson, but I literally have tried every acne product known to man. I was browsing on sephora one day and started to experiment and its been doing the trick! Hopefully it keeps the acne at bay until the wedding!
Good luck, and I agree with aura lee, makeup covers all, you will be beautiful and radiant with happiness no matter what!

Heheheehe, (scratching the eczema on her leg) yes, I know how this is. Finally my chest-region hives are going, but it won’t fix my messed up scarred arms and legs. :( It totally sucks, right?

I also have the broken capillaries on my face, and it’s not pretty. How did those lasers work? Were they painful?

I have what I think is a cyst on my cheek. Basically a really deep pocket that fills up over and over that I’lll probably have to have cut out. Best part is that when I finally got in to see the dermatologist, it was looking pretty good and she told me to come back when it gets bad again. Thank you for that $35 diagnosis!

I have mild issues with acne - have all my life. I’ve tried most prescription medications etc creams, name it my doctor has probably prescribed it at some point or another. The only thing that has somewhat helped is birth control pills.. haha.. It makes it a little more manageable and my breakouts are easier to cover up.

The best my skin ever looked was on holiday in Disneyland… I think I might move to California.

One product I do recommend (especially for rosacea) is Cover FX (http://www.coverfx.com/). I used to work in a drug store that carried the line and have seen (and participated in) demos that were incredible. It is -very- heavy though. So if you don’t like wearing makeup I don’t recommend it - but it does last quite some time. It’s often used by people with scarring as it’s the best at covering it up.

ugh, me too! perfect skin and now, just before the wedding, my skin has been getting little red bumps and who knows what else. My friend has recommended just a basic skin care since I didn’t use anything other than soap and water before and I guess it works? let me know what works for you, since I’m clueless!

I never had a problem with acne as a teenager, I turned 21(am now 24) and have been dealing with it ever since. I have lately been using a tea tree oil soap with a benzoyl peroxide prescription from the Dr. and it is clearing up a bit. They aren’t big red pimples they are the small ones.

Yes I am currently VERY frustrated with my skin. I’ve been on prescription antibiotics and topical creams for 4-5 years now and it really has not been cured yet. Not one facewash works (I think I have 3 in my bathroom right now). I think my face gets used to it, and then stagnates, so I have to switch it up.

Recently I’ve been getting the most pimples between my nose and my lips, which is super annoying.

I’m glad I’m not the only one battling with skin issues. I thought (at 24) i’d have grown out of them by now!

it’s funny–my skin was *wonderful* before my wedding, but it’s so awful now I made my first dermatologist appt in years today. I’m on hormonal BC, which cleared up most of my adult acne. I’ve had acne since I was 12, which is waaay too long. However, it was all mostly gone as I had worked so hard, and then my wedding makeup artist told me I had wonderful skin, but it was too dry and foundation wasn’t going to look good. Which I found odd, as I’ve spent all the years since I was about 12 trying to dry my skin out–my skin is really oily. Well, she pushed the “your skin overproduces oil because you dry it too much” thing. So, I did what she asked: drank gallons of water, used an eye cream and a very light oil-controlling moisturizer. And, I have to say, my skin looked amazing on my wedding day. Wish it looked like that now! We’ll see what the doctor says…

Yes - I have more acne now that I ever have in my life! WTF!! I’m assuming all stress related…

Miss Kiwi:

The laser “stung” but didn’t “hurt” per se. I have to say though that one session was only enough for some of them. I still have others, and I think it also depends how thick the skin around the area is. It definitely worked to some extent though — at least all are minimized.

I’ll keep on using what I have and see if it gets better. I think the Desonate has helped for the eczema, but it doesn’t help that I always seem to rest my hand on my face/chin when in front of the computer — it gets better and then I make it worse!

Hami: yes! Genes and the darn sun are to blame and I rarely even tan! Seems a little is too much for me period!

I’ll keep you ladies posted if things get better!

I still have acne problems and very oily skin, even though I’m 27. I have been using a wonderful product by Estee Lauder called Clear Difference Oil Control Hydrator. It dries up the oil, but feels like a moisturizer and doesn’t dry out your skin. It has really cut down on the acne.

I feel your pain, too! Never had skin problems in high school — probably never used moisturizer and didn’t even know how to put concealer or foundation on because I never needed it, and then in college I broke out terribly with what I learned was rosocea. It took about 2-3 years to finally get it under control.

I am now on Orthotricyclen (the pill, but I swear it was the one thing that finally calmed my skin down), I use Clenia facewash twice a day (have seen a huge improvement since I’ve been using this for about 2 years), and I use Finacea at night only. The Finacea dries my skin out a lot, but I have also seen a decrease in breakouts since I’ve started using this.

I think I finally have a good routine, but it took so many trials and errors to get it right. Metrogel didn’t work for me, some oral pills made me nauseous, and other topical treatments made it worse or WAY too dry. You really do have to try different things and be patient while your skin adapts and tells you if it’s working or not, before you try the next thing. It’s frustrating.

One thing i can suggest, while not a Fix is more of a ima-look-great-on-my-wedding-day-fix. :)

Airbrushed Makeup. A.Maz.Ing. Miss. P, if you want a REALLY amazing makeup artist in Ft Lauderdale, hit Cosmix on Oakland and see Rochelle. She’s seriously the best in the area (i’ve been in skin care for 6 years, and seen plenty of makeup artists, she’s seriously great)

The best part about airbrushing is she can completely custom blend what you need and cover ANYTHING (even tattoos!) Something to consider for your big day!

I know it’ll sound weird, but this post was kind of comforting to me as I face similarly frustrating skin issues. I’ve always had minor breakouts but coupled with rosecea, it has been much worse.
I went to the dermatologist for a couple of years when I was younger and spent a lot of time having needles stuck into my face and being prescribed topical cremes which burned my sensitive skin, but for now, I seem to have found a couple of things that work.
1) Face Doctor Soap - Helps remove the dead skin from breakouts and reduces the redness (http://www.nextag.com/face-doctor-soap/search-html)
2) Clinique CX Redness Relief Creme - Soothes the skin’s surface and helps with blotchiness (http://www.clinique.com/templates/products/sp_nonshaded.tmpl?ngextredir=1&CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY4915&PRODUCT_ID=PROD6017)
Good luck with your skin issues! Hopefully you will find something that works for you. :)

I have several broken blood vessels under my eyes and discoloration from years of acne.
I took a chance and purchased Bare Minerals at Ulta. The powder covers the blood vessels and it evens out my skin tone.

I don’t think I would use any other kind of make-up.

Good luck!

I also have the broken blood vessel/mild (MILD) rosacea issue. My derm said many women react this way to oral birth control (which I can’t exactly stop!). I’ve had a few laser treatments to minimize some of the bad, most visible veins. My FI thinks I’m imagining things but they are definitely there. I think the best thing is the laser treatments, but I also have a sunscreen made by Johnson & Johnson that reduces redness, and I think it’s not bad. You might want to give it a try.
