To Dream The Impossible Dream

August 27th, 2007 @ 1:28 pm by Mrs. Corn

As it has been noted MANY times on the bee, it is next-to impossible to find a decent Mother of the Bride dress out there these days. The options seem to be:

- Boring beige (albeit with sparkles) MOB dress ordered from a bridal store. To be honest, this dress comes in a rainbow of colors, but it is still prohibitively expensive which is worse when you realize it will only get one wearing.

 - Love Boat hooker-wear

- The same dress every MOB wears because they can’t find anything else that isn’t the first two options above

Many, many people have suggested looking at Nordstrom’s. In fact, I think the first time I heard this suggestion was on the bee back in early February when I first happened upon the site. I went on the Nordstrom’s site and indeed, there were many, many dresses to choose from, which I thought was great.

Ok. Have you BEEN to a Nordstrom’s to look for a MOB dress? I can tell you now, there’s nothing. My shower was in mid-May in Philadelphia and the plan was to go to the Nordstrom’s at the King of Prussia mall after the shower. The thought was that since it is a flagship store, we would have even more of a selection to choose from. No. such. luck.

When we got inside, we asked someone where the special occasion dresses were…we giddily explained we were looking for a MOB dress. The woman pointed to an area of the store not far from where we entered. From where we were standing we could only see an orange be-spangled slinky dress with a slit to there and a V to the other there with a gaudy brooch to nestle between the breasts. Surely there must be something else, we thought, so we turned the corner expecting to see the wealth of options that were online. Again, no. such. luck. There was nothing. There were exact replicas of the orange dress in aqua and a few cocktail dresses, but that was it.

We found another sales associate and explained that we were looking for MOB dresses and asked if she could point us in the right direction and she said, rather defensively, that these were all they had. At this point I almost throttled the woman. Instead, I calmly explained that we were looking for something a bit less hooch. I may have gone a bit bridezilla by continuing on to point out that it was the start of wedding season and I couldn’t possibly be the only person with a mother who wasn’t a size 2 looking for a decent dress to wear for a wedding. The sales associate just started backing away from me like she was scared I might grow another head.

With no other options, we discouragedly headed out of the store. On our way out, the first sales lady we had seen asked us if we had found anything and I explained to her that the only thing that was there wasn’t very MOB appropriate. She looked at us semi-empathetically and said, ‘I know, as soon as anything comes in it goes right out the door’. Are you kidding me?? The demand is that great and Nordstrom’s can’t figure out to stock more? Grrrrr…

We looked at many other stores too; Macy’s, JC Penney, Boscov’s, Bon Ton, Catherine’s, Lord and Taylor; you name it, we have been there to look for a MOB dress. They all have the same three dresses. My mom wanted something special, not something she knew would show up as the MOB dress of 2007 in every bride’s wedding album.

Obviously, I am not the first bride with this issue; it has been documented so many times by so many brides just on this site alone. So what is the deal? The demand is clearly out there…where is the supply?

With two weeks left until the wedding, I don’t have time to leave you all hanging. We did eventually find a gorgeous outfit that my mom loves and that will coincidentally go with the whole feel of our wedding. We finally found it in a store called W.O.W. (Women of Worth) here in the Boston area. The outfit is silk and the top is hand dyed. It was expensive, but it is made of pieces that my mom can, and will, wear again. I am posting it here for two reasons. One, because my mom looks beautiful, comfortable and happy. Secondly, because I think it is important to see that there are other options out there if you search hard enough.

Happy hunting. And if anyone wants to open up a MOB shop with me, let me know.

My mom had difficulty too. She wanted to wait so she could lose weight, which meant anything that had to be specially ordered months before the wedding was out. But I had a daytime wedding, so you might think it wouldn’t be that difficult, right? You’d be wrong. She had similar issues. She went to our local Nordstrom, a store I otherwise like and encouraged her to try, and they had nothing. Nor did Bloomingdales or Saks. She did find two very nice dresses though, at Macy’s, surprisingly enough. She looked wonderful and age appropriate (my mom was not about to wear a hootchie dress) and didn’t wear a little jacket, either!

Ugh! I feel your pain! When I go back to Ottawa to visit my Mom in September we have exactly a day and a half to find her a MOB dress - otherwise, I don’t know what we’ll do! LOL

Your Mom’s dresses look beautiful - perfect choices AND I love the colours!

Your mom looks great! I really like the necklace she’s wearing with the blue outfit.

We’re venturing into Diane Keaton territory for a MoB outfit (my mom was an Annie Hall girl back in the day.) Crisp white shirt, high waist skirt, and a gorgeous chunky-boho necklace of her own design. I love my mama - she’s so eclectic, cool, and classy. :)

My sister is getting married and in our culture, there are lots of seamstresses and we always get her dresses made that way. Maybe to get stylish outfits you can go that route? Ahh but you only have a couple of weeks left…

My mom and I liked the selection at the Nordstrom on Michigan Ave in Chicago. They had not one but three MOB-worthy options that looked fantastic on my mom. Maybe the selection varies greatly by store?

My mom didn’t want to go through any of that and decided on making her own (as well as making my dress). (see her progress here: http://couturesmith.blogspot.com/)

I’m with you on the whole Nordstrom thing! We saw the “hooker wear” (hehe, you’re so cute!) and asked the sales associate if there was anything else more MOB appropriate. She was actually very nice and responded “I was just the MOB in my oldest daughter’s wedding! I got my dress in Vegas of all places!” Umm…thank you, we’ll be leaving now…

I’ll open a store with you! I mean does every dress designer think that MOB’s are either a) a size 0 and can wear dresses almost identical tot hat of the bride; or b) boring and don’t wish to look good for the daughter’s big day. I mean seriously how hard can it be to find a dress for my momma?

I believe that Nordstroms will let you order things online and then return them at the store - so there really is very little to be lost by ordering your top 2-3 dresses in your most likely sizes (i.e. I would order a 10 and a 12) and then returning the ones that don’t fit, as long as you have a local Nordstroms and aren’t a big procrastinator.
There are also good catalogs with nice MOB options - for example, Chadwicks, and Newport News are both directed at slightly older (MOB aged) women and a lot of the options come with coordinating jackets, wraps, or already have sleeves (which many MOBs like). They also sell things in Women’s and Petite sizes.
And there is something to be said for getting a dress custom made - choice of fabric, choice of design, getting a dress that fits her in a style she likes, and possibly something she will wear again. Chances are, for most of us, our moms don’t treat themselves that often and deserve to look their absolute best, and getting a custom dress might not cost as much as you think, or at least not much more then any of those hideous MOB numbers they sell at bridal shops.
(Actually, we made my mom try on some of the things in the bridesmaids dress section of David’s, and the some of the separates outfits looked pretty good, so that might be another option.)

I agree, the majority of MOB dresses are hideous. My FMIL got hers at Nordstrom’s thou, and I bought my Mom’s off JCPenney’s website (she lives in anotehr state).. She got it and says she loves it. So I will see how it looks on her once she gets here in September, I guess :)

way to go Miss Corn and just in time! with 4 weeks to go, my mum and my FMIL are still without outfits. I mean really, it’s been harder than finding my wedding gown. You can bet your booty all three of us will be heading to the city this weekend! thank you thank you thank you.

Yikes - I certainly hope your comment is either regarding what a ’scary’ proposition it is to find a MOB dress these days or how ’scary’ it would be if my head did spin off and not anything else.

Respectfully,

Miss Corn
