About Mrs. Eggplant

A First For Everything

August 28th, 2007 @ 5:24 pm by Mrs. Eggplant

My wedding officiant/pastor has never officiated a wedding before.

Yup, it’s true! And I couldn’t be more thrilled. smiley1064

Originally, Mr. Eggplant and I asked the lead pastor at our church to officiate our wedding. He was already scheduled for another wedding on the same day as our nuptials, and coincidentally, in the same city also. The plan was to start our ceremony in the late afternoon and have our pastor wedding hop once he was done marrying the first couple. Well, there are so many uncontrollable variables involved in timing a wedding, that I didn’t feel great about our original plan. So a little over two months left until our big day, Mr. Eggplant and I decided to switch officiants.

Our new officiant (I’ll call him Pastor A) is also a pastor at our current church. He’s newly married and just celebrated his one year anniversary recently. Our wedding will be the first nuptials that he’ll be overseeing, and I’m totally fine with it. I actually wanted to be the first wedding that he officiated. Call me selfish, but I like the thought of our wedding being just a little bit special to someone other than me and Mr. Eggplant. Plus, since this is Pastor A’s first official wedding, he has been able to spend a generous amount of time preparing with us, going over pre-marital counseling, and giving us a realistic view of what our first year of marriage will be like. As it turns out, Pastor A and his wife are quite similar to Mr. Eggplant and me! Our age gap is the same: Pastor A is younger than Mrs. A (and younger than me, I think). Similarly, our personalities are parallel: Mr. Eggplant and Pastor A are both extroverts while I’m shy as pie and Mrs. A is also reserved.

I’m quite excited to have Pastor A marrying us this October. I think he’ll do a great job and I already see us all being friends for life.

Funny thing, I met Mrs. Tomato during our first meeting with Pastor A! She happened to be dining at the same restaurant and came up to say hello. It turns out that we go to the same church. smiley1064 What a coincidence, no? Looks like we’ll be seeing each other around, Mr. & Mrs. Tomato!

Have you taken a chance on a “green” vendor/officiant/company for your wedding? How did it turn out?

we’re actually going to have our friend officiate our wedding. he’s going to apply to be an officiant for the day. i live in boston, so you have to get permission from the governor by sending an application, letters of reference, and $25.

Our wedding will be the second ceremony our officiant has performed. His first wedding was only a few weeks ago, which we’ve only heard rave reviews from guests! We’re extremely excited because we are friends with our officiant and think it will increase the personalization of our wedding.
Also, our photographer and videographers are good friends and skilled artists but not particularly “wedding” vendors. Which we love!

Nope, I haven’t found anyone who’s a newbie as a vendor for our wedding, though I would be willing to give someone a shot if I trusted in their abilities and they put me at ease when we got to know them.

I always wonder how people break through this lack of experience, as I want to become a wedding planner but only have my own wedding planning for experience! Anyone in Vancouver need a wedding planner, I’ll give ya a good discount ;)

Our wedding was the first wedding for our pastor too. He’s a close friend of ours who’s a youth pastor at a local church. He and his wife had only been married for 1.5 years (and I coordinated their wedding!) It was so wonderful to have someone young and really excited about officiating. He needed a little bit more support and guidance for us..and we did need someone else to help “stage” the ceremony (direct us where/how to stand, etc. since he really didn’t know.) For us, it was also nice to have a close friend officiating.

Our wedding was the first for our pastor too! He’s been a youth pastor for about 7 years or so at our church. So me and my husband were the first to meet in his youth group, date and actually get married. So it was pretty special having him officiate since he was there from the beginning. and he was discipling my husband at the time! So he knew everything that was going on when we first started dating. He did great so everything worked out well!

Ours was the first for our deacon. He was nervous, and his homily was definitely “interesting” … but it all worked out fine… plus he had a fun accent.
