About Mrs. Kiwi

Ring of Ink

August 28th, 2007 @ 6:36 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

For those of you who have husbands and fiances (and boyfriends!), have they expressed discomfort about wearing a wedding band?

Mr. Kiwi works with sports equipment all day, every day. He knows a few people who have their wedding bands on a chain around their neck, or some don’t even bother to wear the band at all due to discomfort. Luckily, to my relief, Mr. Kiwi doesn’t want to be one of the guys who doesn’t wear his wedding ring. We both know it will take some getting used to (as his wedding band width is 8mm), but hopefully it’s something that won’t be too hard to deal with.

Recently I have read about some guys who want to tattoo wedding bands on their ring fingers instead of wearing an actual band. Didn’t Tommy Lee do this when he married Pam Anderson? whateva023 Anyway, what do you think of that? If your significant other would rather tattoo a wedding band on, would you object?

I’m not a fan of the tattoo-as-wedding-band phenomenon, but at least then he can’t take it off and pretend to be single out at the bars ;-) (Although, on second thought, I wouldn’t think about marrying a guy who would try to do that anyway!)

A friend of mine married a pro athlete who got a tattoo wedding band, and this really worked out well for him.

Mr. Petunia is actually excited about getting his and wearing it, but he has already let me know that when he’s working on airplane mechanics/electronic stuff again after he’s done with school, he is bound to take it off. It doesn’t bother me though =)

I would support it if my man wanted a tattoo wedding band- it shows he’s in it forever, he’s unique, and it would save me a heck of a lot of money. (hey, even man bands are pricey!)

My fiance is a professional magician who does close-up magic, where he’s really working with his hands. Often he lights stuff on fire and his ring could get damaged. So he’s going to wear a ring on his finger, but for performances he’ll wear it on a chain around his neck.

I would definitely not be on board with a tattooed wedding ring. Tacky.

My cousin had a tattoo put around her ring finger for a former boyfriend. It’s been 10 years now and it’s almost completely faded - I guess fingers plus light ink doesn’t work very well. I’d be fine with my husband tattooing a ring on as long as it was simple and not cheesy.

my husband has a motorcycle business, and as well, he is a road racer, so a ring isn’t practical. but i got him the ring he wanted and 3 weeks after the wedding he got the tattoo. it has worked well…especially after the unanticipated hand injury and surgery this year (two months after the wedding)! he wears the real ring when we vacation :-)

My fiance was actually excited to pick out his ring. Weird.

My Brother in law has my sister’s initials in script around his ring finger. He and my sister went together, and she actually was the one to make the first mark of the tattoo. He works on Harleys for a living, and can not wear a ring at the shop. He wears it everywhere else, though- and my sister is always there in spirit (and tattoo) when he can’t.

I’ve mentioned the idea to my FI, who has to take his ring off when he works sometimes for safety reasons. It’s really important to me that he wear a ring, so maybe both?

i know lots of guys who’ve tattooed their wife’s name around their ring finger. it suits them. maybe that has something to do with them all being in the music industry though…

i personally don’t like tats, but if my husband wanted it, i probably wouldn’t stop him.

my fiance wants to wear his prematurely! haha. he sneaks it on every once in a while and says, guess what i’m wearing? haha. but it is a tad bit loose (not enough to shake off) and also a bit heavy (so perhaps we should have gone with gold instead). anyways, he loves it! and i love it too. can’t wait to wear ours!!! we are definitely taking it off when we go to work or need to use our hands more. :P

I’ve honestly tossed around the idea of getting one tattooed on myself. I have a slight hand defect in that my ring and middle fingers on my left hand are webbed up to the first knuckle, so I physically cannot wear a ring on the traditional finger. I just wear my ring (rings in ONE month-yay!) on my right hand, but boy does it get old explaining why I wear my ring on my right hand. I probably never will, but it’s fun to think about :D

My fiance is concerned about wearing his because he doesn’t ever wear any jewelry and he’s afraid it will bug him, but ever since we actually got them he keeps begging to wear it before the wedding. So cute!

I have close friend who is a chemist, she cannot wear rings when in the lab due to chemical reactions and the possibility of agents getting under the band and burning her (even though they mostly wear gloves). Since she has to be all day without her band she got a tattoo that is under her band. Regularly you can’t see the tattoo but when she has to remove her ring in the lab you can.

There’s a guy at work whose [second] wife made him get a ring tattoo. For an explanation, see comment #1.

I think it’s sweet. My fiance’s brother did that as he’s a mechanic and can’t wear jewelry to work. It might get stuck in the machinery, and then you get a smooshed finger. Ew.

My fiance’s mentioned perhaps doing it as well since we works in the shop at work sometimes. But he’s already got a ton of tattoos, which I obviously don’t mind : )

I think rings are optional anyway, and that each couple needs to decide what’s right for them. My parents didn’t wear rings until their 25th anniversary, and they’re certainly not alone in that practice.

If you aren’t really a tattoo person or a ring person, I don’t think you should be vilified for not wanting to have either.

My FI is a welder and wouldn’t be able to wear his actual wedding band to work. He already has a lotttttttt of tattoos and so the tattoo ring he wants really suits him and his personality. Besides, its for life and so is a tattoo. I really want him to get a real band for like special occasions and the ceremony though. :)

I love the tattoo ring idea. Yes, Tommy Lee and Pam Anderson did this. I plan on getting it done as well… just to wear under my beautiful rings, of course!! It’s not tough for me though… I love the small yet highly symbolic tiny ink treasures I have on my body right now. I have an inked toe ring, and it looks awesome… a finger would look twice as good, just get it very small and not too intricate b/c it will blur together eventually. I would make it a series of numbers and letters, like your initials or monogram and the wedding date so for me it would look something like this ~eCm~ 10.18.08 — wrapped around of course. :-) Hope this helps!
