About Beehive

Beehive

August 29th, 2007 @ 4:13 pm by Beehive

We’ll be changing the way the beehive works in the coming days, so please take advantage of our new boards! :)

In today’s hive:

  1. Heidi wants to know if there has been any talk on choosing the perfect wedding ring?  She’s considering these titanium rings.
  2. Mary is looking for flowers that have exactly 6 petals.  Any recommendations, names, or pics?
  3. Joan asks - for those in New York who got a charter for their guests to the venue, how did you arrange for the pickup site?  She can’t find anything on the web re: how to get permission for a pickup in Manhattan.
  4. Annie wants to know if anyone in the Northern NJ/NYC area would be willing to send her a list of reception venues that are less than $150 pp for a Saturday evening.  She’s in Maryland and it’s difficult to navigate through all the flash-heavy sites.
  5. shaz wants to know where to purchase cheap rhinestone buckles for invitations.
  6. Nhi wants to know if you have placecards for every person or one per couple/family?  And how do you indicate an entree on them without overwhelming your placecard, or indicating it so small the waitstaff have a hard time identifying it, esp if they do 1 card per couple/family?

Heidi, my fiance’s engagement ring and wedding band are both titanium and he loves it! We have another friend who went with titanium bands, even though they’re not as shiny - they’re definitely more durable!

Heidi, we have titanium wedding rings from Bruce Boone (boonerings.com) and I cannot say enough wonderful things about them, and him. The rings (tri gold mokume gane inlay) are beautiful and they got to us really FAST. We ordered on a Sunday night and they were at the office by Thursday. I went with a polished finish at is it VERY shiny.

QUESTION for the beehive! Would love to hear the “truth” about guestbooks from married Bees and readers: how often do you look at it? Did you do a traditional guestbook or something else like a wish jar or photo guestbook? Do guests overlook/pass on a wish jar *more* than they do a traditional book? Any sense of just how much energy I should put into this part of the wedding? I can think of several weddings I’ve been to where I never even noticed if there *was* a guestbook! Thanks you for your input!!

annie - go to a barnes and nobles in the tri-state (NJ/NY) area; in the magazines section there’s a “locations” magazine and a couple on “reception ideas” - each page has a different venue and it will list the price / type of food / max capacity - good luck!

Annie,

I did my reception at The Newark Club. It’s very modern, it’s located in the 22nd floor of a high rise building and the view is spectacular. Also located just one block away from the Hilton and the train station. Most people were surprised with our reception location (It’s a gem that nobody knows about). For 2007, the fee for Saturday night was about $150 or slightly more. The food is great too. It has no pretty gardens but the banquet hall is amazing.
http://www.newarkclub.com, although you should go take a look yourself. Good luck!

PS The Manor has good prices too, with a nice garden but the banquet hall is a bit old fashion for me.

Heidi: try palladium as an option also! :-) my jeweler told me that it’s the metal most similar in structure to platinum. but it’s much lighter and about the same price as white gold.

Nhi, if you’re using place cards that indicate each person’s seat location on their table, you would need one per person. these can be color coded (pink card for beef, white for chicken, etc) with paper or ribbon or jewel… escort cards, on the other hand, indicate what table you belong to. on these, you can certainly indicate mr. & mrs. last name because they’re likely to sit at the same table. but i wouldn’t put their meal choices on them. if you have the escort seating cards one per person, you can forego the place cards at the table and just put their meal choices on the escort cards. hope that helps!

A question, please! Is it poor ettiquette to NOT send a save the date/invitation after you’ve asked the guest for their address? Reason is, my mother has added a ton of people to the guest list (argh) and to accommodate these add’l people we are thinking about reducing our other acquaintances. These acquaintances are people who were kind of borderline on the guest list…

Mary,
As far as I know, there are almost no flowers that organically have 6 petals. Most will have 3, 5 or 8 per the Fibonacci sequence.

Here’s one website that may help.
http://ghs.gresham.k12.or.us/science/ps/nature/gorge/3petal/3.htm

Maybe lilies….
Or you can make your own paper flower bouquets in any which way you choose.

It’s less than three weeks until my wedding and I may not have a dress…. I bought a used dress and had it cleaned for my wedding. I decided to have it cleaned so it would be nice and white. However, I was supposed to pick it up over a week ago yet the cleaner doesn’t have it. Apparently, they sent it out to be cleaned elsewhere and it hasn’t returned. They are working feverishly to find my dress but with less than 3 weeks until my wedding day I’m a little apprehensive.

Should I start looking for another dress?
Is there enough time to get another dress for my wedding?
Any advice?

Nhi,

For my recent wedding, we just had escort cards rather than place cards. We didn’t assign people a particular seat but did assign them to a table. So we had a large table at the front with one escort card per couple - it had the couple’s names on it, their table number, and stamps to show who got what meal - a cute little pea pod stamp for the vegetarian meal, a little chicken for the chicken dinner, and a little heart for a child’s meal. (If the child was old enough that I thought they’d enjoy it, I usually made a separate place card for them.

Heidi, I second Miss Eggplant’s the suggestion to consider palladium - both of our engagement rings are made of it, and it is wonderful. I actually blogged about palladium yesterday if you want some more information.

Mary - you can do a google image search for “six petals” (in quotes) and get about a thousand hits. A lot of them are porcelain bowls, of course, but there are a lot of flowers mixed in there. I think my favorite is a flowering bluegrass, here:

Mary - here’s more…

…including a list: snowdrop, tulip, gladiolus, iris, lily.

Nhi-
We had a buffet for dinner (so no concern over indicating which entree), and only used escort cards… so we did a combined card for married couples. (Separate cards for unmarried friends that brought their significant other as they have different last names).

Shaz - I bought mine from http://www.lucysfabrics.com. They have good prices and if you order in large bulk (I ordered 300), they give you an even larger discount.

Annie, I just got married a few months ago and I’m in the Northern NJ area. I have an excel spreadsheet of most of the North-NJ reception hall sites along with their contact info. If you want, you can have a copy of the list. Please e-mail me at heyjanety@gmail.com. Good Luck!!

Has anyone seen any cute 26 stamps for RSVP postcards? I’ve only seen the USPS cougar stamps that look slightly ominous to me. And I don’t want to purchase 5 or so vintage stamps for each card just to make it unique….but I don’t want to have a cougar on my pink/cream RSVPs either! Anyone?

Shaz - I ordered rhinestone buckles from Joyce Trimmings in New York: http://www.ejoyce.com Look under buckles.

Annie!

you should buy the magazine “locations” for NY/NJ and flip throuhg it. there is pricing inside (but might not be up to date) and you can also check out their websites!

Nhi, we had an escort card for every person (the vegetarian menu choice was indicated by a small ‘v’ in the upper right corner). As we let people choose their own seats at their assigned tables, we had a little sign asking people to bring their card to their place to aid the servers.

Nhi,

Placecards should be one for each guest. You could put a symbol on each card (such as a type of flower, butterfly, etc…to match your theme.) If there are not too many entree choices, you could specify that a butterfly means fish, rose means beef, etc…

You could also do different color text/ writing for the guests names…each color symbolizing a meal choice. Or if you want to get fancy…you could add different color ribbons.

Using a separater card for each guest would make it much easier for the wait staff as well.

yibba - we did wish cards instead of a guest book. i truly think more people wrote much more than if it would have been a traditional guest book. plus, not a single person JUST signed their name. and everyone loved the idea of leaving wishes and advice for us!
not much energy was involved. i bought precut cards from paper-source, asked a florist to provide a vase, wrote a little explanation poem & provided pens. that’s it!

Shaz, for buckles try http://www.almost.com.au. They’re based in Australia/Hong Kong, so I don’t know what they’re shipping policies are, but they’re cheap!
