Flower My Cake?

August 29th, 2007 @ 4:21 pm by Mrs. Eggplant

Flower My Cake? : wedding cake san francisco Z92962803 cakery6
Sylvia Weinstock Cakes taken from a photo in Elegant Bride

I am soliciting all of your flower expertise! Can anyone tell me what type of flowers are similar to the ones pictured in the cake photo?

Next week I will be dropping off a copy of my desired cake design to my baker along with silk flowers to decorate the confection. Since the flowers in Sylvia Weinstock’s cake pictured above are made of sugar, I can’t seem to find similar ones made of silk. Any suggestions? I’m hoping to find some that are rather large (5″ in diameter or so).

Thanks so much!

Wow, that cake is stunning… it looks kinda like ranunculous to me, but I’m not positive.

I think they’re roses with hydrangeas.

Ranunculous, mini-rose buds with hydrangeas?

They do kind of look like ranunculous, but they seem a little bit like english roses

I think they’re roses, but more like the garden kind than your usual store bought. Google “garden rose” and look at the images page– I think that’s what it is.

Ranunculous’ have that look that someone cut them flat and the darker part in the middle– like an eyeball staring back at you (sorry they freak me out!) :-)

Well, perhaps the amazing Sylvia Weinstock made a hybrid of a rose/ranunculous!

Too big to be ranunculous. These are garden roses ( google Rosalind, miranda, juliet roses), mini rose buds and hydrangeas.

i don’t think they’re ranunculus.. i think they’re roses too, but maybe they created a sugar hybrid of the two!

Definitely garden roses. Pretty!! Would you be up for attempting to make the sugar flowers yourself? I did some in gumpaste before my MIL said we should do live flowers, and it was a little time consuming but not too bad at all, esp. if you can’t find the silk flowers exactly like what you are looking for. It’s a little like grainy, edible sculpey. :)

I would say that they are either roses or ranunculous…

Mrs. Plumeria: I’m taking the whole week off before the wedding, so I’m definitely open to making the flowers. Are they delicate? Can I make them a few days before?

I’d love to read some tips and resources!

Miss Eggplant: I was thinking about doing my own as well using instructions on this site http://www.baking911.com/decorating/cakes_gumpaste.htm I picked up a pasta machine at a yard sale for $5 so I can easily roll out the gum paste for the flowers. Once I try a few I will let you know how they turn out.

Thanks luxe! Great site!

The sugar flowers look doable, but complicated. Do let me know how your first try turns out.

I agree with the mini rosebuds and the white hydrangea, but I actually think the larger pink flowers are lisianthus. Ranunculus have more tightly packed petals than that.

I think they look more like camellias, as the edges of the petals are more rounded than roses. Just my two cents though… hope it helps!
