Meet The Fockers?

August 29th, 2007 @ 5:39 pm by Mrs. Petunia

I’ve never actually seen that movie, but that’s what people kept saying before Mr. Petunia’s family and mine finally met! My FMIL was wonderful enough to put together this little shindig for everyone. We were all a little worried because our families couldn’t be more different. His family is, for the most part, staid and quiet and…well, I have a big Hispanic family, so, I’ll go ahead and stereotype: they’re loud! Also, my dad doesn’t speak that much English, so I thought there might be a language barrier. But it was wonderful! The Petunias are quite anti-social actually, but we were both really happy that this meeting happened and that it went so well!

Here are some pictures (I don’t know why, but I didn’t end up with too many pictures of my future in-laws! I swear that is not an indication of my not liking them. The opposite is true!)

My MOH and Mom Petunia

The happy couple (though we look a bit stoned…)

The MOH and BM (my future brother-in-law) talking bachelor/bachelorette party strategy…

Our ring bearer faces Mr. Petunia head-to-head

Me with my Man of Honor and Maid of Honor
(friends since we were 13!)

How did it go when your families finally met?

Oh - when our families met it went badly. Well, they were all nice to each other and seemed to get along (so I’m sure they can be civil at the wedding, thankfully) but we found out from both sides afterwards how much they disliked each other! Meh, oh well. They have totally different lifestyles and personalities, it didn’t really come as a surprise! They live 3 hours apart so meetings between the two are few and far between.

But actually the reason for commenting is to say that Mr. Petunia is a total hottie - nice catch Miss Petunia!!

Hahah, I second SmartL’s comment on Mr Petunia!

Our families met the xmas before our wedding. Our mothers had already met, but our fathers and siblings have met each other, so my MIL set up a huge Xmas weekend shindig with all of us. All EIGHT of us, plus 1 crazy dog, made for some fun. They even threw us a shower! THe it actually fun and went really well. My MIL made lasagna one night, and my mother made Kalbi gim. And the last day, we got put dressed up in our korean gear and took formal family pictures. :) It was too cute. Aside from the language barriers, everything went swimmingly.

ROFL: I was watching The Power of 10 last night and one of the questions was what percentage of women think their husbands are better looking than they are, or something like that, and I thought, well, at least me!

And ladies, that’s not even a good picture of him! Bastard!

Our parents met at his family’s annual clambake, and the trip was cut short by the fact that my dad’s wife thought 12AM was noon. So their flight got in at midnight, they refused to stay at the in-laws and got a hotel instead, drove four hours to the clambake the next day, and ate and ran. All in all that weekend, they spent 12 hours driving, four hours flying, and maybe three hours meeting the family. The following summer they were invited to the clambake but refused to come, and the summer after that my dad died.

In short, his family was lovely. My family is apparently the annoying in-laws.

I’m glad it went well.

Our families won’t meet until we are all together the week of the wedding. I hope they like each other or at least have the good sense to bite their tongues about it.

Our families didn’t meet until 2 days before the wedding, when my parents hosted a big dinner for everyone. It was wonderful and everyone got along so well that DH’s mom and uncle may come spend Christmas with us at my family’s home.

Our families couldn’t be more different. Hubby’s family is very weathly and talks about being weathly ALL THE TIME. They have a condo in Canada and they make us all call it a chalet. They don’t go boating, they go sailing or yahting. My mom is a school teacher and my dad passed away years ago. She comes from old money but never talks about it and thinks that people that talk about it are horribly wrong and rude. SO - needless to say - they don’t get along at all! It’s been hard to adjust to but we have to do everything seperatley.

Be glad that the meeting went well! I wish ours got along!
