Beehive

August 30th, 2007 @ 4:08 pm by Beehive

We’ll be changing the way the beehive works, so please post your questions on our new boards from now on.  Thanks! :)

In today’s hive:

  1. yibba would like to hear the “truth” about guest books from married bees and readers.  How often do you look at it?  Do guests overlook a wish jar more than a traditional guest book?  How much energy should she invest as she’s been to several weddings where she hasn’t even noticed if there was a guest book.
  2. Shirls asks if its poor etiquette not to send a std/invitation after you’ve asked the guest for their address.  Her mother has added a ton of people to the guest list and in order to accommodate them, she’s thinking about reducing acquaintences that were kind of borderline on the guest list.
  3. ilovehamm’s wedding dress is lost at the dry cleaners and it’s less than 3 weeks til her wedding.  They’re looking for it, but should she start looking for another dress?  Is there time?  Advice?
  4. JennH asks if anyone has seen cute 26 cent stamps for RSVP postcards?  She’s only seen USPS cougar stamps that seem slightly ominous, and she doesn’t want to purchase a lot of vintage stamps to make them unique.

Yibba, we did a Polaroid guest book and I love it. We have probably looked at 6-7 times in the 3 months we’ve been married.

Shirls, did you just ask for their address or did you specify that you needed it for the wedding? If it’s the second, I think you have to invite them. If it’s the first, send them a fun card or something. However, remember that you will get some declines. Maybe you could just send their invites as NOs start rolling ing.

i’d like to add a question if i may :)

ie serve a nice dry champagne and then have things people can add to make it into a champagne cocktail.

ie (peach puree + peach liquor) + champagne = bellini

altho my main concern is how to set it up so that it’s self serve. im thinking making the additions into a mixer (puree + liquor) and having a way to get the right amount into a champagne glass.

thats my biggest problem. how do i do that so that it’s not 1. a sticky mess 2. too hard to serve yourself and 3. weird

JennH - pat yourself on the back, you Green Bride. Good job not wasting extra paper. I am using return postcards, too. I was also scared of the cougar (and all of its implications), so I opted for the common buckeye butterfly 24 cent and am adding a navajo necklace 2 cent. Strangely they look nice together (and fit my bohemian style). This means that our postcards will be minimal, as our stamps are taking up a lot of real estate, but I couldn’t go for the cougar. Just coudln’t do it.

re: the wish bowl

I love the *idea* of the wish bowl, but I noticed at my friend’s wedding that hardly anyone put any wishes into the bowl. Perhaps this was because they already had a (name-only) guest book? Or maybe because there were a lot of older folks at the wedding, and didn’t know what to do?

OK, what is wrong with the cougar?!? I used it on my RSVPs and haven’t gotten any comments or complaints. Actually, my FI went to Penn State so we thought it looked a bit like the nittany lion.

Shirls - You could decide to do a wedding announcement (they get mailed out a few days after the wedding), we will probably do this for all of FMIL’s friends we won’t be able to invite.

apologies, Kate - nothing wrong with the cougar at all. I am just overly detail oriented. My FI and all of his buddies have many many “cougar” jokes (in the urban dicitionary sense of the word) and I would never hear the end of it I used the stamp.

We solved the guestbook problem by having both a guestbook and a wishbowl! The guestbook hasn’t gotten a lot of use–we only went through it once, just after the wedding, to see how our projected attendance met up with actual attendance ;-). But we’ve loved going through all the wishbowl notes! I think we’re going to scrapbook those, ultimately :-) We set up a table in the entryway of our reception venue with the guestbook and the wishbowl in the same spot–all our guests saw it!

I totally didn’t think of the “cougar” reference–I was planning on using it for our RSVP postcards, and I’m 3 years older than my FI! Oh well!

I had plans to scrapbook my wish bowl notes - I had friends at the table instructing people on what to do - but I haven’t done it yet. I also had our photographer get a group shot of us with every single table during the reception so that I can put that on the scrapbook page with the wishes from those people. That way, I made sure I documented everyone that was there, and they got to wish us well at the same time! We really, really enjoyed it!

I did the the polaroid guestbook too, and I love it. I have looked at it about 5 times in 3 months, and whenever we have guests over, it is always the first thing on the coffee table that they reach for and thumb through. I love the picture/well wishes combination, and I knew that I would never look through just a book of signed names, so that is why I chose to put the effort into something I knew I would look back on.
