Pain-free Wax?

August 31st, 2007 @ 5:18 pm by Mrs. Onion

Doesn’t sound possible does it? Well I’m skeptical, but I’m going to find out for myself. I decided to spend some serious money on “as painless as possible waxing” from Bliss Spa in New York City. I’m going to have my legs waxed (never done this before) as well as a bikini, eyebrow and lip wax to prepare for the wedding, but more importantly, the honeymoon! I hate shaving my legs and then getting into a saltwater ocean — OUCH. So I hope this will do the trick for most of the trip anyway.

I asked what their secret was as I’d heard raves on my local knot.com board. They said they use “their own special bliss wax” (of course they do) and don’t use cloth strips — the wax actually adheres to the root of your hair and they then pull the wax off.

Here is their waxing menu with prices. It’s not cheap ladies, but it is supposed to be “the best!” If you can’t treat yourself before your wedding, when can you? I’ll be sure to let you know how it goes — my appointment is next week!

I’ve had it before - it’s not technically pain free (but really, how can anything that involves pulling your hair out be pain free?), but it’s better than traditional waxing. I decided to splurge on laser hair removal before my wedding - talk about pain-ful! But so worth it! I love Bliss, you’re going to have a great experience!

Ooo I had the strip-less waxing last week at an Aveda salon and though I was going to die it hurt so much. Don’t be afraid to ask the person who does the waxing how long they’ve done it because I have my suspicions that this girl was quite new. Good luck and have fun on the honeymoon!

Are you worried at all that your skin might react if you’ve never done it before? I’m nervous about waxing because I have fairly sensitive skin.

I recently discovered sugaring which is less painful during the actual procedure AND is much, much less painful afterwards. I don’t get any of that stinging, redness, soreness that I used to get with waxing.

Becareful not to use any skin products (like retinol, benzoyl peroxide, other acne products) because it will cause reddedning of your skin where you got waxed. I believe one of the bees just blogged about that.

Also, I love getting waxing done, and it’s not exactly painless. I prefer the traditional waxing, just because it’s faster and gets more surface area, while pulling wax off (usually with tweezers) is more tedious, but precise. My waxing girl use that in my more “sensitive” spots during the brazilian, and I wanted to cry, but she said she switched to that because it is better at picking up hair.

Take an advil before you go too if you’re very sensitive to pain. It will help you afterwards. Good luck and I hope you post updates!

I’ve had hard wax (strip-free) done before and it hurts, but not as bad the normal kind. Any way you put it, hair removal from the roots is gonna hurt… but this method, definitely less than others! I loved the results!!

Before my wedding, I had underarms, legs and bikini done. I did it a couple of days beforehand and it was great — no pain by the day of!

Make sure you’re not going the week before your period, and take two ibuprofen 20 minutes before. It doesn’t hurt that much, but everyone is different. (Every time I go for a wax I think about “practicing” coping with pain for child birth… lots of deep breaths! ha ha)

I had the stripless waxing done at an aveda salon last week too, and it was just about as pleasant as waxing can be. Different for everyone, of course :)

i think it’s entirely dependent on your body. As it turns out, I have a high tolerance for waxing related pain, probably because I have a billion and one piercings all over my body. My first wax ever I got a brazillian… maybe I’m just a sucker.

reminds me, time to go back in :)

I highly recommend you trying it out before your wedding! You never know what could happen…. I once had a really bad waxing experience. I ended up with BRUISES because the wax was too hot! If you feel any pain, tell them immediately!

if they haven’t scheduled you with a person, see if you can get the fastest waxer. It’s well worth it. My girl can do a brazillian in under 10 minutes - and I used to go to a lady who took 30 - talk about dragging on the pain! Current girl gets a big fat tip every time I go in.

Yup, bikini waxing is painful no matter how you slice it (I’ve tried both kinds of waxes). The blue Aveda wax left my skin softer and less red/bumpy. Never tried Bliss’s inhouse wax. I thought they used Poetic (which they also sell via catalog and online) is the wax they use themselves?

Meduzagirl is right - the shortest period of time is the best approach! My current waxer does a super fast job - in and out for a full brazilian in 10 minutes; including final touch-up tweezing. Paradise in the world of waxing…

Has anyone tried the betweeny wax that Bliss offers on their menu? I’m a little nervous to do a full Brazillian, but I figured this might not be as bad??

NYDublinGirl says:

I had 2 waxes at Bliss NY (57 and 49th). Almost painless, I was in awe. I didn’t think the results lasted as long other other waxes, but then again it was longer between waxes. Re: betweeny, their basic isn’t enough if you have dark hair and will be wearing a bathing suit, I’d go for the betweeny.

Does anyone else have any issues with breaking out and/or the first layer (or two) of skin being removed when waxing, specifically on the face? I have pretty sensitive skin, and I am scared to wax now, two weeks before my wedding, because of such incidents in the past. Granted, they were at-home waxing attempts. Maybe going to a salon would help? I just DO NOT want to be broken out along my lips or minus a layer of skin or two on my wedding day! Any advice is much appreciated!

Hi Onion!
I’ve looked for the follow-up blog after your waxing job but couldn’t find it. I’m wondering how it went? I’m scheduled in a couple weeks and am a bit scared but will do it! How did hubby like it? Was it a surprise to him? Would you keep doing it? Let me know and give me some courage!
Sue
