The Peas Meet The Bell Peppers

September 3rd, 2007 @ 1:55 pm by Mrs. Snow Pea

After we got back from our minimoon, we had Mr. and Mrs. Bell Pepper over for dinner. I was really looking forward to meeting another bee and this gave me a chance to stretch my domestic muscles as a newlywed. This was the first time we were entertaining another married couple and we were very excited about it. Finally, I was able to break out some of our wedding gifts and use the vegetables from my garden. As you can see, this pea had a bit too much fun in the sun.

I must have been going through wedding withdrawal because I made centerpieces and even thought about making placecards just for fun. Here’s another neat idea - I used green tomatoes to fill the vases. I started with limes, but then Mr. Snow Pea complained he needed them for his caipirinhas. The green tomatoes were tomatoes that I knocked down while weeding before they had a chance to ripen.

Dahlia from my garden. They are gorgeous and in season right now.

I only added a few tomatoes because they were getting in the way of the stems. They also tend to float, so you should always test it out beforehand if you are considering DIYing your centerpieces.

No event goes by a bee without some photographs, so here’s the menu:
z10779403

Tomato salad (from my garden, of course) Grape tomatoes, olive oil, salt, pepper, basil and mint (also from my garden).

z10779404

Fresh mozzarella, basil, garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper, wheat italian bread and plum tomatoes (Oh, and did I mention these were from my garden?)

z10779405

Bean dip - I learned this from our friend in Mexico.

z10779406

BBQ Chicken breast marinated in soy sauce and citrus.

z10779407

Aracherra (Skirt Steak similar to flank steak) Mr. Snow Pea learned this in Mexico as well.

z10779408

Cajun chicken wings - We tried to copy the wings from Bahama Breeze.

z10779409

Dessert - Watermelon from my garden.

Here’s the whole gang!

Mr. and Mrs. Bell Pepper brought us macaroons from Longwood Gardens. They were very yummy and we finished them before the night ended.

It got really late and I had no idea I held the Bell Peppers captive for so long. We had a great time and were glad to make some new veggie pals!

Anyone else wanna come over for dinner with the Peas? laughin054

Wow Mrs. Pea! Your fruits of labor from your garden look sooooo yummy in your photos! I am especially impressed with your watermelon! I had tried to grow watermelon once, but they never grew bigger than a lemon. Everything looked soo good - I think you have domestic hostessing well under the belt! :)

Your garden must be stunning! Whereabouts in Philadelphia are you located? I am not used to seeing people utilize backyards the way you do in the area. :)

you’re my idol, mrs.snow pea!!! loved everything. all the bees should have a yearly reunion where the location rotates from one place to another and they get a chance to showcase their hometown.

Vivian-

We were REALLY surprised we got a watermelon at all. So we were stunned when we were weeding and found 5 watermelons of significant size. Everyone we talked to told us it couldn’t be done and even if you got one, it would be small and you never know when they ripen. It just so happens that 1 of them got eaten by an animal so we saw it was ripe and I didn’t have to feel bad about sacrificing one to see if they were ripe yet. I have a home-n-garden blog and now I can look back and see how many weeks that took, so next year I know when to pick them. We also have TONS of cantelope!

Darlene and Ickins - We do love to entertain and I geared some of our registry items towards that. I kept in mind the way I want my table setting to look and registered for select “random” items like that. In particular, I think the best deal were the crystal ice tea beverage glasses (seen in pic). $80 for the whole set from Macy’s. It’s only 20% crystal??? but who cares. It looks just like the Waterford set ($60/per glass) I registered for which is now still incomplete. I think that can really dress up a table. The rest of it is from Ross, Marshalls, Homegoods.

Julie and Chill - I used to live in Center City around the Art Museum. We moved right outside the city into Jersey actually (bleh!). We were fortunate that the house came with such a big yard, so I thought I would try my hand at gardening. Next year I have lots of other landscaping ideas. It was hard growing anything in the yard in center city. Most of the time, the squirrels would wreck everything!!

Miss Emerald says:

Holy WOW! All that from your garden?? I am so amazed! I seriously have a black thumb… I don’t think I’ve heard of anyone growing watermelon in their back yard!! =) Can I come? hehe
