About Mrs. Gummi Bear

But It’s Not Easter…

September 6th, 2007 @ 4:36 pm by Mrs. Gummi Bear

We, like the now Mrs. Plum (congratulations!), also purchased those little nests from William Sonoma. They were having a sale, so we snatched them up and bought a poop-ton. Actually W-S tried to screw us and told us we could not have them for the sale price in a little formal letter they sent us in the mail. Mr. GB called in a hurry and after being denied a bunch of times for the sale price we purchased the nests at, he was transferred to a supervisor and immediately given the correct price. While this was annoying, +1 for W-S customer service for giving us the advertised price with not too much nudging. I don’t know why, but I’ve come to expect the worst possible service from anyone these days. I feel abused.

However, unlike my smarter fellow bee, I didn’t think too much of what was going to go into the nests, so we’re here with a lot of nests and nothing to go in them. I thought of maybe putting jordan almonds in them, but honestly, I hate jordan almonds. No offense to anyone who uses them, but I’m a militant anti-nut (despite being one myself) and think that covering a nut in what would otherwise be well used sugar, is a sin. You’d see me at the wedding table with a plate of soggy nuts after chipping and sucking the coating off and spitting them back out. It’s attractive, I know - but it’s my wedding and if I want to suck the nuts and spit them out, you are still obligated to tell me I’m gorgeous and that I’m glowing. Even with that piece of almond skin stuck to my upper lip, dammit.

So save me - save me from having to endure looks of mild disgust while people stare at my wet-nut covered plate while they force out a fake compliment, burping a little into their mouths. There is little chance that my clumsy ass won’t inevitably drool some straight onto my dress, and in a dog like body-shake, all over Mr. GB and some guests. Is there any way to get cute egg chocolates without offering my first born to the Easter Bunny to make early deliveries?

I think cadbury makes little colored chocolate eggs (not THE “cadbury eggs”) that are available year round. I’ve seen them at CVS in the candy aisle. But I can’t recall for certain when.

We wanted to make egg-shaped “dirty snowballs” (crunched oreos, mixed with cream cheese and covered in white chocolate) for our nest-favors BUT we never bought the nest and were too lazy to make the eggs. So, actually this reply was pretty pointless. Don’t give up though. Those nests are cah-yoot!

Put little sleeping hamsters in them. People like rodents running around and pooping in everywhere right? Oh, that’s just me.

I think you’re thinking of Cadbury Mini Eggs. I usually only see them around Easter, but they’re very tasty and would be perfect for something like this. I don’t know if you can buy them in store, but here’s an example of a site on the internet that sells them in bulk:

You are too. freaking. funny!

(Sorry, I don’t know anything about chocolate eggs for sale this time of year, but just had to say that.)

I did a quick search for “mini chocolate eggs” in Google and got a ton of results . . . all from the UK. (What’s up with that?) So, they’re out there. They’re just not, you know, local. At least, they’re not in the top Google results.

Have you checked into local candy shops? If they don’t have it, they might have an idea where you could go looking.

Oh! And I just typed in “chocolate robin eggs” into Google and got some results there. I’m really not sure what you’re exactly looking for, but that might be a good place to start.

GOOD LUCK!!

I think life hates me because I have that nest page on WS bookmarked and I visit it often to see if they ever go on sale, and they never do. But apparently I’m wrong. Now I’m sad because I literally have 20 bags of chocolate eggs from Eastertime (yes, they are still edible, I checked the dates) with no pretty nests! The other ones I found pale in comparison to these beauties. Phooey.

Your post had me on the floor!
This past weekend my cousin was married in Colorado Springs and after the rehearsal we went to the lounge at the resort for some drinks. The server brought us a nice dish of nuts. So we sat around visiting and eating nuts and my cousin was talking to me and pardon me, but the phrase “you have some nut skin in your teeth” actually came out of my mouth! Thanks for making me remember!

We were going to do little nests with our mini buttons inside. If you want to go the non-edible route. :)

My friend had the same WS nest for her birthday and she had robin blue egg soaps in hers. She manage to put 2 in the basket and wrapped the whole thing with tulle. It was really cute.

Soap is pricey, but you might be able to find the same item for cheaper.

I think I’ve since malted eggs (like malted milk balls). You can find tons of stuff on the online candy stores (just do a google search).

i’m having nest favours. i found a local chocolate company who was happy to being out their egg mould (usually used only at Easter) to make a bunch for me. they charged only 50 cents each and I had my choice of foil colors. Coordinated, within budget, local & yummy + no almonds to spit out.
You should ask around.
I have a problem - i’m 3 nests short!!! Guess nobody has any extras? My weddings only 9 days away and i’m in Canada!

Oh man these are cute:

A bit pricey though, but they DO have other egg-themed candies. Good luck!

Your post was too funny! Thanks for the laugh. Another non-edible idea: Little sachet of lavendar or other potporri? Or a fancy little envelope of seeds? I just ate popcorn and chocolate raisins (hey, chocolate raisins would work! Or, look like rabbit poopies) and I have debris in my teeth. Glad I’m in good company! Keep us posted on the nests.

ws used to sell blue ‘robin’ eggs to go in the nest. otherwise why not use those malted milk eggs. bulk candy stores online have them in stock year-round.

Dani -

Have you done the count including yourself and the wedding party in the number? If so - you could always just have your parents and you not get one and everyone else would be all right. That’s what we had to end up doing.

I second the buttons! We’re making one inch buttons with vintage 30’s fabric and gluing a magnet backing. I wish I could afford your nest, I’m hand making mine from wooden packing material and the house is a mess.

yay! so many good ideas, I’ll get on it. I think we might end up scouring the internet for those cadbury eggs, I really like those and some candy hoarder out there has them, I know it.

dani: wish I could help you! we bought extras, but we’ve had a few +1 that we can’t actually say “uh.. no” to. :( so we might actually be at the limit of our nests!

jen: that’s hilarious. Now mr gb is wandering around the house occasionally cracking up and saying “nut skin!!!”

beckums: excelsior? mr. GB is violently allergic to it - as we discovered having bought a lot to pack the invites in. :)

mrs. plum: they are amazing - I hadn’t expected them to be this cute even with the online photos and your photos! I want to know what farm in california makes these and watch them do it!

Okay… The Cadbury mini egg was suggested to me as well, and quite frankly they were freakishly dimpled and powdery. I bought a whole bag at easter time expecting the best because of all the rave reviews - NEXT (I was not impressed)

We ended up with light blue and cream peanut M&Ms. Still a candy covered nut yes, but who doesn’t like peanut m&m’s? If you don’t mind keeping the standard M (even if it’s not your last name initial) they are super cheap… If you want to pay extra, you can get your initials or even a saying printed instead of the M. But I gotta tell you the peanut m&m’s look like little eggs in our nests!!!

FYI Nest Lovers - Weddingthings.com has pretty cute, but smaller nests for $1.50 ea for their ‘going going going gone’ sale

http://www.weddingthings.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=WeddingThings&Product_Code=SP007

You can fit about 10 Peanut M&M’s in each one, and they are about 3″ in diameter

I ordered the eggs I was going to use from France:

http://www.confiserieflorian.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=226

While they are pretty expensive when you factor in the shipping, they taste absolutely DIVINE. Unfortunately, the ones I have aren’t going to last another year for our rescheduled reception, so I am going to have to eat them all myself. While I am more than willing to make that sacrifice, I don’t know if I am going to want to shell out the money to buy them again next year. *Sigh*

For some reason, European countries (especially the UK) have way more options…

I actually ordered some from this next place that were pretty good, but now I can’t find them:

Miss GB - They are a decent size - I would say about twice the size of the Cadbury ones - and it takes me two bites to eat one (most of the time). I was planning on putting three in each nest, and I think my nests are beween 3″-4″.

How many do you need? Would you be interested in taking my extras off my hands? I think I have seven unopened bags - about 275 individual eggs. I ordered them in April, but I think the exp. date isn’t until next March. Email me if you are interested!

Godiva makes an ADORABLE white chocolate bird. They are *so* cute! Everyone always comments on them - might be worth trying to locate?
