About Mrs. Caramel

The Perfect Ring

September 11th, 2007 @ 3:16 pm by Mrs. Caramel

When Mr. Caramel and I were dating seriously, we knew it was heading for marriage.  So we half jokingly discussed ring shopping together.  I definitely wanted a ring that no one had, so I tried looking for antique style rings.

The ring I ended up loving so much was from a cheapy website. I seriously didn’t care about carats or size or anything. All I cared about was that it was a beautifully styled ring! I showed Mr. Caramel the ring that I fell in love with, and he later told me that there was no way he could get me this truly crappy ring from an online source! I guess the quality was pretty terrible. Little did I know back then that the ring is often extremely significant for the male, sometimes even moreso than for the female!

So anyhow, this is the picture I showed Mr. Caramel:

I loved how it looked like a flower, and how the side designs didn’t make the middle rock look TOO bulky or big. I just think I would look ridiculous with too big of a rock on my finger.

During our serious dating, Mr. Caramel secretly got the ring custom made based on this picture. Many people in Southern California get their engagment and wedding rings in the jewelry district of downtown Los Angeles. The hard part is trying to find a vendor if you don’t know anyone at all. You want to rely on word of mouth, so here’s the contact information for the guy who worked with us:

Princess Jewelry
Thomas Kim
608 S. Hill St Plaza 1001 Los Angeles, CA 90014
213-623-6913

I was very happy with the results! FYI - If you pay in cash, he might give you a better deal but keep in mind that he’s pretty fair with his pricing already. He’ll be very honest with you!

Here is the finished product with some minor changes. They made the brackets different and of course, the quality of the ring is much better than the ring online. :) I was SUPER surprised when I opened the box to see this beauty. I had just assumed that Mr. Caramel had forgotten all about it! I like how the middle stone makes the round diamond look almost like a princess cut, since I had been debated between the two shapes anyhow.

It’s Beautiful! I know what you mean - the ring is a much bigger deal to the boy….I think it has something to do with bragging rights. My honey-to-be enjoys the compliments of the ring more than I do! As long as he is happy :)

I agree. That really is a beautiful ring and how thoughtful of him to have remembered what you really liked!

Which website did you find the cheaper ring on?

I love the antique look.

Oh - and it does mean a lot to the boys. I would have been happy with less…

Sooo pretty!!! Thanks for the link to the jeweler. We’re looking around and it’s all about “who you know” out here in L.A. Love that your honey did that for you!

I saw the exact same ring at the “cheapy” site. I dont remember what site it was anymore, but I have the picture saved somewhere!! Beautiful ring, yours is soooo lovely, it looks so much classier, and you can tell it was made by a talented jeweler.

Mr. Caramel won’t tell me how much anything costs, so I don’t even know anything about it! Maybe he’ll tell me in 20 years and I’ll let you know then! haha

Soooo pretty! I have a vintage style ring too and I love that no other ring looks quite like mine. Congrats on getting exactly what you wanted!

And boys are quite serious about their e-rings. I think it is a status symbol. :)

That’s absolutely wonderful!! It’s exactly what I would have originally envisioned for myself too — interestingly my tastes changed when we actually started ring shopping (rectangle, very simple), but I still “OOOOOH” whenever I see a beautiful vintage style like yours!

And it IS funny about the boys and the rings. Sometimes I catch Mr. T gazing lovingly at his creation. He likes to pick up my hand at turn it around so the diamond catches the light and makes sparkles! ;-)

I am pretty sure this ring is from emitations.com. I bought the same ring from that site last year! I love it!

Or you could simply make each other’s rings with your own hands to your own design, guided by a guy who has been teaching jewelry making at UCSD for over 25 years. Something a s complex as this would definitely need his input, however.

I have the same ring!!!

Except I decided to go with a marquis diamond in the center because I thought it nicely mirrored the marquis shapes on the side.

The only problem I had was in finding a wedding band to fit next to it. I decided to have a puzzle fit band custom made to fit next to it with identical small diamonds all around it. I got married one month ago - if you send me your e-mail, I can send you a photo when my photos get in from our photographer. I’m kmikulis at gmail dot com.

I looked and looked through estate jewelry stores for a vintage ring. I saw this one at the SF Jewelry Mart (basically a collection of 100 wholesale jewelry stores which is also where we bought our bands) and it had the unique vintagely look I wanted.
