About Mrs. Chickadee

Color Palette Frenzy

September 13th, 2007 @ 1:39 pm by Mrs. Chickadee

The first few weeks after getting engaged, I was completely inundated by the ideas in one magazine after another. Everywhere I looked I found a new theme or color scheme that seemed absolutely perfect. Well, at first…Some people have a hard time choosing colors. I’m not one of them. In fact, I’m great at putting colors together. I’m just bad at sticking with them. I’m pretty resolute about most decisions, but THE color scheme? Well, it’s been a bumpy road.

1. First, I wanted Tiffany blue. I would have settled for David’s Bridal Pool (shown below). I’m not really sure where this idea came from, but it didn’t take long after getting engaged to change my mind. Maybe I didn’t see enough Tiffany blue in the magazines? That must have been the culprit.

2. Next I wanted purple with bright green accents. This was inspired by my experimenting with Photoshop. I came up with this adorable Save the Date, which I still am quite fond of, even if the concept has changed completely. My mom wasn’t exactly sold on this, probably because it was so non-traditional. I should note that I made this STD mock-up prior to actually choosing a date. I just looked at the calendar and found a Saturday in June, but I liked the look of it so much that it became my first choice for our wedding date!

3. From there I turned to my favorite color: pink. More specifically light light pink. I had already fallen in love with the pink and gold color scheme in Martha’s Winter Wedding Mag, but one ad from David’s Bridal really had me hooked (well, temporarily that is). As it turns out, I can’t find the light pink dress I loved anywhere on David’s Bridal’s website…I guess the wedding industry is just as fickle as I am! In the end I decided the light pink was too sweet and sugary for the type of wedding I wanted. I wanted something dark, bold, and a little trendier.

4. Next was a short lived affair with navy blue and fuschia. This was inspired by The Knot magazine from last Fall where they featured a darling pink and blue striped tie and other preppy details. I spent a lot of time playing in Photoshop & Illustrator with these colors. Mr. Chickadee thought the colors were nice (”I like blue” he would say) but my little sister (and MOH) was of a different opinion. This was one of the monogram options I came up with while making up pretend invites:

5. I also had a brief stint with hot pink and light pink, but I could never make it look more grown up than a 12 year old’s birthday party. It’s just not even worth a picture. :)

6. This was about the time we came back to dark purple. I just found myself drawn to the color, specifically the shade “aubergine” by Dessy which is sooo pretty in person. I decided I couldn’t go back to the bright green color of before, and instead decided to pair it with gold, which would lend a more sophisticated air to the event. I still love the thought of purple and gold and if it wasn’t for one really amazing Knot bio, I’m sure I would still be doing the color scheme. This is one invitation I saw on Finestationery.com that nearly sealed the deal:

So what did I decide? Well, I think I’ll save my final color choice (oh gosh, I hope it’s really final!) for another day. It deserves a post unto itself, I think!

So how did you ladies pick your colors? Did you use an online palette generator? Go with your favorite colors? Center the colors around a specific fabric or scrapbook paper? Did you choose colors at the recommendation of Martha Stewart’s fabulous magazine editors? Anyone go through the same crazy color indecision as me? I’d love to hear about it!

Well my fiance loves Sears, and while I was there in boredom, I found the paint aisle. It was a really great starting point because I just picked colors that I liked and then went home and mixed and matched. They also have pamphlets with color combos already paired up.

Oh gosh, I’m the same way too. My train of thought has been:

1. Pink
2. Pink and white
3. Pink and silver
4. Pink and green
5. Pink and indigo
6. Green, black and white
7. Back to pink and green with green being the main colour

Note my slight love affair with pink? Then it finally dawned on me that I really only care that I have some pink in my bouquet. Other than that, I could care less if it doesn’t appear anywhere else in the entire wedding.

Once I realized that, I really wanted a mainly green and white wedding until I realized there are no bridesmaid dresses in a shade of green that I like. They are all either pale sage or forest green or olive.

Now I’m onto iteration #8: Blue and green with pink, white and green flowers. I sure hope I’m done with changing my mind now.

Well, I’m from Kansas, which is where we’re getting married. Ever since I moved away, I’ve appreciated Kansas in a whole new way, so I immediately new I wanted to incorporate sunflowers into our wedding. It just so happens I love chocolate brown and bright (not pastel) green, so our wedding colors will center around those of a sunflower: dark brown, bright green and a splash of yellow. It has made it so easy to stick with.

I have been a Tiffany girl ever since birth (seriously!). Every Christmas I remember going to Tiffany’s and picking out something new with my family and then going iceskating. It’s our tradition! So when it came time to pick colors, I couldn’t not acknowledge the obsession I’m known for! Especially near christmas! Oh and gold as my second color, because it’s the color of my e-ring…and the color’s pretty with Tiffany blue, and it’s near christmas-time (yup, deep thoughts there…hehe)

Tiffany/Turquoise Blue, White, and Silver - with small amounts of black accents for impact.

Turquoise blue and steel gray are my sorority colors! I love them - and settled on them after realizing my dream color scheme of soft pinks and whites - is just all to cruel for the men in my life!

The way the colors evolve….our minds are like revolving doors!

Haha I feel you! I’ve changed my colors 1564531252 times! I can’t even remember where I started! The following were at one point or another were color schemes that I had:

1. red (short-lived)
2. Fuchsia and orange
3. fuchsia, orange and lime
4. purple and green
5. Navy and yellow
6. Navy and fuchsia with hints of yellow/gold (this was the color scheme for a while)
7. Navy and fuchsia and lime (I saw pretty lime orchids and wanted them)
8. Pink and Poppy (it was in Martha!) - and I needed a more feminine palette

and now: teal, magenta and ivory (maybe some hints of gold) - I’m hoping this one will stay because I’m starting to get to the point when i need to stop changing my mind!

I love the deep purple with gold. Really attractive. There’s something special about opposites on the color wheel.

Also, for those of us with lifelong LOVE of a particular color, it’s so nice to just feel free to embrace that color for the wedding and not feel obligated to shop around for something trendier.

P.S. Website is actually at http://www.finestationery.com (not stationAry)

I jumped right into my color scheme and now I am starting to have second thoughts! I am having a late April wedding and I envision it being a garden teaparty type thing - not in the old Victorian way, but in a whimsical Alice in Wonderland sort of way. My original color scheme was light sage (very close to the background of Weddingbee, actually!), with white, super pale pink, and light gray as accents. Now that I’ve spent the last seven months devouring every bridal site and magazine I could get my hands on I’m starting to wonder if I made the best choice. Luckily, I haven’t made any purchases in the color scheme so I can always change.

I say just go with your gut and don’t commit until you’re sure!

I refused to “officially” pick colors, and anytime anyone asked me my color scheme, I maintained I didn’t really have one, even though pretty much everything was shades of pink with silver, gold, or pale blue accents.

The inspiration came from my dress, which is made of kimono fabric, so it is far from pure white. There are silver and gold metallic fans and cranes with beautiful colored wings…mostly pink/blue/lavender, but some have orange, red and black on their heads. It sounds like a riot of colors, but it’s really not. Anyway, I picked this paper from LCI Paper (http://www.lcipaper.com/catalog/specialty.paper?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=LPC&Product_Code=CHY613&lid=golden+flowers) for our invitations, and everything else just grew out of those two things.

I felt less pressured to have to “pick & stick” with two or three set colors, and instead just used a whole coordinating range.

Oops, it looks like I screwed up with the link. If you want to see the paper, it’s at http://www.lcipaper.com. Go to “Japanese Chiyogami Papers” and then it’s the “Golden Flowers” pattern.

I was recently practicing building inspiration boards, and purple and green were the last colors I used. I found a really pretty panel of fabric with two shades of purple, white, and a bright green to start me down that path. The board turned out gorgeous, and I’m sure your wedding will, too.

I debated on colors as well, and at first it was chocolate/light blue because my FI really really loved the color combo. I think we first saw it when looking at towels at Restoration Hardware! But then, I couldn’t forget the fact that I wanted the flowers to be in the color scheme, and I love love LOVE pink flowers, especially roses and orchids… and those just don’t come in blue!

So, in the end, the color scheme is chocolate, burgundy, and dark pink. Chocolate and burgundy goes great for dresses and linens, dark pink is great for flowers, the colors go well together, and pink flowers will go well against both chocolate and burgundy. Plus - we have a branch theme going on along with orchids, so the brown is also tied in there!

Our reception space is white & orange, so we had to find something that complemented that. We weren’t set on particular wedding colors, so it was easy to go with Orange with accents of pale yellow and pale pink.

I did the paint card thing too. It worked great. I actually picked plum/eggplant and gold as my main colors and I’m accenting with apricot, spicy orange, and greens.

At first, I was planning to do something with opera pink and a deep sage green, but at the request of the mister, went with capri blue and a paler green, with lavender, antique white and gold as accents. I really like how it’s looking.

I’m a purple gal, too, with light yellow and chocolate brown, and tiny dashes of champagne. I have had the hardest time keeping the purple the deep dark royal blueish purple I want, when so much purple that’s out there right now tends toward the red or burgundy side of things!

I have had the hardest time…I always wanted pink & green but then I saw how popular it was…then I liked pink & yellow but yellow with the champagne colors in my wedding dress looks horrible! We have beautiful purple/blue flowers at my house, and I really wanted to incorporate that color, but then I realized I can still have those flowers in my bouquet. When I had my bridesmaids try on dresses, I fell in love with an ice blue color. Finally, I have settled on different shades of pink, light green, brown, and ivory. Hopefully that will stick! Who knew something so simple could be so difficult!

I wasn’t one of those “normal” girls that dreamed about all the aspects of their wedding before they were even engaged. But there was one thing that I knew I wanted for my wedding and that was the color scheme. I’ve known for years that I wanted red (specifically David’s Bridal Apple red) and black as my wedding colors. Of course, that has become a very popular color scheme for weddings in the past few years, but I still chose it for my wedding. I think it’s a very classy and classic combination (my husband’s aunt and uncle had the same colors at their wedding almost 25 years ago). I love how everything turned out with our colors and the wedding and don’t regret my color scheme one bit!

Hi!
I smile writing this, because I loove that invitation with the bow! However, we had black and white as theme on our wedding so I re-did them in Adobe Indesign (been working as a graphic designer) and got them printer. However, the assembly was on me, my mum and future husband to be. The blog is in swedish and heres the result:

http://w2007.blogspot.com/2007/06/dagens-diy-brllopsinbjudningar.html

Ok, so colours; I always wear black lothes (yes I work in advertising.. ehm..) and love the crisp freshness of white. The aubergine colour on the invitation would have been my second choice, love the hue, the fullness! But my best advice is; think of the theme overall for your celebration. Is it on the countryside? In a church? Big or intimate? Leisure or tails? :)

Next; think of the season. Heavy colours might work sumemrtime, bit rather as an accent colour..

Last but least; go with what feels right in your heart. Just drop it for a while and let it come to you. You will know what colour eventually! :)

I know this post is a few days old by now, but I actually am using the same color scheme that my mother used - deep burgundy, pale pink, white and silver. (maybe this can count as something borrowed!) My wedding is coming up this november, so the burgundy ties in that autumn tone while maintaning a softer, less rustic, atmosphere.
