Healthy Start

September 14th, 2007 @ 12:56 pm by Mrs. Peppermint

I’ve never been a fan of exercise. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably thinking, “who is?!”. But, let me tell you, I’ve met those people. They do exist. They live for the rush. For that great feeling they get after a good work out. My college roommate used to tell me how she loved running and knew it was a good work-out if she threw up after (sorry if that’s disgusting, but they were her words, not mine!).

I don’t think I’ll ever be a fan of exercise, but (yes, there is a but), I must say that after having pushed myself to go to the gym with regularity for the last month or so, I am feeling pretty good. I’ve been eating better (but trust me, I’m no saint…I really do have a penchant for sweets) and am actually starting to see results. Now, for those exercise-loving types, results are expected–but from my limited bouts with trying to work out (with little to no consistency), I didn’t think results were possible.

I’ve lost a few pounds (I refuse to look at the scale when I’m weighed, but sources have confirmed this fact) and actually do feel great. I still have “problem” areas, but I’m definitely off to a good start. My new staple is Greek yogurt–I like to put some fruit and/or granola on top when I feel indulgent. Yes, this is how I live it up these days…Here’s to staying motivated and seeing results!

And for your amusement, an ad from Slimfast:

Aww I actually cracked up at that ad! I wonder what the groom’s facial expression looks like…?

My FI lives on the Slimfast thing and it totally works for him. You just have to be good and not having a Slimfast AND then a meal!

Moi - I completely agree. The ad preys on women’s insecurities, and plays up the misogynistic idea that looking good (for a very limited definition of “good”) is what is important, not feeling good or being healthy.

It says “not being skinny is disgusting and will ruin your wedding day”.

Ugh.

Yeah, that’s a beautiful cake, with an ugly sink-hole. :) Do you go to a gym in LA? I need motivation!

Miss Peppermint-

I was one of those women who HATED to run. HATE! But after I got engaged last year I decided it was time to get in shape…and gave myself a year to do so. At first going to the gym and eating better really sucked. I could barely do a mile on the treadmill (with lots of walking breaks!)…but now I’m up to 3-3.5 miles and I love it! I never thought I’d say it, but I enjoy running! I feel so horrible on days that I don’t work out…it really does help with energy and general “feeling good.”
Anyway, stick with it! I predict that you’ll start craving that feel good feeling you get and be exercising regularly in no time! The best part (for me) was the new clothes I got to buy after about 3-4 months of a regular exercise and diet routine. It hadn’t seemed like there was much difference in how I looked…until all of a sudden people started commenting on how much weight I had lost! I’m by no means a skinny-minnie now, but I look like I’m in shape and healthy.
Good luck!
