Reader Buzz: Your Wedding Day

September 14th, 2007 @ 2:19 pm by Reader Buzz

Mrs. Bee here.

I often hear brides say that their wedding day was perfect, and they wouldn’t have changed a single thing.  Call me a pessimist (because I am one! smiley3014)… although our wedding was wonderful, there were definitely things I would have done differently.  Maybe it’s all just a matter of perspective.

But I’m really interested in hearing what our married readers have to say!

How would you describe your wedding day?

To be fair, I think there’s a difference between “It was perfect and went off without a hitch!” (meaning: everything went according to plan) and “There are some things I would have done differently” (meaning: I would have made different plans/picked a different color scheme/had fewer bridesmaids).

Example: I know of nothing that DIDN’T go according to plan for our wedding — it was of the “without a hitch” variety. However, I would have picked different dresses for the girls to wear.

you’re right and i had a difficult time wording the options, but i guess i’m referring specifically to the wedding day itself.

“Problems” is a relative term. For a couple gushing with happiness on their wedding day, it’s almost impossible for any glitches to ruin the day! Some of the best marriages start out with the craziest wedding days, no? I love the fact that we got some surprises.

Now that I’m 3 months married, I feel like my wedding was perfect! However, the day of, I was definitely not thinking perfect. The POWER went out 20 minutes before our ceremony (and stayed out til the end)! I was panicked, but my amazing bridal party through a dance party in the pitch black bride’s room to keep me calm! I wouldn’t have made it without them, and now that is one of my favorite memories!

I would have to say my day was perfect especially because of the little things that went wrong. A few of those were the most amazing things that I will remember!

On my wedding day, there just happened to be the fire at ground zero. It was 2 blocks away from my reception, so the roads were blocked. The majority of our guests were able to go through the police yellow tape because they told the police about the wedding. However, the fire was out of control for a while and 2 firefighters died. Unfortunately, some of our guests were turned away and told that the hotel would be soon evacuated. I really was going to cry if it did happen!!! But in the end, we were not evacuated. Although I lost a few people between the ceremony and the reception, and the dinner started about one hour late, we still had a blast. Instead of taking pictures at South Street Seaport as planned, we ended up with pictures of us walking down Westside Highway with the wedding party and tons of FDNY trucks.
It was definitely not what we had planned, but now, we have NYTimes story to document our wedding. :)

I still think of our wedding day as the most perfect, thrilling day of my life. I spent about a year planning and agonizing and dreaming about our wedding and it surpassed my dreams. I want to do it again - to the same man, of course.

Oh man, were there some crazy things that went wrong at our wedding. I plan to blog about some of this nutty stuff, but for the most part they are things that were completely out of my control. Nothing bothered me on the day of our wedding though, a few things bothered me later, and 5 months later I’ve pretty much chalked it up to a mirror for lifes ups and downs… sometimes weird stuff happens!!!
