Guest List Lifesaver

September 17th, 2007 @ 2:14 pm by Mrs. Penguin

The addresses are rolling in for our guest list from multiple parents, and sometimes handwriting gets a little hard to read. A quick thing that I do every time I receive a new name and address is to GoogleMap each address, just to make sure that it exists. You’d hate for one of your guests not to receive an invitation just because of a simple address mix up or spelling goof!

Take the first page of our list from Mr. Penguin’s parents on the left, and my corrections on the right (of course, for identity purposes, I’ve only included the mistakes, but you get the idea):

Bearbath (nothing)” and “Bearpath Trail” are two ENTIRELY different things. Sometimes errors aren’t really errors at all, but simple handwriting misinterpretations …I’m sure the Mattson’s would be pleasantly amused if I addressed my invites to “The Mutlson’s

As you can see, it’s just page one, even though it’s a short list. So check your addresses (and names, even). You might be surprised at what you find!

We got all kinds of incorrect name spellings and addresses from my in-laws. I used superpages.com to verify names and addresses.

You can also do the “reverse lookup” and put in the address and it will tell you the name that goes with it.

Very helpful :)

Awesome, Mrs Radish, an even better idea! Its pretty funny what kinds of kooky things happen when someone gives you a handwritten name/address :)

LOL I swear I could’ve been looking at the list my mom sent me. I love my mom, but her handwriting needs serious work. Thanks for the tip. :)

Amen, sister. If only I would have thought of this. I try not to think about all of the misspellings and wrong addresses that my future in-laws provided me!

hehe… I’m asking for it typed in excel (my parents keep and electronic address book in Excel, so it’s easy!)

Note of caution about Google maps - they will pinpoint a house even if no such number exists. Try it on a street you know the numbers on - like subtract two from your own house number (as long as that’s not your neighbor’s number already) and even though you know there isn’t such a number on your street, Google will still assign it. I do see what a great idea it is for verifying street names, zip codes, etc. Just be careful if the element in question is the actual house number (”is that a 1 or a 7? a 3 or an 8?”) Then the white pages may be more useful. Good luck! (Oh and I love Google, but this is something that I discovered while house hunting/researching real estate. Better be safe than sorry!)

A similar site to the one Mrs. Radish suggested is http://www.whitepages.com. I work in the admissions office of my school, and that site is a lifesaver.

Meleven - Ooh, good to know! I’ll probably follow Mrs Radish and Joyful’s suggestions and use the phonebooks online!

I recommend using the USPS also. If anyone knows how to get mail to your intendeds, it’s them.

http://www.usps.com under zip code finder.
