Invitations… Round 2

September 17th, 2007 @ 6:32 pm by Mrs. Penguin

I printed my invites out a few months ago, but for some reason I had printed a 5PM start time for the ceremony…and unfortunately the winery (our venue) doesn’t even CLOSE until 5PM. I have no idea what I was thinking…only that maybe I thought “Five Thirty” sounded weird, so I just left it as “five o clock” and didn’t bother to proofread before I printed it.

DUMB DUMB DUMB.

Luckily, printing my own invites meant that a reprint wasn’t going to set me far back financially. It probably cost less than $30 in supplies and paper to redo everything.

So, of course, after confirming with our wedding coordinator that indeed, our start time is five thirty (and worded “half past five in the evening”), I broke out the Gocco and reprinted.

Step one: Using Luxe Cream 5×5 paper from The Paper Source, my Gocco and all the Gocco related supplies, I got started. I used 2 screens for the entire invite, placing the flower branches, and the “&” and “06 07 08″ on one screen, and the flowers and invitation wording on the other screen.

Here’s the first screen, pre flashing.

Here’s the very bottom layer. I used grey Riso ink and mixed it with a little white to make sure that the background text was lighter than the text that would later be printed on top, in dark grey.

Any empty part of a screen is reusable. If you only need to use parts of your screen, and another part has been inked, simply tape a thick piece of paper like I have over the used portion of the screen, and ink up your new screen. You can also re-flash unused portions of your screen as many times as you want, just don’t overlap new and old designs.

Print, print, and print some more.

You can even print using several colors, just be sure to use ink blocking to protect one color from bleeding into another part of your design.

Fin.

To attach the invitations to the Gravel diagonal Pocketfolds ($10.25 per 10 pack, also from The Paper Source) I used my Xyron Sticker Maker I bought a while back (best price I found was $39.99 at save-on-crafts.com). The sticker maker turns your entire invitation into a (SURPRISE!) sticker, making sure those puppies stick nice and firmly to the pocketfolds.

The finished product. To be added to the side pocket will be the RSVP, RSVP envelope, Directions and Accommodations cards, which are still in the works.

Several people have asked me what “Gocco ink” looks like. If you click on the picture below, hopefully you will be able to see the fine detail. It looks nothing like computer printing, and is well worth the investment if you plan on doing your own print media for your wedding!

Those are beautiful!

I do want to caution those who are interested in gocco-ing their invitations… the text does not come out crisp on the gocco machine so if your invites/STDs/programs/etc are heavy on text and you like crisp lettering, I would not suggest gocco. I originally went the gocco route on mine and ended up just printing them out on a color inkjet.

Thanks, Ladies!

Dysha, the ink takes anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes to dry.

hmmm.. or could you Gocco the background image, THEN run it through your printer for crisp lettering? I’m thinking yes.

Amy - I’ve never had any of the problems you’re talking about with getting crisp letters, but I know others have experienced it on screens due to poor masters (carbon not dark enough), not using the blue filter, or using very fibrous paper. I chose to print out my huge paragraphs on my laser printer (ie. directions page) however, but my invite pages were nice and cleanly printed.

Beautiful. You did an awesome job! I am getting married 2 weeks after you and I havent even started designing my invites.

Im a graphic designer and I dont like anything I do. Its frustrating. I love the idea of the Xyron… but I have no idea where to get that here in canada. Save-on-Crafts doesnt ship to canada :(

Keep up the good work! Can’t wait to see more!!!

I loved your invites when you posted them on the Knot! I’m so excited to see them again because I wanted to show them to my fiance, he’s designing ours and I love your font choices.

Thanks for the nice words, ladies!

I also have never had “crispness” issues, I think Amy is technically right, i mean, after all, the resolution that you can achieve on a Gocco does not equal one that you can get with your LaserJet. That being said, though, for wedding purposes, I found that the Gocco gives you a great, crisp letter. As you can see though, I didnt use any “flourish” type letters, just bold, plain-ish ones.

Although I should note, Gocco looks NOTHING like computer printing…it looks like acrylic paint printing, rather than ink printing. So it gives you an entirely different look from computer printing.
Hopefully that last pic I posted in the blog gives you an idea of how crisp a letter can be…perhaps next time I post a Gocco project, I’ll use my scanner rather than a snapshot so you can really see what you’re getting with Gocco!

Di - heres a little breakdown…there are other parts of the invitation that have yet to be done (response card, response envelope, directions, accommodations, outer envelopes) but heres what the finished product will cost: (80 invitation sets total)

$82 Grey pocketfold enclousure
$16 cream paper for actual invitation
$16 pool colored “accomodations” paper
$16 cream colored “directions” paper
$11 pool colored 4 bar response card
$24 4 bar envelopes for response cards
$34 outer envelopes
==================
$199 for paper products

you can figure that I will spend around $30 in Gocco supplies for all of the associated costs for printing, so I’m spending around $230 total for all my invitations.

Hope that helps!

Gorgeous — love them! I finally broke down and bought a Gocco last night. (Hopefully — the site was all in Japanese, and I don’t speak a word, so we’ll see what, if anything, shows up!) So it’s extra exciting to see all these projects and helpful to hear the tips and details. Thanks!!

Hey, if anyone is looking for someone awesome to do amazing invitations - check out this:

http://www.wistfuleye.com

There is no way a written review can describe how much Susan at Wistful Eye not only gave me beautiful invitations, favors placecards etc…but also helped me truly visualize the look of my wedding. I came to her with a few ideas and she listened to me with such a supportive and joyful ear. Then, she ran with those ideas and made then so much more beautiful, cohesive and unique than I ever could have expected. She was always willing to provide new ideas, talk realistically about my budget and deliver everything as promised with more than enough time to fit into our timeline. She is a GEM in every way. When you speak with her, you truly can feel her excitement for your day. When you see her products, you are struck with how artistry and professionalism have been perfectly merged into such a delight of a woman! I can’t more enthusiatically endorse her.
