“The Artist in His Museum” by Charles Peale.

The artwork and the architectural design of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts is just so breathtaking. I especially love this dramatic painting our photographer Nicole Polk captured - it’s a self-portrait of the artist Charles Peale lifting up a curtain to reveal his art gallery. The rest of the museum includes over 300 sculptures and 1000 paintings by American artists.

We didn’t have enough time to take photos throughout the museum. There’s actually a private gallery of sculptures where the bride and groom can take portraits. Here’s some portraits taken of knottie Satto.

The Historic Landmark Building only accommodates smaller wedding sizes, about 150 maximum. If you plan to have a larger guest list, the Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building (also part of the PAFA) might work well for your wedding. It accommodates about 350 guests.

It was once a dream to have our wedding at the PAFA. The museum was like no other museum I’d seen so far, and the size was just perfect for an intimate wedding. The artwork and sculptures are so beautiful that I didn’t have to work on adding much design to our ceremony and reception area. The events manager at the PAFA, William Swoope, was extremely helpful coordinating all the events on our wedding day. We really didn’t need a wedding coordinator because he was always there for us!

A dream turned into reality, the PAFA was truly a beautiful place to have our intimate wedding. Our budget gives details on how much our venue costs turned out.

Mrs. Bell Pepper, I loved all the details of your wedding, ESPECIALLY the location! The PAFA is a museum I admired when I was growing up and my mom would take me there; I still like to get back there whenever I can.

The photo in front of Peale’s masterpiece is so great! (That image was on the cover of one of my art history books in college :-) )

I’m so ridiculously jealous!!!! What I wouldn’t give to have our wedding in an art gallery!!! Argh - if only to have a bigger budget.

Actually, the cost of having a wedding at the PAFA wasn’t too expensive, especially for a wedding under 100 guests. It worked out nicely. I think if possible, go for a smaller wedding size and some unique venues will really give you a good deal. The museum rental cost went down from $4000 to $2000 with our guest list size.

I’m happy to see that you featured my photos from Joy and Bob’s wedding at PAFA! I really enjoyed working there, what a beautiful space. They also allowed me to set up a seamless paper backdrop upstairs near the reception room, so that I could take portraits of guests with their friends and families in a fun candid way, all the while documenting the party in the next room. You can see more images from this wedding on my site: http://www.karenwise.com under Philadelphia in the Gallery.
