About Mrs. Hummingbird

Top Three Things

September 18th, 2007 @ 4:47 pm by Mrs. Hummingbird

With all the wedding magazines and books I read, I’ve come across a lot of different pieces of advice to help when planning for the big day.

However as I’ve heard from everyone who has been married, despite all the planning, some things are just guaranteed to change so, instead of being upset that everything is not a 100 per cent duplicate of the picture you had in your head, the best thing to do is to pick three things that are important to you and focus on putting your energy into those aspects.

Although I like to think of myself as a pretty roll-with-the-punches kind of gal when it comes to wedding stuff, I know that I do tend to stress out sometimes when I feel overloaded, so I am embracing this “Top Three” idea and focusing on:

1) The dress - I want something that’s my style (perhaps with a splash of colour?) and that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. I don’t think that I could in good conscience drop $2,000 on a dress, knowing I would never wear it again.

2) The music - Work on the playlist has begun and I am obsessed. Mr. Hummingbird is now catching musical fever and has come up with a few awesome ideas himself (I’ll write about them in a post later this week!).

3) The food - I cannot tell you how many weddings/formal events have I been to where I’ve had to eat mystery meat. It’s usually bland, encased in some sort of gravy cocoon and the temperature is usually just about thawed. This used to not bother me so much but since Mr. Hummingbird and I have been together, he’s encouraged me to expand my culinary horizons (his mum grew up in South America so he’s a major fan of spicy) and now I want to be sure that, when we get married, our guests enjoy a rich and flavourful meal.

I’ve got to say, now that I’ve got my priorities in check, I’m really excited to get cracking.

So what about you ladies? What would you say your “Top Three” priorities are?

Hmmm, hard to decide. Now that it’s after the fact, I can look back and see that my top priorities were 1) stationery, including the invitations, table numbers, programs, etc. 2) dress/jewelry, and 3) photography.

I spent so much time on the stationery, and almost as much choosing my outfit. And don’t get me started on the hours I spent researching photographers! Luckily, those three things turned out really, really well! (the snags happened with the tuxes, video, and to some extent coordination)

I would say my top three are photography, music and my bouquet. Not all the flowers, just my bouquet, because I’m crazy like that! I’m trying to let go a bit on the music though. I have this compulsion to basically control the entire playlist but I’m realizing it would be better to just have a must-play list and then let the DJ do his thing for the rest. Stationery may take over music in priority.

Our top three were:

1) Photography
2) Food
3) Venue (atmosphere)

A close 4th (at least from hubs’ POV) would be music, and for me, I *had* to have the dress I got. I considered that beyond a priority, tho’. It was non-negotiable!

1) Enjoying the party - I don’t want to be so stressed about anything that I don’t get to enjoy the event I’m spending so much time planning. I want it to be a happy low-stress day.

2) The dance floor - My fiance and I are both very into dancing, and so having a nice, smooth, non-sticky wood floor is of premium importance.

3) The food - and having time to eat it! :)

Great music, great food, and great people/atmosphere = Great wedding! Think about it. Normally when people complain about not liking a wedding, its because the food sucked, the DJ sucked, or the company was a big giant borefest.

1. photography - because lots of my relatives can’t come to NZ for the wedding

2. dress

3. venues - I majored in history so there had to be some historic connections! Our church is one of the best examples of wooden gothic architecture in the world and our reception venue is pretty old for NZ!

Tough to pick just 3!! Because we’re getting married in the college town where we met…
1) location
2) photography
3) chairs. A surprise, even to me, but come hell or high water — or a budget breaker — I’m getting different chairs or at least chair covers for the UGLY ones that come with the venue. It’s probably the only thing I’m not flexible on. Strange, but true…

1. venue
2. music
3. dress & photography- tie!

Am I the only one who doesn’t care too much about the food? Even though I LOVE eating out and trying new and awesome foods, I’m ok with my wedding food being just “pretty good”.

no emily - food was not that high a priority for me. honestly food at weddings is usually just ok, and that’s fine with me.

in retrospect, the most important things for me were 1) music, 2) flow of the event/organization (as handled by my doc’s), and hmmm i don’t know about #3 that was as important to me as the previous two. :)

1. Atomsphere of the venue- I want people to be having fun, I don’t want the DJ to be cheesy, and I want everyone to be really celebrating - not just going through the motions.

2. Ceremony- Even though the party is where the fun happens (and where we’ll be the longest) the ceremony is where the important stuff goes down. I’m only getting one chance to say my vows, so I’ve got to make sure I say them exactly as I want to. Plus, I’m really excited about our string trio playing Beatles songs during the ceremony :)

3. Dress- This is a big priority to me as well. I don’t want to be hot or uncomfortable, and I want to be able to look back on my pictures in 20 years and think I look terrible or dated.
