A Splash of Colour, or Why I Hate Beige

September 19th, 2007 @ 6:05 pm by Mrs. Hummingbird

As a teenager/twenty something, I took a job with Benjamin Moore to pay for my post-secondary education. At first, I was really happy about it, thinking that I could be creative and lend a visual eye to people’s home improvement projects. Unfortunately, what I came to find a few weeks into the job was that people don’t want creative. They want beige. Lots and lots of beige.

For every cool project I helped someone with (frescoing a ceiling red and gold, putting together a garden bedroom for a little girl), there were fifty more that just wanted “ecru” or “tan” or “off white,” which after a while, became kind of soul killing. I mean I’m not saying you have to paint everything lime green, but every so often, a splash of colour is therapeutic, you know?

Anyway, when it came to the wedding, an event where an overwhelming number of things are made to be white, offwhite or “champagne”*, I made Mr. Hummingbird promise me that we would have some colour somewhere, so this morning, when I went on a hunt for STD cards, I tried to pick out cool colourful ones to counteract my years of sensory deprivation at the hands of beige. Here are my results so far! Enjoy!

CHERRY-1
A little cherry blossom inspired one from ScissorPaperStone.

cranestd
Some sparkly cranes on a gold and chocolate background from Papyrus.

crystal-1
Flower and hummingbird motif from ScissorsPaperStone (okay it’s grey, which is just about as boring as beige but the hummingbird is cool so I liked it).

eatdrink
Funky coloured text from Saturate Design.

flowerstd
A burst of blue from Wedding Paper Divas (can you tell I like a nature-based motif?)

flowervasestd
A minimalist aqua and pink floral from Papyrus.

persimmonstd
A burnt orangey-red persimmon tree from Papyrus.

PETAL-1
Bold pink petals from ScissorsPaperStone. (This one comes in a few different colours, so if you have an aversion to Barbie’s favourite colour, no need to fear!)

reedflowerstd
Aqua and brown flowers and reed motif from Wedding Paper Divas (Not only very fresh looking but with a space for a shot of you and your sweetie).

spruce1
Awesome silkscreened branches from Spruce Avenue.

spruce2
Another branch silkscreen from Spruce if you’re looking for more of a Tiffany Blue.

saturateflower
A burst of bold warm colours from Saturate!

treestd
A fresh and clean looking lime green from Wedding Paper Divas
(okay, so maybe some things do need to be lime green . . .)

So what about you ladies? Any colour aversions/phobias? How are you adding a splash of colour to your big day?

* Most often than not, champagne is just a fancy word for beige.

I hate the look of hot pink and black together. It brings back bad memories of 80’s fashion haha.

Color used wisely is awesome! I knew that I did not want a white/off-white/champagne/ivory, etc. dress. Mine had color, and it sort of freaked my mom out at first. The original I wanted had red & gold, but since each is handmade from kimono fabric and subject to what fabrics are available, I had to go w/ a more pastel scheme. Which made Mommy a bit happier. =)

I like your hummingbird choice (I know, gray…but maybe you could add a little somethin’ somethin’ yourself by hand?) or the WPD blue & brown where you can have a photo.

Glamour this! by Kelly

I think color is the best invention in the world. I love pinks, greens and turquoise…what is a life without color? Boring!!!

I must confess, these days I’m really into taupe, greys, pure whites and black. Even though my wedding will have color, my dress is champagne with a taupe sash. Oh and not to mention the matching taupe shoes.

Choose color wisely but most importantly color that best represents the 2 of you!And you will see the outcome will be stunning! :D

You’d like me and my husband then, we live in an apartment, so we haven’t painted much, but we did paint one wall in our living room in Benjamin Moore’s “Caribbean Azure.” LOVE our deep blue wall. It’s different every hour of the day!

Our wedding is 7 weeks away (wow!) and our splash of color is ORANGE, which started off as an accent color and instead has become THE color :) All of the flowers are orange, the flower girl dress is tangerine, the tablecloths are a blood orange, etc.

Ha! I love your little footnote about champagne. When I first started planning and told my FMIL about the colors for the wedding (chocolate and champagne), she was trying to figure out what “champagne-colored” things look like. I told her it was basically beige. With a bit of sheen when it comes to dresses and material and stuff.

We’re throwing in punches of color with the centerpieces, which will be a soft shade of orange, and the bridesmaid’s bouquets which will be “sunset colors” like reds, pinks, and more oranges. But the chocolate contrasted against the champagne gives quite a pop all on it’s own.

hahaha…this reminds me of our house. We moved last year, and the first house was a sunny butter yellow. The kind I always thought old cute houses should be. Well, then the landlords repainted it, and chose stark, hospital, glaring, unexciting white. I don’t say this is the reason we moved, but it certainly didn’t look or feel like our sunny little home anymore. We moved into a newer home that was painted grey-blue. It sounds depressing, but looked cool and it was different from the other houses around us. Well, it needed painting too, and I begged the landlady to leave out white. Anything but white. What did we get? Beige. I think it was supposed to be caramel coffee or some such, but nope….a house by any other name is still beige. Sigh. Now it matches our beige (cringe) old-man car. My car is white. How did this happen?

I think I just may have to have an attack of color and paint something….anything.
