Fake Lashes

September 19th, 2007 @ 2:09 pm by Mrs. Caramel

First off, pardon my horrible dieting advice! I obviously am not an expert, and have never counted calories even though I know it’s logical. I used to eat Reeses Pieces first thing in the morning and was infamous in college for hating all fruits and veggies.  Eating Cheerios instead of my usual Ben & Jerry’s Coffee Heath Bar Crunch is pretty dang good for me.  So please listen to the experts!! :)

Back to the topic at hand, here are some tips on how to apply false eyelashes….

One way to learn how to do this correctly is simply by trial and error. Try using the same brand on your eyes a few times. You can apply them without the glue, as they should have a sticky residue, so you can check how and where to place them. You should also curl your lashes and put mascara on first - but don’t curl them too much because it’ll be difficult to place the false eyelashes if your real eyelashes are in the way.

As for brands, I’ve seen a few popular ones but these are my favorite:

ardelllash.jpg

They’re only $3.37 at your local drugstore! I recommend the ones that have different length lashes, rather than the ones that are all the same length. You can also cut them if they’re too long, but don’t cut them straight - you should cut them zig zagged like the lashes above.

Another tip is to not put the tip of the eyelash on the very inside corner of your eyelid. This causes pinching and you may start tearing. You should be able to flutter your eyelashes, close your eyes very tight and not feel any pain. If you can feel them when you open your eyes, they are not on correctly. You should not be able to feel them at all. Well of course you’ll feel that some foreign object is glued to your eyelid, but after awhile you should forget about them and not be bothered by it.

Remember to only put a small thin layer of glue on the lashes. Put a little bit more glue on the ends, so that your eyelash won’t go flying off the corner. Here’s my favorite lash glue brand, although I do think most of them are pretty much the same:

ardelllash2.jpg

I was supposed to use my roommate’s computer writing utensil for these diagrams but it’s not available to me right now. So this was all hand drawn on my mouse pad - sorry for the weird drawings!

Here’s the correct way to apply lashes. Place it in the middle of your eye, maybe a little bit closer to the end of your eye. You should put the lashes exactly where you usually put your eyeliner, and then I would go back and re-apply my eyeliner.

(The blue lines are the fake lashes) The red line shows you that the false lashes should be placed right above your real eyelashes.

Here’s the incorrect way. If you put the lashes too high above your natural eyelashes, you’ll create a Plastic Doll look.

example:

Again, here’s another attempt to draw the correct way. Your eyelashes should be sticking up naturally in the same way your real lashes do.

Hopefully this helps a little bit! I recommend strip lashes instead of the individual ones, mostly because you don’t want little pieces falling all over the place. With one strip, if the entire thing falls off, at least your one eye will look normal. Also, if your false eyelashes are being a serious pain, you can usually strip them off easily without a mirror.

I wouldn’t recommend applying multiple false lashes unless you’re pretty comfortable applying and wearing them. Make sure that each eyelash set is different - you don’t want to layer on the same exact ones.

Anyone have any questions? Maybe sometime later I can do a real life picture example!

Oh… and make sure you don’t end up looking like this! (unless you really want to icon_wink.gif)

Oh Miss Caramel, are you just trying to talk us all out of wearing those last feather lashes because that is your planned wedding look? LOL! :)

I recommend practice, practice, practice. I am an individual lash girl myself but haven’t worn false lashes in a few years so bought some lashes in August for practice runs before my January wedding. False lashes can be a lot fun.

I didn’t end up using false lashes for my wedding, but I did learn how to apply them with these helpful videos from makeup artist Tricia Sawyer.

do you have any favorite style numbers from ardell? they have so many kinds that it’s hard to find one that works for you without a lot of trial and error… i always forget to remember which ones i like.

i don’t really have that much experience with strip lashes, but i used to be addicted to the individual cluster lashes from ardell. they make such a difference!! :)

I wore lashes on my big day, against my makeup artists original advice. Many of the store brands will have to be trimmed a bit so they look natural, but that’s pretty easy. Also, my make up artists taught me that if you put them on incorrectly, or simply not perfectly on center, you can just draw a dark link (with black liner) from the inside corner of your eye to where the lashes start, and the problem is fixed! They look INCREDIBLE in photos too!

aww miss caramel don’t feel bad about your previous post! It was obvious to me that you were just trying to be helpful by sharing what worked for you, and who knows, maybe someone else will be able to benefit from the advice you gave. Good job with your weight loss so far and good luck!

Hi Miss Caramel,

Awesome post. For someone who has sensitive eyelids (clogged pores and weak eyelashes), are false eyelashes a good idea? Any alternatives to make real eyelashes pop in pics?

Haha everyone is so funny. TheMDBride, I would not recommend you using fake lashes because it can be pretty irritable for people who have sensitive eyelids! This is just my opinion, but I’d rather be safe than sorry! You wouldn’t want a bad reaction or a rash or red eyes on your wedding day!
I’m sure you will look beautiful with or without the fake lashes!

Thanks for the post - I’ve always wanted to learn how to do my own fake lashes. Everytime I try - the lashes get stuck on the tweezers rather than on my lids.

Also, you shouldn’t feel bad about your prior post. You were just sharing what worked for you. I think the other commenters, such as myself, wanted to be informative as well (rather than to be critical of your suggestions). Hope I didn’t sound harsh…I apologize, if I did.

The videos Mrs. Ant posted are fun to watch. I wish the models weren’t wearing so much eye makeup already, though, because it was hard to see a before/after difference.

I wear fake lashes almost every day and I also use the ardell brands. I have different ones for going out at night and for every day wear. The going out ones that look great in photos are #101 Demi and #105. For every day I like #110 or #117. I really don’t think you can go wrong as long as they are not the crazy ones that are obviously for costumes.

Unlike Miss Caramel I do not like to put on mascara until after the lashes as I find that it helps blend the two together.

Also a tip that I have is to hold the eyelash with both hands (thumb and forefinger on each end) and put the inner corner down first and then you’ll be able to line it up as close to your lash line as possible.

I also found that the “felt tip” kind of eyeliner works best with lining the strip of the lash (after you’ve put it on) so that you can’t tell that you are wearing fake lashes.

So “right above” means like laying it flush on top of your natural eyelashes? Sorry I’m such a dunce! I always end up with doll lashes!

Instead of fake I suggest using one of the lash conditioners out there. I highly recommend a product called Massive lash - I used it and in 4 weeks my lashes were out of control - no need for fakes. People stop me on the street about them. So worth the $!

A friend recommended Thi Cosmetic’s lashes - I tried them and I’ve never looked back. They’re specifically made for Asian gals in mind since we tend to have shorter lashes but my caucasian friends with dark hair have also fallen in love with them. Check em out!!

Thanks so much, Miss Caramel!!! Your opinion helps since I’m a novice with makeup and such. Look forward to your future posts.

Wow I would LOVE to use Massive Lash! Too bad they’re expensive and that it takes 21+ days to work… wedding is sooner than that, eek!!! But good to know in the future!

As for the type of lashes, I like Ardell’s Demure, Classic and Tender for the natural look. The 122’s are pretty cool if you’re going out at night and want a dramatic look. There’s a million different types here!
