About Mrs. Penguin

One Saturday in January, Mr. Penguin dropped down on one knee on a rainy beach and asked me to marry him. The next Sunday we had a comprehensive gift registry at Williams Sonoma.

Now before you rush to call me greedy, please understand: we had been living together for two years, and always intended to get married. And weddings naturally come with wedding things, like knives, blenders, mixers, dishes. So for two years, we survived on the very basics: a dull set of knives that I bought from Overstock.com and an Ikea kitchen “starter set,” that comes with everything you need to…let’s just say… make your food not be raw anymore.

Now, I like to cook. Not just boil water and toss a salad kind of cook, but REALLY cook. Braise, whip, puree, sear, deglaze, temper, you name it, I’ll do it. But there are just some things you can’t do without the right tools. Like make banana bread without a mixer (it’s called a “banana brick”), or braise beef without a heavy pot.

But I’m an adventurous cook, and I’ll try to modify any recipe, even if I don’t have the right tools. But sometimes it just doesn’t work out. And last spring I had a nervous breakdown and we finally went out and bought a blender.

So you can imagine my excitement when I realized that:

1) I’m engaged!

2) We can register!

Our registry experience at Williams Sonoma (Union Square, San Francisco) wasn’t exactly as blissful as I thought it would be, even though we were at the creme de la creme of Williams Sonoma stores in Union Square San Francisco. So here’s how the day went:

Yes, I'll Marry You, Let's Register! : wedding registry sacramento Wsunion
image from www.unionsquareshop.com

We arrived to an employee at the door mumbling something about “the fourth floor” to us. So we awkwardly found our way to the fourth floor to join about 6 other couples also signing up to register. We sat down with perhaps the only helpful employee on staff that day, and he asked us “when is your wedding date?” to which we replied, “We haven’t set our date yet. We just got engaged last weekend.” Apparently he’d only met one other couple that had registered before even knowing when their wedding date was. Well, some people shop venues first, some people dream about finally owning a Le Creuset Oval Dutch Oven. :)

After a reception of orange juice and coffee, we were sent off with those fun scanners and beeped away to our heart’s content. Lots of the products there didn’t have bar codes or even regular codes to punch into the scanner, and it was really hard to find an employee who knew how to use the scanners, or register for items that didn’t have a scanner bar code.

Finally when we sat back down to enter our 4 hours of hard work into their computer, there was apparently some glitch and there was a good possibility that none of the stuff we entered into our scanners could be entered into their central system. Luckily, they did eventually get the items into the computer, but not before they told us that we’d better go back around the store and WRITE DOWN the items that we’d like to register for, so that we could later go on line and register for them on the website.

We left feeling a little cheated out of our experience. I mean, isn’t this one of the most exciting parts of getting married? Running around the store with the scanner? Beep! Bread Box! Beep Beep! Garlic mincer! But we felt like we were a burden on the store employees, those evil engaged couples that force the store to open early 2 Sundays a month and force the employees out of bed 3 hours earlier.

So that was that. 1 registry down, 2 to go. We’ve since registered at Crate and Barrel (more on that later), and plan for our 3rd registry to be at the new flagship Bloomingdales in San Francisco.

Where are you registered? Was running around with those guns everything you dreamed it would be?

Love the title of this post! Everything we read told us not to register until we got closer to our July date. I guess there are sales and discontinued items and then Christmas. So we waited until after the new year. We had fun too, but then hit a wall and said…enough shopping…time for sugar!

We registered with Macy’s and REI. We loaded up on camping gear. But after Macy’s, we didn’t have a whole lot of oomph left.

We received two fancy platinum place settings that we’ve used all of three times in the last two years. If we had to do it over again, we probably wouldn’t put those on there. But everything else was really cool.

And I know what you mean about expecting something to be cool and fun and then finding out it was so much of the former or the latter. I had a bridal bubble burst on me when I went dress shopping. Being engaged is like a ticket into this whole wedding subculture that is geared toward making you feel really good. So when something goes the other way, it’s a much bigger deal than it would be otherwise.

Good luck with the rest of your registering!

Miss Penguin, would you mind sharing what kind of pots and pans you registered for? Did you do all Le Creuset, or did you get some All Clad and/or Calphalon too? My fiance and I need to register soon, and I have no idea what kind of pots and pans we should get. I’m not a cook at your level, but I do enjoy cooking, so I’d like some sturdy, long-lasting, easy-to-clean cookware to make things easier.

ChicagoSarah- Thanks for inspiring my next post! I’ll be happy to share what I registered. Just a quick rundown for you (i’ll write a big post on what exactly we registered for)

Main pots and pans - All Clad Stainless Steel. 2 pans, 3 pots, one deep saute pan. (we didnt register for the full line, we thought it was unnecessary, but mostly because we dont have the space!)

2 le creuset pots - 1 braiser, 1 dutch oven (I’m a stew FREAK so these should get used a lot)

1 grill pan (le creuset) to sear/grill meats in the winter when its too cold to barbecue

Henckles Knives - Full set. Henckles are kind of the “midgrade” knives that williams sonoma offers. still a little pricey for my taste, but I’ve got so many blisters from the knives I have now, I know better than to register for a cheaper set.

As far as appliances, we only registered for a few. Coffee maker, food processor, kitchenaid mixer.

Again, I’ll write up a big post about our registry and why we chose what we did. HTH!

My biggest suggestion is to BUY THINGS THAT YOU CAN PUT IN THE DISHWASHER!!! Lots of nonstick pans are handwash only…BLAH! You’ll thank yourself later when you’ve got tons of dishes to do and only 2 hands to do them :)

My fiance and I were just at Williams Sonoma and Crate and Barrel this weekend in Union Square. He loves the Shun knives but they are so dang expensive!!!! He wants us to register at Crate & Barrel.

Also, how do you sign up for that Sunday morning registry?

OMG, I **heart** my Le Creuset Oval Oven!! I longed for that and a Kitchen Aid stand mixer. We managed to get them by returning some things we got that weren’t on the registry and using gift cards. And sucking it up and contributing a little cash on our own — our gift to ourselves!

We didn’t do the scanner thing. We thought we would, but it was in the middle of holiday shopping season, so it was too nuts to attempt. We registered entirely online at WS, C&B and CB2 (a funkier offshot of Crate & Barrel). I am sad I missed out on the scanner gun, tho’. Boo…maybe when we get a house of our own!

We registered online first, then went into the stores to finish the registries. By doing things in this sequence, we got VIP treatment when we walked in the door, and we collected our registration goodies without having to listen to the long sales pitches.

Le Creuset rocks!

C - Um, I mean Miss Penguin: are we the same person??? I loved you before, but now - oh girl, we must go shopping together. We had a similar experience at the Macy’s in Union Square. Eyes rolled when we said we didn’t have a date yet! We should get together and cook, and open a bottle of red!

MWAHAHAHAHA I dare you to come to Australia! I’m American, so of course I expected that when we registered, we’d get the cool scan gun. Nope. Not how things work here. They give you a folder full of forms and a pen. And you walk around writing stuff down.

For every item, you have to record:
* department code
* store’s item reference number
* barcode number
* item brand
* item style or name
* item color or pattern
* item size
* item description
* number of items desired
* item price

For every…single…item.

My hand cramped up. We only registered for 43 items (small destination wedding with an AHR, so we’re not having a major event), and it took us 5 hours to traipse all over the store and record everything.

We registered at a major department store, so it’s not like this is because we were at some little podunk store, either. When we were given the forms, I asked why they didn’t use the scanners, and the consultant just shrugged and said that no department stores here want to have to set up the computer systems.

We came across another couple who were registering. As they were having a much bigger wedding than us, they had several hundred items on their list. The guy told me they’d been working on their registry at that store for 3 days. THREE FREAKIN’ DAYS.

I love this country with all my heart. But seriously - they need to get some scanners, LOL!

Sorry it wasn’t all you thought it was going to be. We registered at a Crate & Barrel event they do in late winter (gifts for the couple, access to the store an hour prior to its opening, and they cook breakfast for you). We went to a Williams & Sonoma nearby that is not as huge as the Union Square one and they also cooked us breakfast and the store manager hung out with us. They didn’t have a couple of things out we wanted and she found their codes to manually enter into our registry.

We aren’t registering for much and went for the breakfasts, and the experience mostly. We are also registered at REI for backpacks and insect repellent.

Does this bother anyone else?

I registered at Crate and Barrel (and William Sonoma has this problem also) because they had the everyday dishes I wanted. But then you end up registering for other stuff that you could get the exact same product much cheaper elsewhere. Which makes me feel like people are going to look at my registry and think - a $6 spoon! I could get this at BB&B for a buck!

But then, do you have a BB&B registry filled with $1 spoons? That’s adding a whole ‘nother registry to the mix.

What did you guys do?

I skipped williams sonoma and went to bb&b. I love william’s sonoma (so pretty!) but didn’t really consider registering because it is a bit pricey. If your guests can afford it that’s awesome, but most of mine were either family helping pay for the wedding, or flying in from others states to be there. So we went with a more affordable option.

Sorry this wasn’t so much fun for you. Our bubble burst when we realized - if we put this on the resgistry are we going to find one we like better somewhere else? We had a lot of scanner’s remorse ;) Which is why its so cool that you can modify those little buggers online.

We registered at Crate & Barrel and BB&B. It was exhausting. (We went to C&B one week on a Saturday, and followed up at BB&B later that week on a weeknight.) But I have to say that the Crate & Barrel folks were exact opposite of most people you met at your W&S store, Miss Penguin. They were OVERLY helpful, to the point where I almost wanted to tell one of them to just go away already. She was slowing us down! :D

Our W&S here in KC (on the Plaza) isn’t that pleasant of a place to shop, so it didn’t even enter my mind as an option for registering.

And I agree with cs who mentioned above that we were able to find comparable items at BB&B that were more reasonably priced than they were at C&B, and I was fine with having those things on the registry there. C&B is for the big stuff: the pots and pans, the really nice towels, certain pieces of furniture, and all of our china. BB&B was for more practical items, including mixers, knives (we’re Global users), and the sheets we love.

Wait, I can’t believe that you have to freakin go online and RE-register for everything!?! That makes NO sense whatsoever!! We had a good experience with both Crate & Barrel and Macy’s.

We only registered at BB&B. I love shopping so I thought it was going to be fun, but honestly it really wasn’t fun. We both were overwhelmed by the amount of items they had. We were also nervous about adding big ticket items, so yeah, the whole experience was stressful for us.

Yeah, we got stressed about big ticket items too. Is it because we’re taught not to ask for too much or that expecting someone to buy (or consider buying) a six hundred dollar vacuum cleaner seems crass? I don’t know, but we only put one or two on there and then then had a better time with the small stuff.

Scanner’s remorse…hahahaha. That’s it exactly!

I love to COOK too and I am amazed that you prepared meals without the proper cooking tools!!! No matter what store I go to - I head for the kitchen/dining area first! I think my registry will be made up of “upgrades” to what I have already and like you it’ll be a mix of pieces that we like best rather than a whole set.

Yeah - I though I was the only one who found it a bit disappointing. We went to Sur La Table and got a lackluster reception from the sales lady, no instruction, my fiance would not let go of the gun, and everything we went home to add online was unavailable!
