Color Scheming

September 20th, 2007 @ 1:42 pm by Mrs. Penguin

Picking wedding colors was quick and almost painless. It went a little something like this:

Me: “Hey mom, I want to have black bridesmaids dresses, that way it will be easy to find affordable dresses.”

Mom: “No. Your wedding is in summer, you can’t have black dresses.”

Me: “Yes I can, you’re not the boss of me.”

Mom: “Damn straight I’m the boss of you. I put you in this world and I can take you OUT!”

Me: “Fine then, I want grey.”

Mom: “Grey is good.”

So without further ado, I present our wedding palette.

Color Scheming : wedding sacramento themes ColorpaI’m a grey freak. Grey is next year’s chocolate brown, I swear it! Fashion Trendsetter has grey right smack at the top of their “2008 women’s color trends.”

I loovvvveee grey too! Those Melissa Sweet BM dresses (you know the ones, all over the weddings mags? Yeah, those) are enough to turn anyone into a grey-aholic! Love the other colors you chose too!

That’s a beautiful palette! Very pleasant on the eyes!

I didn’t pick colors… other than BLACK everything… except for the flower… which are all red and before you knew it… red was finding it’s way throughout the wedding… :)

I always dreamed of a wedding with cool colors, preferably ice blue and white. Fast forward to getting engaged and trying to find a place to get married (that wasn’t a hotel ballroom and wasn’t a banquet hall). We must have looked at 40+ venues online, before finally stumbling on one that seemed perfect, an old historic woman’s club.

Imagine my delight when I walked into the two story ballrooom that had ice blue walls with white woodwork and frames. Add an accent color of navy and…ta da - my wedding colors!

I always wanted be “different” and have chocolate BM dresses, and then 2 months after I got married, the whole world went chocolate brown. Sad.

That’s the same conversation my friend had with her mom about black bridesmaid dresses. How funny!

For colors my guy and I didn’t have anything in mind. We love color, but to pick only a few and then they had to go together? It seemed too difficult to make that choice at the time.

A few months later I threw a wedding shower for my boss at a local restaraunt and brought in a bunch of cool items: gift basket, frame, home made cake etc. I didn’t know what their wedding colors were, so I just grabbed two colors that I thought looked nice (dark red and pale green) and seemed to be everywhere at the moment.

We never gave it much thought after that, but when it came time to pick flowers and research invitations, those two colors came back to me. By the time our wedding rolled around though, those colors were “done”. It made it a little harder to find items that matched our colors, so we switched the main colors: pale green would be the main color with dark red as the accent. Really, the only place it showed was in my bridesmaid’s dress and the invitations.

I’m having much trouble figuring out my color scheme! Eight months away, and I’m still not quite sure. In part, I’m backing away from trends, cause I want to be different. Then again, I like to be trendy. I love the color blue, and I guess I always dreamed of using that, but my sister, being my best friend and matron of honor, used blue as her main color for her wedding two years ago, and I’m afraid since she and I are so similar, our weddings will be too similar if I use straight blue.

I’m getting married outside against a dramatic backdrop of red-orange rocks. My instinct says green and blue with orange accents. But I keep getting stuck on the shades….

Well, the bridesmaid dresses need to get figured pretty soon, and maybe then all will be clear!

Miss Penguin, I do think your color combo will be really fun to work with! I love that aqua!

I picked Sage because it was the only color both my mother and fiance agreed on!

We’re doing a black and white wedding, which I somehow just knew was right without thinking about it at all. My mother ALSO told me that I couldn’t possibly put bridesmaids in floor-length black dresses for a May wedding, but you know what? I don’t care. Black is never a bad choice for a black-tie affair. As I told my mother, unless she was planning on paying for the bridesmaid dresses (she isn’t), then why should she dictate the color?

At first, I just wanted to have a fall wedding with my bridesmaid and groomsman in brown. As I was decided on what to do for invitations, everything just started to get crazy. We have a base of brown (the guys suit, the flower girl, tablescloths, etc) and orange (pumpkins, the color of the cupcake tree, and the guys’ ties). However, all the bridesmaids are wearing different colors, hunter green, deep red, and brown (supposed to be orange). There are leaves everywhere. We are also doing an arch with leaves, copper organza, and the colors of the bridesmaid dresses. It’s going to be an explosion of color, and I hope it won’t be too much.

LOL that’s hilarious! I’d watch my back if I were you and order fancy corsages! ;) Anyway, I’ve had the HARDEST time choosing colors. It’s been four months since I’ve been engaged and I still can’t choose!!

I have had a favorite (”signature?”) color my whole life, and it would not have occurred to me to look for another color.

Our colors were very similar to yours! They were grey and seafoam green (sometimes more green, sometimes more aqua…). I wanted black dresses at first to and my Mom had the exact same reaction as yours! In the end we went the seafoam green route, with grey ribbon, and I thought they looked very nice! Good luck with the palette. It will be lovely!

LOVE IT! Those colors look great together. I also love grey. I’m on a hunt for a fabulous grey handbag at the moment.

i, too, love grey. and love that you spelled it that way. i’ve seen some awesome grey/white/yellow, grey/red, grey/taupe/purple, grey/insert pop-y color here images all over.

i ended up adding grey at the end to my red/aqua wedding in a very teeny tiny amount (the BM dresses had it as an accent).

My FI didn’t want to wear a tux at all, so they guys will be in navy jackets with navy and white seersucker pants, white shirts, and pink ties. The girls are wearing navy dresses from JCrew with a pink sash. Perfectly crisp and summery.
