Custom Coaster Favors

September 20th, 2007 @ 11:30 pm by Mrs. Penguin

We were originally going to give out bottles of Prosecco etched with our new monogram as favors, but we were concerned that since the bottles were so big, they would take away from the centerpieces at the tables. I also didn’t want to put someone in charge of handing out bottles at the end of the night if we didn’t just leave them on the tables for our guests. At $4-5 per bottle, it wasn’t a bad deal, but it was a logistical nightmare.

I had seen these fabulous coasters from Snow & Graham on HuckleberryKarenDesigns’ blog:

…but at $13 per set, they were cost prohibitive. So you know what that means! Time to craft my butt off! I scoured the Internet for the best deal on blank pulp board coasters and found the fabulous folks at the American Coaster Company, who print custom coasters, but also will sell you blanks at fabulous prices. I bought 1000 medium weight round 3.5 inch coasters for $17.

Each guest at the wedding will receive a box of 10 printed floral coasters with grey and tiffany blue ink, somewhat similar to those above.

…and yes, I did say that 1000 coasters cost $17. My favors will probably cost under $60 to make (I also have to use Riso Ink, Gocco screens and flash bulbs, Kraft boxes from The Paper Mart, DF Satin ribbon, and a custom printed seal for the box belly band).

The coasters and boxes are in the mail! Stay tuned for some craft mania within the next few weeks! Here’s some more inspiration:

My brain just went haywire with all of the funny little sayings with the word “coast” in them. :)

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of coaster favors…where did you get this idea?

Good luck in your crafty endeavors!

that’s so cute! I love the designs! as I’ve never used a riso gocco, does the ink run if it gets wet? It would be awful for the coasters to leak colour on a cold drink :(

tetleytee - Gocco ink for paper is oil based so it shouldnt be a problem, however, just to be safe, I’ll seal them with hairspray (aerosol)…that should do the trick!

Glamour this! by Kelly

What a neat idea. And at that price, you can buy thousands!
These would also be great for a hostess gift!

For your sanity, may I suggest avoiding designs (like the bottom two) which would easily show bad alignment?

Miss Penguin, could you do a tutorial on these, or explain to me how you plan to make them? I am interested in the idea of these favors.

Hi Shortgirl - I actually did a BeeTV Video Broadcast showing how I made them…If you click on the “BeeTV” tab near the top of the page, and after the BeeTV window loads up, you can click on the “view archives” button (it looks like a little square grid) and a calendar will pop up. Navigate to December 17, 2007 at 11:00PM and you will see me make these step by step! Have fun watching!
