I’ve Got A New Attitude…

September 24th, 2007 @ 2:01 pm by Mrs. Onion

Cue the music. I kid — but I do have a new hair cut by a fabulous Venezuelan guy called Gabriel — see results:

Mr. Onion and I got back from our honeymoon late Saturday night and we spent much of Sunday procrastinating laundry, unpacking, finding our tiny apartment which has been swallowed by wedding boxes and chaos and food shopping. Yeah — we did NONE of these things.

Instead we relaxed, pretended we were still on our honeymoon, uploaded all our honeymoon photos, organized some of our non-pro wedding pics (will start sharing soon, I promise), caught up on our on-line reading and had dinner with one of my fabulous bridesmaids whose birthday we missed while we were away.

We spent 12 days in Curacao, a beautiful Dutch island next to Aruba. We enjoyed stunning beaches, great food and were so well taken care of by our friend and his family. I thought I’d take it day by day, so here we go.

Here we are at LaGuardia Airport first thing Monday morning after our wedding. We were clearly very tired — hopefully we’ll begin to look more rested and less pale as the trip continues. We arrived late on Monday night, unpacked, ate dinner and went straight to bed as we were exhausted.

Day 1: See my post from the end of our first day. Yes, I brought my laptop on our honeymoon — mostly to store our photos from our digital camera, but we discovered we had Internet in our rooms — how could a bee resist?

Day 2: Our second day there was actually rainy and overcast so we took the opportunity to head into town as it wasn’t perfect beach weather. I came across a beautiful pearl necklace by Yvel we couldn’t afford, but a girl can dream, so of course I took a picture of it.

We explored Kura Hunlanda, a beautiful hotel and walked over the foot bridge from Punda to Otrabonda.

Day 3: The weather was back to being stunning so we headed back to the beach at our lovely hotel, Avila Beach Hotel. We read, relaxed, swam, made friends with two iguanas and ate a yummy lunch at the beach bar. This was a typical day in paradise! One of the books I read while on our trip was Bitter is the New Black by Jen Lancaster. It was absolutely perfect beach reading — hysterical and entertaining. Also check out her blog.

I’m getting next September and recently started looking at Aruba as a possibility, but wasn’t sure about hurricanes and such. Does it get affected there by them at all? And would you recommend it as a honeymoon destination?

I LOVE Jen Lancaster! I have read Bitter is the New Black and Bright Lights, Big Ass. Loved them both. You should check out her second book too. Sounds like you had a fantastic honeymoon!

I’m glad others have read Jen Lancaster’s books. I’m looking forward to reading Bright Lights as well. I borrowed Bitter from my bridesmaid and she has Bright Lights but hasn’t read it yet. She has a FIRM rule that no one can read one of her books before she has! Totally understand.

As for the hair cut — it felt GREAT to cut it. I’d been growing it out for well over a year first because I wanted to save some money and then for the wedding. It was nice to feel light and free!

alli — I’ve never bene to Aruba. I do know there hasn’t been a hurricane in Curacao in over 45 years. There have been some close calls, but the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao) are pretty safe. I’d highly recommend where we were — there are also some more restort type hotels on the island if that interests you more. Ours was a small boutique hotel — about 70 rooms.

Just last night we started looking at Curacao for our honeymoon! I love the photos. I’m so glad you were happy with it. Was the shopping and the food good? Did you feel like you had plenty to do? Is that hotel pretty remote or in the middle of things? We are going to stay at a Marriott or the new Renaissance that is opening because of all of our Marriott points, but I would love all the info I can get! It looks beautiful.

natalie — Some parts of Curacao are run down and some are lovely. What we loved is that there are very few American tourists so it feels even more remote, but everyone speaks English as well as Dutch.

There were many shops in town although we didn’t buy anything. If you’re looking for a high adventure vacation I’m not sure Curacao is it. But they do have casinos, a beach dance club called Mambo that is fun, a seaquarium where we swam with dolphins, an ostrich farm and nice beaches.

The food was quite good — we had an amazing meal at Jaipur at Kura Hulanda in Otrabonda. Best Indian food I’ve ever had. Also great ribs at the Ribs Factory, a nice Italian Restaurant (can’t remember the name) and great stir fry dish and chocolate mousse at the Gouverneur.

Our hotel was fairly remote although we could walk into town in about 20 minutes. It’s called the Avila Beach Hotel and the prices were very competitive while feeling pretty luxurious. I haven’t seen the Marriott but heard, while we were there, that the Rennaissance was being opened. If you have points I’m sure that would be the way to go. You can check Avila Hotel out at: http://www.avilahotel.com. Let me know if I can help with anything else. If you call to make a reservation at Avila (or inquire about prices) their 800 number will direct you to a guy called Sam. Tell him Lindsey (who just honeymooned there) recommended you call…you never know. Let me know if I can help in any other way. It was a very relaxing vacation!

Francis — the salon is in Curacao so if you plan on flying there any time soon, you’re all set! But if you’re serious I can find out ;)

That was so helpful, thank you! I don’t think we are looking for high adventure, mostly beaches, pools and walking around. I will definitely add the Avila to our list. Ahhh… I can’t wait!
