My First Wedding Related Decision

September 24th, 2007 @ 1:02 pm by Mrs. Hummingbird

As Mr. Hummingbird and I have friends of both sexes, it seemed wrong we would pick attendants just based on sex, so we decided to be a little unconventional in this regard. Therefore, he picked BIL Hummingbird and his friend Sarah as his Best Man and Best Lady and I picked SIL Hummingbird and my friend Greg as my Maid of Honor and Man of Honor.

Although I was very happy with this idea, this made things a little tricky for me since, not only did it mean that I had to dress my Maid of Honor but Mr. Hummingbird’s Best Lady as well. After all, they’re two completely different people with two completely different body types.

However, having thought things through and scoured the Internet for appropriate bridal wear, I came across this dress and fell in love with it:

Not only is the dress an amazing color, but the shape of it isn’t too unconventional or unflattering and it looks light enough that it won’t be too hot for a summer wedding. Plus I absolutely love the multi-strand necklace of the translucent beads and plan on styling the girls in the same way by hitting one of the many bead shops in Toronto, and stringing together the loops myself since I used to make jewelery.

So, what do you think? Did I pick well?

That’s too funny, my bridesmaid just picked that dress yesterday! It’s absolutely gorgeous in person. The picture doesn’t do the fabric, detailing, and color justice!

That dress is beautiful. The way the fabric is bunched in the mid-section and the symmetry flatter a lot of different body types. You picked well :)

Love it! And what fun to mix up the genders a little….

I was once a bridesmaid in a wedding that had one “groomswoman,” and she was my partner on the groom’s side. It was hilarious doing some of the cheesy traditions with a twist, like the photo of the groomsmen keeling on one knee and the bridesmaids sitting on the other — especially as I was about twice her height and was afraid I’d crush her! And in college ballroom dance I was always stuck dancing the guys’ part because we didn’t have enough men and I’m tall, so at least I knew how to lead during the wedding party dance… ;-)

I think it depends on what the bridesmaid looks like. The dress by itself is very pretty…but if either woman has a larger chest or flabby arms then strapless can be a nightmare. As long as it fits their shape it’s a good pick, if it doesn’t then even the prettiest dress will look bad.

Great idea to mix-up tradition! If you want to simplify the wording on your program, one idea is to write “Standing with The Bride” and “Standing with The Groom” in lieu of multiple categories for your attendants.

The designer is Lazaro. I just looked at a different one of their dresses last week. The pictures on the website really don’t do justice to the beauty of the fabric and detailing of these dresses in person; I was really surprised by the difference. They run on the expensive side for bridesmaid dresses, fyi: like $250-350.

pretty dress! i really like the ruching on the side.

i think how well it flatters just depends on your friends’ body type- i recently went BM dress fitting with my girls and some of them are not as tall or thin as models- so the strapless tea length dresses with detailing at the waist made them look even wider. =(
