To Steal Or Not To Steal?

September 24th, 2007 @ 6:45 pm by Mrs. Spider

When I saw Katherine Heigl wearing a white mermaid gown on the red carpet at the recent Emmys, I thought - hello, wedding gown! Incidentally, the babe is planning her own nuptials so maybe she does have wedding on the brain. Her dress costs something like $1 million dollars and your left pinky but the crafty folks at eDressMe say this gown can be your friend for just $475.

Some other finds:

Channel your inner Eva for $325.

emmy_awards_america_ferrera_08edressme_america

America for $328.

And lastly, a yellow blast from the past, Reese it up for just $198.

All these knockoffs are great but could you, would you, do it? Imagine having two Evas and a Reese show up to your wedding?

Haha, sure I would. I figure the chances of dressing the same as another guest are about the same as if you pick up a dress at J.Crew!

Ha ha…left pinky…who needs a pinky anyway when you’ve got the perfect dress! =)

My hubs always says, “It’s the girl in the dress, not the dress itself” that looks awesome. I second that thought! (I wasn’t really that taken w/ any of the Emmy fashions this year…)

I’m torn on this issue. I mean, let me first start off by saying that my wedding dress is a designer knock off - instead of paying $7,000 for my gown I’m paying $700. And to be honest, the workmanship is better than the designer’s. I just couldn’t justify paying $7K on one day (sorry). However, as an advocate of artist rights, I do think that some how artists should be compensated when someone literally knocks off a design. The person who should pay? The knock off manufacturer. Just my thoughts - but a highly controversial subject.

Access Hollywood also profiled the knockoffs created by Faviana (prom and formal dresses). I was AMAZED because these were released 24 hours after the Emmys and they look great!

Katherine Heigl’s dress for $278
Ali Larter’s red Reem Acra for $300
America’s blue Monique Lhullier for $328
Eva Longoria’s Swarovski for $350

Interestingly, clothing and clothing patterns can not be copyrighted. Therefore, it is not stealing to make knock-offs of designer clothing.

Good point MOBethany! Fashion design copyrights are limited and extremely hard to get (read more here: http://www.copyright.gov/docs/regstat072706.html). Fabric designs and patterns, however, can be copyrighted. [I used to work for an IP firm doing trademark and copyright litigation). Legal or not, it is still a “steal” of the look, no?

The knockoff prices aren’t that good for the quality they appear in these photos.

I agree with Moi -the dresses look cheap. The Reese knock-off isn’t too bad, but the Katherine Heigl one looks like it’s made of cheap material and like it would fit terribly. The America Ferrara dress was gorgeous mostly because of its amazing fit, which I don’t see here. Doesn’t seem worth it to me.

Definitely okay in my book to go for a “knock off” of a designer gown…if you’re comfortable with the look, the quality and the price then go for it!
