Geeky Proposals

September 25th, 2007 @ 5:01 pm by Mrs. Peony

As Mr. Peony and I are both huge geeks, we can’t help but be smitten by geeky proposal stories. So here are our top three favorite geeky proposals:

3. Dashboard Widget Proposal

Earlier this year, a Mac geek created a Dashboard Widget (which, according to Apple, are “mini-applications that let you perform common tasks and provide you with fast access to information”) to propose to his girlfriend. When she was using his computer, he told her to hit F12 and an image of a ring popped out with the words “Will you marry me?”

Needless to say, she said yes, and all (Mac) geeks rejoiced. You can get more details on this proposal here.

2. The Joy of Tech! Proposal

Both Mr. Peony and I subscribe to The Joy of Tech!, a geek comic strip. Here is their idea of a proposal….and I love it! I really would’ve been swept off my feet if any guy had done this.

1. The Apple Store Proposal

Last summer, Apple opened its famous Fifth Ave store in Manhattan (can you tell Mr. Peony and I are Mac fans? Geeky Proposals : wedding new york Winky2 winky ). In celebration of the grand opening, Apple set a website with time lapse photos in front of the store. This man took three signs with him to the location at 5:30am and proceeded to propose to his girlfriend on camera:

Mr. Peony had originally planned on a geeky proposal as well. In fact, he later confessed to me that he had been thinking about doing a Dashboard Widget proposal when we read about the one above. Later on, when he was in the process of purchasing my engagement ring, his first choice was to propose to me at the Fifth Ave Apple Store. He had planned on talking to an employee beforehand so that the proposal can happen during a class/demonstration, or pre-installed in one of the store’s machines that he would lead me to. However, our timing was off - this happened at the end of June, which was when the iPhone launched. When Mr. Peony called the store to talk to an employee about his plans, they told him that they were too busy with the iPhone launch and that they couldn’t accommodate him. I was sure that Mr. Peony would propose to me through an online ad at one of the websites I visit every day, because he works at an online marketing company. However, the actual proposal came as a complete surprise and was very intimate, not geeky at all…

For the game geeks out there, one of the founders of Penny Arcade, Mike Krahulik, proposed to his then girlfriend Kara through a comic on his website. Insanely cute. I have an autographed copy, hehe.

My fiance proposed with a digital photo frame that he gave me for Christmas. He put some photos of us and ones I had taken and put them into slideshow mode with the last one saying “Will You Marry Me?”
He’s an electrical engineer and when i told my parents, they’re response was, “how electrical of him!”
It was slightly geeky, but very sweet and endearing. :)
