About Mrs. Penguin

Oh My, It’s So Big!

September 25th, 2007 @ 2:00 pm by Mrs. Penguin

Mr. Penguin overestimated the chubbiness of my fingers. So they’re a little on the plump side, but my sausages are still smaller than he anticipated. We recently popped in a jewelry store just to check out our wedding ring options, and I had them take my ring size…turns out I’m almost a whole size smaller than my engagement ring.

For some reason I’m really reluctant to resize my ring. What if I move to more humid climates? What if I gain weight? The ring is ridiculously big in dry climates, but fits a little better when there’s significant moisture in the air.

For now, I hate how the solitaire never sits up straight. Plus, now that the cold dry weather is rolling in, my fingers are shrinking even more…its getting to the point where I sometimes wear my ring on my middle finger or thumb, especially when I’m working.

I could wear a Ring Snuggies,

Or I could just suck it up and actually resize my ring.  Did you resize your engagement ring?

No I was lucky he had been listening to my random talk over the years and he know my ring size.
Get it resized because on your actual wedding day everyone will be looking at that hand!

Are there stones in your band or is it a plain metal band? I would just resize it if there are no stones. Its not worth it to worry about it or have it huge and slip off somewhere. You can still leave it on the loose side but not downsizing a full size.

But for your other concern, my ring is quite snug and still turns to the side pretty often. If this is a problem for you you might consider a European shank (it is kind of square shaped on the palm side of your hand) and prevents spinning.

Mr. Chickadee and I went ring shopping together, so when he popped the question it was a perfect fit :)

another option is to get 2 little silver balls that are attached to the inside bottom of your ring to make it more snug. the jeweler should be able to do it while you wait plus the balls can be easily taken off with heat. I think they are called “sizing beads” and this method is cheaper than resizing. Your jeweler may even do it for free.

The day after we got engaged, my ring, which was about 3/4 size too big, actually FELL OFF my hand. I couldn’t get it resized fast enough! In fact, I wish I’d made it even smaller–I was afraid my hands would swell in summer (we got engaged in winter) and didn’t want to make it too small. But having gone through a summer, I can say it’s still too big by 1/8 size. The stone is constantly spinning around. But at least it’s not in danger of falling off!

I’d get it resized: are you planning to make your wedding band the correct size? If so, they will look very strange together–I’ve made my wedding band the correct size; it’s only 1/8 size smaller than my engagement ring, and I can tell. A whole size would be hugely noticeable, and probably uncomfortable.

I wore a ring snuggie for over a year and it was the most annoying thing to get used to. Plus, the snuggie got dirty super fast and looked nasty! After the wedding, husband made me take my ring back to be resized and I’m so happy I did!

Miss Penguin — I have the answer for you (and it makes me realize I must do a blog post about this). It’s called “Fingermate” - http://www.fingermate.com. It is a hinge so you can get the ring over your knuckle while having the stone not spin when it’s on your hand. TOTALLY worth it! My stone is quite large for my hand (my ring finger is a 2 3/4) and it never spins. Check it out and I’ll do a detailed post about it soon.

Best,
Mrs. Onion

Fiance: Hon, what size ring do you want?
Me: Like a 5, maybe 5 and a half.
Fiance: [silent heart attack freak out moment]
Me: What’s wrong?
Fiance: You want a 5?
Me: Oh, Hon, that’s the size for the circumfrence around the finger, not the carat size.

True story.

yes. Funny thing is, over the years he asked me what my ring size was. I always told him size 6. He bought the ring in the size 6, and when it went on my finger, it was too big! My parents told me to temporarily wrap red string/thread around the band (for good luck) so it wouldn’t fall off. A month later I had my finger measured, and it was resized to a 5. The jeweler actually measured my finger to be a 4.5 but I insisted on it slightly larger for breathing room. So now, it’s small enough that it won’t fall off, but I have extra room for swelling and the future.

Nope, I had my finger sized when we started talking about getting engaged. Although, when I went for my wedding ring, the sales clerk said that my enagement ring was about a 1/2 size too big. I assurred him that it is in fact just right for when my fingers swell while I’m sleeping. I’m comfortable with my just slightly too big ring.

But, maybe this is an excuse for a lovely guard ring like my MIL has (worn next to engagement ring, closer to the tip of the finger than the palm)… one can’t have too many rings, right?

Yes because I am a freaking 4 and a half…. and rings don’t usually come in midget sizes like that.

You could also have the ring reshaped european style so it’s flat on the bottom side. Then even if it’s a little big, it’ll stay centered.

I resized mine twice. I originally sized in as a 5+, but it was too loose. I got it sized down to a 4.75, but after a while that was too loose as well. Finally, I got sizing beads put in (the smallest kind) and I couldn’t be happier.

They’re on the palm side of the ring, and technically push into the fleshy part of your finger, but after a while you can’t even feel them. They keep the ring from turning and aren’t as constricting as just getting a smaller band. And if you gain weight, they’re easier to remove than enlarging the band all over again.

My finger keeps shrinking…i got a 3.5 but it was too big. Turns out I’m 2 3/4 and I’ll def get it resized. Don’t want to lose it!

I got an engagement ring in a size 6-turns out my finger is a 3-1/2. I wore one of those snuggies things but it didn’t help much. I ended up parting with it for almost a week to get it sized. I was afraid it would be too small…but it fits just fine! It’s snug when it’s hot & humid and spins when it’s cold but it doesn’t go over the knuckle so that’s all I care about. I vote that you go get it sized.

This is seriously the biggest bonus about becoming a Bee- All the insanely helpful advice you get! All these options sound wonderful, im especially intrigued by the “sizing beads”.

Funny enough Ariel- It already is “european style!”

I’m convinced that I should get it resized. Some great advice here, and my best is to make sure you wear it through 4 seasons before you make a decision on what size to resize to…my fingers are larger in the summer than they are in the winter (as I suspect most peoples are)!

i have the same worry - when the sun’s out, and when he proposed (probably cos all the blood rushed through me!), the ring fits perfectly. when it’s cold, my fingers shrink and my ring gets loose. i am getting married in Asia, in 99% humidity, and am hesitant to get the ring resized, plus there are little pave diamonds almost all around the band. my jeweler recommended the beads over resizing — has anyone else used them?

My ring size is actually a 3.5, well it’s actually smaller, about a 3.25 which my first e-ring was sized to which fit perfectly. When I upgraded to my new setting the jeweler insisted that I get a 3.5 because I am getting two eterntiy bands, one for the top and one for the bottom of the e-ring, so that way all 3 will fit on my finger. He was also kind enough to think about what might happen when/if I get pregnant because you can not resize diamond eterntity bands. They are made specifically for your finger. So, I would say to also make sure of what kind of band you want and if it will affect how the ring will fit.

Right now w/o the bands I hate it because it’s still a bit loose even though it’s only a .25 difference. I highly recommend resizing it.
