Mr. Penguin overestimated the chubbiness of my fingers. So they’re a little on the plump side, but my sausages are still smaller than he anticipated. We recently popped in a jewelry store just to check out our wedding ring options, and I had them take my ring size…turns out I’m almost a whole size smaller than my engagement ring.
For some reason I’m really reluctant to resize my ring. What if I move to more humid climates? What if I gain weight? The ring is ridiculously big in dry climates, but fits a little better when there’s significant moisture in the air.
For now, I hate how the solitaire never sits up straight. Plus, now that the cold dry weather is rolling in, my fingers are shrinking even more…its getting to the point where I sometimes wear my ring on my middle finger or thumb, especially when I’m working.
I could wear a Ring Snuggies,

Are there stones in your band or is it a plain metal band? I would just resize it if there are no stones. Its not worth it to worry about it or have it huge and slip off somewhere. You can still leave it on the loose side but not downsizing a full size.
But for your other concern, my ring is quite snug and still turns to the side pretty often. If this is a problem for you you might consider a European shank (it is kind of square shaped on the palm side of your hand) and prevents spinning.
Mr. Chickadee and I went ring shopping together, so when he popped the question it was a perfect fit ![]()
another option is to get 2 little silver balls that are attached to the inside bottom of your ring to make it more snug. the jeweler should be able to do it while you wait plus the balls can be easily taken off with heat. I think they are called “sizing beads” and this method is cheaper than resizing. Your jeweler may even do it for free.
The day after we got engaged, my ring, which was about 3/4 size too big, actually FELL OFF my hand. I couldn’t get it resized fast enough! In fact, I wish I’d made it even smaller–I was afraid my hands would swell in summer (we got engaged in winter) and didn’t want to make it too small. But having gone through a summer, I can say it’s still too big by 1/8 size. The stone is constantly spinning around. But at least it’s not in danger of falling off!
I’d get it resized: are you planning to make your wedding band the correct size? If so, they will look very strange together–I’ve made my wedding band the correct size; it’s only 1/8 size smaller than my engagement ring, and I can tell. A whole size would be hugely noticeable, and probably uncomfortable.
I wore a ring snuggie for over a year and it was the most annoying thing to get used to. Plus, the snuggie got dirty super fast and looked nasty! After the wedding, husband made me take my ring back to be resized and I’m so happy I did!
Miss Penguin — I have the answer for you (and it makes me realize I must do a blog post about this). It’s called “Fingermate” - http://www.fingermate.com. It is a hinge so you can get the ring over your knuckle while having the stone not spin when it’s on your hand. TOTALLY worth it! My stone is quite large for my hand (my ring finger is a 2 3/4) and it never spins. Check it out and I’ll do a detailed post about it soon.
Best,
Mrs. Onion
Fiance: Hon, what size ring do you want?
Me: Like a 5, maybe 5 and a half.
Fiance: [silent heart attack freak out moment]
Me: What’s wrong?
Fiance: You want a 5?
Me: Oh, Hon, that’s the size for the circumfrence around the finger, not the carat size.
True story.
yes. Funny thing is, over the years he asked me what my ring size was. I always told him size 6. He bought the ring in the size 6, and when it went on my finger, it was too big! My parents told me to temporarily wrap red string/thread around the band (for good luck) so it wouldn’t fall off. A month later I had my finger measured, and it was resized to a 5. The jeweler actually measured my finger to be a 4.5 but I insisted on it slightly larger for breathing room. So now, it’s small enough that it won’t fall off, but I have extra room for swelling and the future.
Nope, I had my finger sized when we started talking about getting engaged. Although, when I went for my wedding ring, the sales clerk said that my enagement ring was about a 1/2 size too big. I assurred him that it is in fact just right for when my fingers swell while I’m sleeping. I’m comfortable with my just slightly too big ring.
But, maybe this is an excuse for a lovely guard ring like my MIL has (worn next to engagement ring, closer to the tip of the finger than the palm)… one can’t have too many rings, right?
Yes because I am a freaking 4 and a half…. and rings don’t usually come in midget sizes like that.
You could also have the ring reshaped european style so it’s flat on the bottom side. Then even if it’s a little big, it’ll stay centered.
I resized mine twice. I originally sized in as a 5+, but it was too loose. I got it sized down to a 4.75, but after a while that was too loose as well. Finally, I got sizing beads put in (the smallest kind) and I couldn’t be happier.
They’re on the palm side of the ring, and technically push into the fleshy part of your finger, but after a while you can’t even feel them. They keep the ring from turning and aren’t as constricting as just getting a smaller band. And if you gain weight, they’re easier to remove than enlarging the band all over again.
My finger keeps shrinking…i got a 3.5 but it was too big. Turns out I’m 2 3/4 and I’ll def get it resized. Don’t want to lose it!
I got an engagement ring in a size 6-turns out my finger is a 3-1/2. I wore one of those snuggies things but it didn’t help much. I ended up parting with it for almost a week to get it sized. I was afraid it would be too small…but it fits just fine! It’s snug when it’s hot & humid and spins when it’s cold but it doesn’t go over the knuckle so that’s all I care about. I vote that you go get it sized.
This is seriously the biggest bonus about becoming a Bee- All the insanely helpful advice you get! All these options sound wonderful, im especially intrigued by the “sizing beads”.
Funny enough Ariel- It already is “european style!”
I’m convinced that I should get it resized. Some great advice here, and my best is to make sure you wear it through 4 seasons before you make a decision on what size to resize to…my fingers are larger in the summer than they are in the winter (as I suspect most peoples are)!
i have the same worry - when the sun’s out, and when he proposed (probably cos all the blood rushed through me!), the ring fits perfectly. when it’s cold, my fingers shrink and my ring gets loose. i am getting married in Asia, in 99% humidity, and am hesitant to get the ring resized, plus there are little pave diamonds almost all around the band. my jeweler recommended the beads over resizing — has anyone else used them?
My ring size is actually a 3.5, well it’s actually smaller, about a 3.25 which my first e-ring was sized to which fit perfectly. When I upgraded to my new setting the jeweler insisted that I get a 3.5 because I am getting two eterntiy bands, one for the top and one for the bottom of the e-ring, so that way all 3 will fit on my finger. He was also kind enough to think about what might happen when/if I get pregnant because you can not resize diamond eterntity bands. They are made specifically for your finger. So, I would say to also make sure of what kind of band you want and if it will affect how the ring will fit.
Right now w/o the bands I hate it because it’s still a bit loose even though it’s only a .25 difference. I highly recommend resizing it.
I second Amy’s suggestion. My FI and I had my finger sized prior to him having my ring made and it arrived correctly, a size 4. But it was too big! I’m really a 3.75 so I got the “sizing beads”. They are fantastic! My ring is snug on my finger, doesn’t roll around (diamond always sits on top of my finger), they are invisible to anyone but me. And, they can be removed at a later date if your fingers swell (baby weight lets hope), etc.
My jeweler had my ring overnight
but next day the matching beads were in and my ring fit perfectly. Only $40.
FI got it right! of course he got me to inadvertedly tell him what my ring size was. luckily i have a plain band, so i can resize whenever. it does fit looser during certain times of the day, but it fits fine most of the time, which is what i’m concerned with.
if you’re worried about it falling off the day of your wedding, you can wear the ring snuggly thingy if it’s a temporary situation.
When we had my finger sized I was a 5.5. However, it was sized with a teeny ring sizing band and not with the width of the thick band the FH eventually chose.
You’d think it was too small - but no! The italian in me discovered this one day when gesturing my story to the FH and the ring flew off across the room!
We had it sized to a 5 the next day.
Yes- I kept it for about a month so people would have time to be able to see it, then sent it away to be resized. I recommend doing it and maybe leaving it a quater of a size bigger than you size for swelling or hot, humid days. You don’t want to risk losing it. Good Luck!
Just had my engagement ring and wedding band resized down 1/2 size each. Neither ring is an eternity band, so it was no problem. Rings were a great fit but I lost 40 pounds and now the e-ring was starting to slip wayyy too far up my finger.
Still a bit loose but the jewelers sizers felt so much tighter!! It was the jewler store where FI bought my e-ring and we bought our bands there. It was free and both rings were done in 40 minutes. They look brand new!
I had to go down a half size and it was SO painful to part with it (especially after just getting engaged!). But do it now and you won’t have to worry about it later!
Yes, and my jeweler resized it for free and offered to do it again if it was still sliding around. I am thinking about it, particularly with the cold weather coming in, because I can slide it off my finger a little too easily! I am considering the sizing beads to make it sit up straight. I agree that on that day, everyone is going to be looking at your hand.
Just chiming in with the value of leaving the ring slightly larger than your ring size. I once got a ring that was supposedly my proper ring size stuck on my finger and had to have it cut off which sucked (the ring cut off, not the finger - LOL).
My ring size is a 6.5 and engagement ring is actually a 7.25. I never got it resized, one because I’m attached so I understand not wanting to give it up for a couple of days and two because I know when I exercise my rings swell up and when I decide to get pregnant I figure my fingers will swell up again, and I’ve noticed a lot of pregnant and post pregnant people who have to wear their rings around their neck on on their pinky fingers. So I figure if it really gets bad I’ll get it sized, but after I’m dont having kids ![]()
Yes please do resize your wedding ring, mine was a whole size too big for my fingers and still after two resizings it moves around a little, it’s better to make sure it fits than heaven forbid something happen to it by slipping off!
After a whole year of wearing my ring a 1/2 too big I finally got it resized and wished I had done it sooner!!!
Also, think about the engagement/wedding ring combo. Having more than one ring or having a thicker band feels “tighter” than having just 1 ring or having a thinner band. An engagement ring that feels loose by itself might feel just right when worn with the wedding band.
I didn’t want to get my ring cut and resized so my jeweler (in Westwood!) put a ‘bridge’ in it. It’s a bar that goes across the back of the ring. It’s more comfortable than the beads if you’re resizing more than half a size (my ring went from a 5–>4).
I got my ring resized, but of course, the jewelers never listen to me about what size I am. So I always end up with a huge ring (even after resizing). They say that once your fingers swell, the ring will be too tight. Since my fingers don’t really swell, I never seem to have that problem, so my ring is always turning. But… it’s better than worrying that the ring will fly off!
I am actually planning on having it resized on Saturday. It is a bit loose and has been fine for the last 10 months but I just would feel better about it fitting snug.
Wow! What great advice you all have. I have a question though. Can you get the reings re-sized bigger (i.e. if you never lose the extra 5-10lbs after babies)?
Definitely do the sizing beads. My ring is a tad on the large size (and my fiance even ordered it a quarter size smaller than I told him!) but I didn’t want to have the ring resized, because I figured my fingers would only get fatter as I aged. Our jeweler suggested the sizing beads, and they are perfect! When I hyperextended my finger this summer and it swelled substantially, I was able to take the beads out and still wear the ring, and put them back in after the swelling subsided.
I had to have it resized from a 6 to a 3.5 and I have to agree, after just getting engaged, it was complete torture to part ways with it.
and then it was still too big, so the jeweler offered to put the two platnimum beads (sizing beads?) in and now it fits perfectly. It creates just enough tension to prevent it from spinning. Althought if you are clapping alot, like at a wedding, it does tend to dig into your finger by the end of the night.
ouch! that’s what i was worried about - whether they are comfy. i’m usually a 4, but this tends to spin a little, and when it’s cold, it’s loose! i’m thinking this won’t be good in the winter
but when i go back to Asia, i don’t want it to get tight and uncomfortable. hmmmmmm. maybe i’ll just do the wait-and-see. i can live with it for now!
Currently am waiting for my ring to come back from being sized down to a 6. I always told my FI that I needed a size 6, but one day we went ring browsing and the guy behind the counter said that I was more like a 6.5. So my FI bought my ring in a size 6.5, and one day at work I lost my ring. I eventually found it under my desk, but I knew that it was too big. I went back and I had a nice lady tell me that the right size is the size that you feel the most comfortable with.
BTW, I HATE those ring guard things. I wash my hands a lot and it was just so wrong feeling.. and it hurt a little too.
Here’s another happy vote for the sizing beads. I have an eternity band and my mother’s ring size permanently went up by about a full size after she had kids (even though she lost the weight) so I can just have the beads taken out when the time comes.
I had my ring resized once and it’s still too big. Even during the hottest days, my finger doesn’t swell much and the ring still slides around. Instead of resizing it again, I may just get stabilizers placed on the inside of the ring. They are tiny metal spheres that are unnoticeable when your put the ring on.
i used this snuggies for my ring-
you can get them at claire’s for 3.95 for a bunch of them .
my ring is designer and it was custom made to fit me (since it is custom they can not resize that particular style), but between the 8 months of locating a stone of the quality we wanted and the yr of engagement the ring was too big. Unfortunately for me the company is not stocking engagement ring bands for another yr or so in the U.S.
But the snuggies never hurt (wear it with the smooth side facing your skin and the open jagged side out) and i also wash my hands alot.
I got it resized and it fit so much better. I was so terrified of losing it when it was 1 1/2 sizes too big! I was scared what they might do to the ring while resizing it, but it came back perfect. And snugly fit to my finger.
So I recommend getting it resized. Definitely.
I totally second the hinge - my e ring is an eternity band and was 1 1/2 sizes too big! I would have had to take out diamonds (not an option) and reconstruct it otherwise. The hinge is perfect b/c it makes it fit snug - it never moves - and if my size goes up or down the ring will adjust itself. Perfect!
to be honest, my fi got an engagement ring for me that was a size and a half too big. i never wear jewelry and no one in my family knew what size i was, so he just guessed. haha! he’s really bad at guessing.
oh i almost forgot to answer…..yes, i definitely got it resized, but i was so sad to be apart from each other for a week.
i had mine resized from a 5 to a 4.5. i was kind of disappointed when it ended up being the wrong size because, you know, you never want to have to mess with something perfect right? my ring was a little tougher to resize too since it was a knife edge, so it didn’t come back as perfect as i would have liked, but since i’ve had it polished before the wedding it seems to have looked better.
i’ve heard you can put little “dots” on the inside of your ring to make the size smaller, and then remove them in the future when your finger size increases. i’m not sure where you can get that done (any jeweler i’m guessing), but something you can look into!
I have the sizing beads inside my e-ring and love them! It used to wiggle dangerously, and would sort of flop to one side or another. When my hands got cold it could slip off my finger! Our local NYC jeweler put in the little white gold balls for only $20. My ring now fits perfectly, and even if my finger puffs up because of heat or a lot of salty food, it isn’t too tight. The little balls make it impossible for the ring to slip past my knuckle, and after the wedding I have the option of moving the ring to my (slightly larger) right hand ring finger.
Good luck, you have lots of options!
Rebecca
my friend says the little metal ball sizing bead things are awesome. she has tiny fingers and her ring was a bit too big.
my ring used to be a little too big. it would spin around all the time. until…i…uh….gained the newlywed 15. WAH!!! =( and now it’s snug. oh how i long for the days when it was too big. =(
my ring is an heirloom & it just happened to fit perfectly… most of the time. like everyone else has said, cold or hot days can cause mini-annoyances… one night this summer it got stuck & a few times in my freezing office it would spin so much i wanted to take it off! after reading all the other comments tho, i feel lucky that it fits right the majority of the time!!! so yes, i would resize it just to save yourself the headache.
My fiance totally surprised me with his proposal. He had a whole team of people helping him.
He told the two girls I worked with and gave them the mission of finding out my ring size. I was totally clueless the day we were all trying on each other’s rings. One of the girl’s rings almost fit, but it was a little small.
He got a ring half a size bigger than her ring size, and it fit perfectly. No resizing necessary.
When my fiance purchased my ring, he didn’t bother to have it sized because he wasn’t sure of the size of my finger. As it turned out, the ring was a size 8, and I had to have it resized to a size 4.5!! Even if he had asked me, I probably wouldn’t have realized that my finger was that small!
I would have the ring resized. It’ll look so much better than those ring snuggies, and it makes it feel more like the ring belongs to you. You wouldn’t attend your ceremony without sizing your dress, would you? Since I had to have mine sized so small, I was terrified that it would get stuck! But I found that all through the summer it fit fine, and in the winter it still gets a bit loose. If I gain weight, I’d rather have to get it sized again in a few years than risk losing it.
Well, you’ll be wearing until June, so I say resize it. It’s a new ring right? Be happy with it for those wonderful months you get to wear it.
As for me, his grandmother’s ring was the exact same 5 3/4 as I wear, so there was no resizing needed. It was antique though, so I don’t know that I could have gone through with it even it had needed it.

About Me: I'm a silly mess of a girl who, above all else in this world, LOVES the Spice Girls. I eat sushi at least 3 times a week, and feel guilty about how much it costs the other 4 days a week. I love designer jeans and cheap accessories. I don't like sweets, but I love the UCLA Bruins!

No I was lucky he had been listening to my random talk over the years and he know my ring size.
Get it resized because on your actual wedding day everyone will be looking at that hand!
