Playing Dress Up

September 25th, 2007 @ 3:30 pm by Mrs. Chickadee

So I have to admit, I love playing dress up. Always have, probably always will. And getting a wedding dress is pretty much like playing dress up for grown-ups. Needless to say, trying on wedding dresses has pretty much been my very favorite thing in wedding planning so far.

The very first time I went dress shopping was a mere 2 days after getting engaged. I was finally “allowed” to go do it and I couldn’t wait. However, that day was more of a fun time with my girls than anything else. There was only one dress that I liked that day: Maggie Sottero’s Grace, but it definitely didn’t give me the “this is it” feeling.

Fast forward a couple of months. I had graduated from college and gotten settled in my new apartment when my FMIL suggested we go dress shopping. So we drove down to Michelle’s Bridal Shoppe in Urbana because we’d heard it was the best in downstate Illinois and it’s just an hour down the road from my in-laws’ house.

Going into dress shopping I wanted pick-ups. Maybe not the crazy huge cupcake look of some dresses, but subtle pick-ups like on my bridesmaid’s dress for my sister’s wedding. Our assistant Melissa, picked up a new Alfred Angelo bridal gown in the same style. I was so excited, but proceeded to pick up a good 20 other dresses to check out just in case. They’re all so pretty, I couldn’t resist! At first Melissa seemed appalled I would want to try on that many, but I figured if I was going to pay a thousand dollars for a dress, I was going to at least try on every other one in the county.

I tried on the Alfred Angelo dress and decided right away it was just not the one for me. I’m awfully petite, and the dress just seemed to swallow me whole. Disappointed, I kept plugging away through the rest of the dresses. Despite my desire to have something drastically different from my sister’s dress (she’s getting married this October, I’m getting married next June) most of the dresses were simple ball gowns or a-lines. That’s not to say they weren’t gorgeous; they even looked pretty good on me, but none of them gave me that certain feeling.

These are the three that I ended up liking the best:

Playing Dress Up : wedding peoria Dress1a1 dress1a
Playing Dress Up : wedding peoria Dress2b1 dress2b
Playing Dress Up : wedding peoria Dress3a1 dress3a

In the end I liked the third one the best with it’s gorgeous train and even convinced myself that it could be the dress I get married in, but I just couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing.

But here’s where things get interesting:

The one dress I tried on that differed from the a-line ball gown type dress, was a mermaid shaped Maggie Sottero gown. I didn’t actually like the dress itself (something about the beading just seemed strange to me) but I kept coming back to the picture of myself in the dress. Finally my little sister pointed out that though the dress was just so-so, the shape of it looked fantastic on me! It was at that point that I decided I needed to switch gears and stop looking at dresses with pick-ups and focus more on the mermaid shape. It would give that little bit of something unique without a skirt so big that it overwhelmed me.

The dress that started it all:

I did have a great time at Michelle’s and I’d recommend it to anyone, but there just wasn’t anything there for me.

Definitely love the shape of the last dress the most!! However, I think I would term that as a “trumpet” shape since it flares out from your thigh area. Mermaids flare out at the knee (at least this is what my seamstress told me). Whatever, you look smoking! ;)

I had a very similar experience! I had a picture of an A-line gown in my head, but once I tried on a mermaid dress, I realized that was what I loved and looked best on me. The first mermaid dress wasn’t *the one*, but about a month later I found it!

I guess it just goes to show that you should always have a very open mind when trying on wedding dresses!

You are a doll! You look so pretty in all the dresses, but the last one is so lovely– it really is the perfect shape for you.

I, like you, and very petite and had visions of A-line gowns in my head prior to trying any on. Once I had them on, I felt very overwhelmed and like the dress was wearing me rather than me wearing the dress. Long story short, I tried on a mermaid/trumpet gown and loved the shape and how it looked on me, and ended up with that style!

i bought my dress from michelle’s! i definitely second your recommendation (i was even a bit bummed that sil bought her dress at david’s bridal without even *visiting* michelle’s bridal!), but it’s a bummer you couldn’t find your dream dress there. happy shopping!

I fell in love with the trumpet/mermaid style also. Check out Maggie Sottero Vienna–it’s gorgeous! The lady at the bridal store said it could be altered to be even more hip-hugging, so keep that in mind too!

I love the look of mermaid dresses and I totally wish I had the body for it! I have an inverted triangle figure - large upper body and practically no hips so there is very little definition between my waist and hips. So all the mermaid dresses I tried on looked horrible!

You look GORGEOUS - I can’t wait to see what you ended up choosing!

Yes Yes Yes! the first 3 are nice- but they don’t give you that “WOWZA”, but that last one- Your figure looks DYNO-MYTE!

the 2nd dress you had on, I almost got that dress, actually still thinking about it. I just love the trimming on the dress. I also tried on mermaid dresses and loved them, but for some reason i still feel a little scared of wearing it.

I concur - the mermaid style definitely flatters your figure! How fun - that means more dress up for you!! ;)

I was thinking throughout the whole post that you would look lovely in a mermaid/trumpet style gown. I’m so glad you tried one on! (For what it’s worth, that dress is a knock-out on you. Weird beading and all…you look absolutely lovely in it. What a pretty dress!)

Good luck finding “the one!” I love these posts with all the dress pics in them, so keep ‘em coming, please. :)

I still like the third one best. But I think if you can find a mermaid one with a better design (more simple), it would look great on you! Good luck!

The mermaid one looks great on you! I have to ask, do you know the style/price of the third one???

You’ve got the shape girl…go for it!

Oh, and I used to take my sister to a dress store in the mall and we’d play dress-up. We’d try on as many dresses as we wanted to without a commitement to buy….it was always great fun. A perk is that when it came time to pick out the real deals, I knew exactly what would work on me.

Disclaimer: for those here that have worked in dress shops, let it be known that we always tidied up after ourselves and re-racked all of the clothes. :)
