Snow Pea Goes Back To School

September 25th, 2007 @ 5:32 pm by Mrs. Snow Pea

It’s finally over. No more playing around with my wedding scrapbooks. Put away the craft punches and card stock. Take out the pencils and graph paper. It’s back to school for me! It’s the first day of classes and I am really looking forward to it. It’s a funny feeling returning to class as a married person. It’s like so much happened this summer with the wedding and now the slate has been wiped clean. My classmates have come up to me and asked, Hey, didn’t you get married this summer? I hesitate for a moment and reply, Oh yeah, I did, didn’t I? winky01 I have yet to use the word “husband” yet. It still sounds funny to me.

The good news is I can concentrate on my senior design project this year with no wedding distractions. The bad news is that my classmates range from 20-23 years old, so they refer to me as the “older married girl”. shocked01

How many of you “older married girls” are still in school? Feel any different?

Miss Snow Pea, I started graduate school 10 days before my wedding! It was interesting to be known as “the girl who got married” during the first weeks of meet and greet…

I just started grad school, and I am having the opposite experience. I looked around the room and realized that half of my classmates are married. I keep forgetting that everyone is older and it makes sense that such a large proportion of us are in that boat. I am still just engaged, but it won’t be such a big deal when I come back next fall with a wedding band.

I’m still in school too Mrs. Snowpea. I’m still finishing by bachelor’s though, so most of my classmates are REALLY young too.

Its definitely kind of weird to be older and married in room full of kids that still can’t even drink legally.

It’s also weird because Mr. Radish actually teaches at the same school. I always feel strange about that.

I’m still in school (not quite married yet), but even as a 3rd year Ph.D. student, I’m one of the youngest in the program at 24. I’m younger than all of the incoming first year students who started in July. I guess I’ll be the “young married girl” instead. :-\

I went back to school after a 12-year break, two months after the wedding (ie, last month). I’m definitely older than two-thirds of my classmates, so I’m very glad that other third is around!

I’d read plenty of times (mostly on knot boards) about the huge feeling of “what now??” that settled on new brides. We spend a year or more dedicating every free moment to DIY and daydreams, and suddenly it’s over. There are no placecards to make, no guests lists to fight about, and no vendors to check in on.

And what better to fill that void than grad school?

Also, it’s a good retort to the baby question. But that’s not my real motivation! No, really!

Interesting, for us it was the opposite. We even postponed the wedding until after we were each done with grad school. It was very important to us to feel that we’d completed our educational goals independently and brought those degrees with us into the marriage. For us, no regrets.

I just started grad school this fall. Next fall I will be a married student. I look around and many people are still single. I wonder if it’ll be any different…

I’m usually okay with the night classes, but when I had to do morning classes…holy cow. It was like being in high school again. Do I honestly have to raise my hand?

The absence of wedding planning is a relief I know, but it’s also kind of weird. You do it for so long that you get used to it.

I remember working so hard to get to that day and then getting back to my everyday life was harder than I anticipated. I think I got a little drunk off of feeling important. Now I was just like every other girl who was married.

Then I snapped out of it and realized that I was still wonderful me and that my guy and I can celebrate just as heartily every day. There’s a lot of life to live….let’s get to it!
