Two Songs To Choose From

September 26th, 2007 @ 3:33 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Oh my fur and whiskers! Mr. Kiwi and I have decided on something musically for the wedding! Well, kind of. shy We have two songs chosen for our “final dance” song.

One of our songs is “Into the Mystic”- the version by Van Morrison. I’ve always loved this song, it’s great to slow dance to, and just so romantic. It’s been featured in many movies, one of which was “9 Months” in one of the sweetest moments. I’d love to dance to this song, with the words, “As we sail into the mystic”, the last words we hear as we depart.

Lyrics below:

We were born before the wind
Also younger than the sun
Ere the bonnie boat was won as we sailed into the mystic
Hark, now hear the sailors cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic
And when that fog horn blows I will be coming home
And when the fog horn blows I want to hear it
I don’t have to fear it

And I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And magnificently we will flow into the mystic

When that fog horn blows you know I will be coming home
And when that fog horn whistle blows I got to hear it
I don’t have to fear it

And I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And together we will flow into the mystic
Come on girl…

Too late to stop now…

Our other song is that 1980s classic, “(I’ve Had) The Time of my Life”, the Dirty Dancing song by Jennifer Warnes and Bill Medley. This song is a favorite for many. It was the first song I slow danced to, with this guy at a Bar Mitzvah in 7th grade. happy02 Has no relevance to Mr. Kiwi, but it’s still a great song! Mr. Kiwi loves this song, because of all the different kinds of people who choreograph dance moves to this song. While unlikely we’d do anything like that, I love how it starts off slow, and ends on a fast note.

Lyrics (like you don’t know)

Now I’ve had the time of my life
No I never felt like this before
Yes I swear it’s the truth
and I owe it all to you
’Cause I’ve had the time of my life
and I owe it all to you

I’ve been waiting for so long
Now I’ve finally found someone
To stand by me
We saw the writing on the wall
As we felt this magical
Fantasy

Now with passion in our eyes
There’s no way we could disguise it
Secretly
So we take each other’s hand
’Cause we seem to understand
The urgency just remember

You’re the one thing
I can’t get enough of
So I’ll tell you something
This could be love because

I’ve had the time of my life
No I never felt like this before
Yes I swear it’s the truth
And I owe it all to you

With my body and soul
I want you more than you’ll ever know
So we’ll just let it go
Don’t be afraid to lose control
Yes I know what’s on your mind
When you say, “Stay with me tonight”
Just remember

You’re the one thing
I can’t get enough of
So I’ll tell you something
This could be love because

I’ve had the time of my life
No I never felt like this before
Yes I swear it’s the truth
And I owe it all to you.

We’re stuck on these two, which do you prefer?

Absolutely Into The Mystic.

I know I’ve Had The Time Of My Life has personal meaning for you, but other people might see it as a bit of a joke, considering it’s from such a cult favorite type of movie. I even got a forward once of a wedding video where the couple decided to do the dance that Baby and Johnny did, down to the last move, and the email forward was sent to say, look how lame these people are!

Of course, you shouldn’t care what other people think of your song choice, but since you have this other, lovely song, I think you should reject the Dirty Dancing one.

I could be way off base here, but I thought Into The Mystic was about death?

I’m not sure I’ve heard the first song (music lovers cringe), or if I had, I don’t recongnize it.

But the second song appeals to the cheesy movie lover in me who can’t help get pumped when Patrick Swayze says “nobody puts baby in a corner”.

It’s also a great cue since everybody knows that song.

I will say something for having a good slow song as the last dance. After everyone’s been dancing it up, it’s nice to end on a slow note. For some reason after all the high-energy music, it makes the last song seem even sweeter.

What’s the length of each song?

I love Into the Mystic, but Ashley might be right.

I like I’ve had the time of my life. I like it because it is a good song to end the evening on.

I do love Into the mystic. LOTS. It’s so romantic, and Van Morrison’s voice… totally.

But, also as you know, no one puts baby in a corner. So it’s hard to say anything bad about “I’ve had the time of my life.” It was also my prom song :)

I guess I’m not so helpful, but they’re both great choices! What good taste you Kiwis have!

Just last night, FI and I were talking about “I’ve had the time of my life” and how it’s a great LAST dance song. So, maybe you can have both and use “Into the Mystic” for the first dance. GL!

Into the Mystic for sure! Van is amazing (Moondance is my favorite!) and I think it’s a very romantic soul. “I want to rock your gypsy soul” Awesome.

Another vote for cheezy 80s and Patrick Swayze!

Another vote for Into the Mystic! So romantic. I’ve never thought of it as a death song…and my best friend is using it as her first dance song when she gets married in two weeks!

love, love, love Into the Mystic!!! Very soulful and meaningful. Not sure about the deeper meaning of the song, but it’s still beautiful!

I love “Into the Mystic” so much. Not sure about the death part… but you wouldn’t be the first to use it as a first dance song. It was Jim and Michelle’s first dance song in American Wedding!

HACB says:

Oops - just realized you’re looking for a final dance song, not first dance song.

Oh well, still a great song at either time!

Into the Mystic is most certainly about death, but if you love it, who cares.

Personally, I prefer “She’s Like the Wind”. So CRAZEEE FOR SWAYZEEE

Mm, I don’t have a vote, tho’ I do loves me some “Dirty Dancing”…but, was it my imagination, or wasn’t there a post up earlier about Miss Kiwi’s undies that has now disappeared? I loaded WB, stepped away for coffee, read the post and tried to comment, but it wouldn’t work…and now it seems to have vanished! Miss K, FWIW, I thought they were cute, and think you should spangle the butt w/ a sparkly heart. That’s what my MOH did for hers. =)

I love Dirty Dancing so definitely a vote for I’ve Had the time of My Life!

I love them both- but for the “last dance” I would go with “I Had the Time of My Life”. Afterall, it was good enough for Jonny and Baby to end on :-)

I used “Time of my Life” for my last dance and it was amazing!!! My best friend copied me and her DJ had everyone circle the bride and groom on the dance floor. Everyone blew bubbles and halfway through bride and groom separated and grabbed people from the circle to dance with. It turned into the best moment of the night. Everyone was grabbing random people and dancing while bubbles were blowing– it was so much fun. My husband thought is was cheezy at first when I selected that song, but now we don’t even think about Dirty Dancing when we hear that song. He has since said that it was the BEST song I selected for our wedding.
