Informal “Formals”

September 27th, 2007 @ 8:31 am by Mrs. Onion

One of the things that led me to our photographer, Daria Bishop, was her photojournalistic style. Now I know that is a phrase that is so over used these days (much like bridezilla) it’s all but lost its meaning. But Daria is really a photojournalist — she free lances for the Burlington Free Press. We didn’t fill out any “must take” photos list, we didn’t have to sit for endless posed portraits, it was great. In fact, we were running late before the ceremony and took all the family/wedding party photos in 10 minutes then it was off to the church!

That being said, I only have a few photos from Daria so I’m going to also share some more photos taken by our family and friends.

Hooray for a tea length wedding dress! I want to get one too, but I’ve been finding the hunt a little tricky. Any shopping suggestions?

jillibean — my dress is a romona keveza from her legends collection. it’s actually a top and a skirt. i bought it at mark ingram’s bridal atelier (www.bridalatelier.com) in nyc. i’d highly recommend anju, my sales girl. i felt more comfortable and more well taken care of at mark ingram’s than any of the many salons i went to while searching for my dress!

that being said, i didn’t set out to buy a short gown, i just tripped on it really. so if you know you want something short, i’d highly recommend looking at white party/cocktail dresses. you might be surprised. and even if you spend more on it than you would a regular “party dress,” it will still be MUCH less than a wedding dress. white seems to be in fashion recently anyway, so you might luck out! keep me posted on your search — i’d love to see how you do!

Those still look like relatively traditional formal posed portraits to me (although they’re awesome and not stuffy!). It’s terrific that she was so quick about it and everyone looks comfortable - but I’m wondering, where is the line drawn between the “posed portraits” and the above? Just that they’re not “endless”?

I know it’s random - but aside from “ditto to the comments above” I’d like to say that your mom is gorgeous! Now we know where ya got your good looks! Hehe.

Sort of along Kate’s random aside, I have to say I love Mr. Onion’s grandma’s outfit. She’s so stylish!

And your photos are beautiful… :-)

You both look great!

Just a small picky thing…wedding photojournalism is a made up title. There is no such thing as working a wedding as a journalist event. She might do documentary photography at wedding but calling it journalism implies that photographers operate under a strict code of ethics which includes never interfereing in the event or telling or asking anyone to do anything differently which all wedding photographers do. And on top of that, photojournalists never alter a photo after it is taken which all wedding photogs do.

Sorry for the rant - I just think the term is so misused. But wedding photojournalist or not, Daria’s photos are gorgeous!

What a stylish group you are! Love all the ladies’ outfits but especially Mr. Onion’s grandmother. She’s an inspiration. May we all stay so lovely and chic as we move along in life…
